I remember that article. That's what set me on the path to thinking a 1 might be my best bet.
Especially after I did the math on my 120 mile round trip commute after I move ... not the kind of mileage I want to pay for an M car with or risk looking at a turbo rebuild after only 4 years.

I didn't know the engine had that many problems. Are they fixed in the new single turbo motor? I am fan of the straight 6 BMW motors, they do it well.
The 328i is a summer toy, had it since new and not replacing it with the 1. My summer dd is a 07 g35. I like the power but to many rattles and noise.

I drove the 128 and liked it. I checked out some of the other brands and was having a hard time making up my mind. Then I test drove the 135. Five minutes into the test drive I knew what to do. 14K miles on it now and it still brings a smile to my face when I punch it.
I came from a supercharged/intercooled E36 M3.. I chose the 135i because I felt the new 3 series has become, sizewise, more like a 5 series such as it was at the time I bought the M3. The 135i is a a little heavier and a little wider, but its also a hair shorter, so sizewise, it is similar to the E36... more similar than any new 3 series.. however, how can you claim the power is on par? The E36 M3 had 240 hp and 236 ft lbs.. The 135i is conservatively rated at 60 more hp and 64 more ft lbs trq. Thats really not very similar, and I will add that having driven both, the 135i blows the doors off a stock E36 M3 in acceleration capabilities. Car mag tests show the E36 M3 0-60 somewhere averaging around 5.6 sec; the 135i usually comes up with a number like 4.7 sec. So powerwise, its really not a good comparo at all with the stock e36 M3.

Can someone summarize the reliability reputation issues of the 135i ?

Ive only got about 18k miles on mine, but its been clear sailing, ie, not a single thing has needed repair or unusual service. Some of the N54s had issues with the High Pressure fuel pump as you probably know, but my N55 has been really solid.. I was getting itchy to replace it earlier this year as Ive had it now since Nov. 2010. However with so little miles I wanted to hang on, and getting a deal on the M Performance Power kit from my dealer was just the ticket... That really did add the needed increase in the power which was enough to stave off my intention of replacing it with an m240i... Of course, if youre planning a more encompassing tune, more power to you.. But the car is solid.

after recalls years ago I've not had any problems, but I only have a little over 60k on my 2008 now

I've had my '11 128 for over 1 year now (manual, sport package). The previous BMW before that was a 330ci with (manual, sport package). Honestly, while I have been "spanked" by a couple of S4's, the 128 can hold its own, and completely stock and crappy tires, kept up with much "faster" cars at my most recent DE. I purchased the car for $16K with 45k miles, and CPO for 1 year. When I looked for a comparable 135, I could not even touch it without spending an additional $5K. (Un)fortunately, BMW had done tons of work under the CPO and SULEV warranties, so I guess I technically have a fairly new car now for a very low cost. Personally, I never regret not getting the 135 as I feel the car is plenty powerful and fun to drive. I like seeing the extra money in my savings account, and trust me, I am an auto enthusiast.

Every other manufacturer should give up on building their own cars and just make M3s instead.
You will 100% regret it. Especially coming from a G35. I bought a 128i in December 2015 for a great deal. November 2016 I traded it in and got a 335i (I couldn't find any good 135i's for the great price I got the 335 for). The 128i was a blast to drive but everyday I found myself wishing I had more power. Do yourself a favor and get a 135i.
as for the reliability, the N51/n52 in the 128i is far more reliable

I believe that 3L in the 135 is an inline 6 as well.
question is whether the turbo has longevity, or, like a great artist, dies too soon!

I was at first thinking I may keep my current car and buy a Z3 as an extra car for fun. But I think I will look toward getting a 1 series now. Personally, I'd rather have the 128 due to the high pressure fuel pump issues in the 135 and the probability of higher maintenance/upkeep costs.
I want the simple inline 6 engine that BMW is known for. I personally prefer naturally aspirated over turbo. The better acceleration of the 135 would be nice, but not that important to me.
