I thinking of replacing my g35 with a 1. I found a great deal on a 128 that has a manual gearbox and everything I want. I think I really want the 135 for the power but the 128 deal seems to tough to pass up. So will I regret getting the 128? Do those who have a 128i feel shorted????

well when i was looking at 1's the looks of the 135 caught my eye as well as the power difference. i love the front end of the 135. when i was comparing the 128 and the 135 with the salesman at Rahal, he said that the 135 was a better choice for my personal wants for my car. so it all depends on if you want the extra power. but if money is tight do whats best for you.
I came from a 325 Cic to this 128i vert, so this is a step up for me in terms of power. This 3-liter does everything I want it to do. Now, I'm not a power guy; I have more fun driving the twisties than just blasting out of the blocks. If you want head-snapping off the line power, this may not be for you. But I've always been a little concerned about the additional maintenance issues with a turbo, so I've avoided them. Still, I'm very satisfied with this car.
Thanks for the input. I like a quick car that handles, that is why I am coming back to BMW. I have a e36 328ic that I love to drive and the new 1 seems like good dd for me. I think I am going to wait till I find the right 135.
heh, every salesman will try to move the car that's more expensive as first.
Me personally, I went with the straight six with no regrets. Car has plenty of power and doesn't have 135 rep what's affecting its residual value not even mentioning major difference in cost of insurance.
I did drive 135 and loved it but after 2 years on 1addictis I can't get over all the imperfections the car has,
think realistically straight 6 is what bmw's known for and what it does the best for decades, TT engine is still fairly fresh and it does show it.

well i havent had any problems with my 2011 135 yet. so i guess im one of the lucky ones.
3 years of yearning for a '35 in my old 328..... I went 1 and went '35! Worth it!
If you're coming from a 328 e36 vert the 128 will blow the doors off it and feel a hell of a lot quicker.

the 128's weight and power is on par w/the e36 m3 and that car was WAY fun to drive.
i am considering a toy this summer, and really want to get into an 09 135, but the realist in me doesn't want all teh headaches of a n54 motor.
Almost identical power:weight ratio compared to the E36 M3 and E46 330i ZHP. Both of the latter cars would be superior to the 128i IMO.
I've driven a few 135is, and they're definitely fun cars to drive - really nice feeling clutch and transmission on that car. I was really close to buying one - probably would've if they looked a little better. I've since decided to go with an E46 M3. I like the M3 more, but I would've been happy with the 135 too. If I could get the 135i clutch and shift linkage in my car, I'd have my ideal car.

I have no regrets with choosing a 128i. It goes just a fast as the 135i, but is not as quick. No fuel pump/waste gate/software problems either.
I don't know... even though they're similar on paper, the E46 ZHP and E36 M3 were both designed to be "high-end" cars while the 128i is the most entry level BMW you can get today. BMW will have made compromises with the 128i that they didn't on the other two cars. If you have to have a new car, the 128 is great - but a well taken care of example of the older cars would be tough competition IMO. A well equipped E46 can almost compete on a technological level too - main feature that wasn't available on the E46 is comfort access (and I've yet to see a 1 equipped with that anyway). Admittedly E36 M3 is a big step back in terms of technology (no HIDs, no bluetooth, no MP3 playback, etc...).

I don't think you'd regret either. For me, performance is a must though. So I went with the M-Sport Package 135i/6 with no other frills at all. If it had been out at the time I got my car, I probably would have gone for the 1M.
I like the look too. The aggressive styling appeals. Particularly, the bigger rims, low-profile tires, on a bright red car with shadowline trim just look unutterably sexy in my opinion. The anthracite headliner with black or red leather looks hot too.

Never drove the 128i, but my 135i Convertible is a hell of a lot of fun...

it's on par on power with an e36 m3 alright.
e36 m3's are very slow.

Any thoughts on a 135 vs. a 335 (or even a 328)? I'm looking at a convertible and while I like the 3-series hardtop convertible, I'm not sure that I really want to spend that much. I can get a newer 135 (2008/2009) for pricing comparable to an older 328 (2007-2008). Am I losing THAT much by going with the 1-series?
I traded my 2008 328i for a 2011 135i. Best decision EVER....( said in comic book guy font)
I compared the size specifications of my '06 E46 vert and the 128i. Overall, the 128 (and the 135) is about 5 inches shorter than the E46, 2 or 3 inches shorter on the wheelbase. Oddly, the 128i is wider than the E46. Go figure.
More interesting, the 128i has more legroom in it than my E46 had. Now, the E46 did not have the sport package that my 128 has, but I'm not sure that would make the difference in legroom. Where you'll notice the difference is in the footwell for the back seat. It's almost non-existent in the 128.
Not sure how the '07 and newer 3 series' specs compare sizewise to the 1 series, but I do know the convertibles are all hard tops after '06, which is why I went with the 1 series -- I wanted a trunk for my golf clubs when the top is down.
Never drove a 128i before, but I love my 135i. The car has a lot of low end torque.
I love my 135i, but what's under the hood scares the crap out of me
it's an expensive and complicated engine, with some expensive well known teething issues

No one's mentioned Miller's excellent article in Roundel on the 128i (last fall I think), he does a really nice job looking at the strengths and weaknesses compared with the 135. After reading that and with the reliability issues surfacing with the 135, I've got my eye on a 128 for sure. Granted it's not gonna pull like the 135 off the line or in the left lane, but the likelihood of a better overall ownership experience seems high...
