Please help with 1981 E23 745i euro vacuum line photos!!!

Hello, i just recently picked up a 1981 e23 745i euro. Will be posting picts soon. I just want to check & or replace the vac lines, but i want to make sure routing and proper placement. I see one open nipple with a small hole in center on the top of the intake tube about dead center. I want to be sure that bubbas garage 10 years ago did not rig something or put in the wrong place. There is a computer generated diagram posted, i cannot tell. Any picts under the hood would be appreciated.. Thanks, again dave

Download those first off and run a compression test. Your 3.2 is a very low 7:1 static compression, I would expect compression numbers in the 125-140psi area on all cylinders. The car is very slow on take off then comes on like a hurricane to 10psi. The only real way to cure this is with a bigger motor (think the turbo Motronic block as it has 8:1 compression and more bore) or go to a B35 which has 9:1. Both are more than fine at 10psi and more. This is something to do later... also this car is setup perfectly factory for a five speed manual conversion. Do it. The three speed auto sucks. If the motor is bad, there is no point in continuing putting money into it.

You need to buy some tools to tune this car:

Yes, you need an old school light with advance/retard function. ACTRON has a great digital one you can get for $50 or so used if you shop around... it also has a digital tach.

You also need to buy a vacuum/boost gauge. 30"/20psi is fine.

A wideband O2 sensor setup to verify A/F is proper at idle, part throttle, and wide open. AEM units are great. Last thing you want is a melt down. The Ljet is pretty much out of fuel at stock boost levels. We can worry about squeezing more out of it later, much later.

Next, replace the cap, rotor, spark plugs (NGK BP5ES), lash valves to 0.012", NEW valve cover gasket, and replace any other rubber up top (such as the two U shaped that run from the idle motor to the alu intake tube. The two files above will tell you the ign timing.

When you lash your valves remove the oil spray bar. Pinch the center of it for more frontal oil flow. Also replace both of the bolts and crush washers with new so they do not back out.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...79&hg=11&fg=35 ORDER parts 3, 7, and 9, two of each to have a spare.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...22&hg=11&fg=15 ORDER the proper parts for your VIN.

The tit on that pipe to the throttle body runs to the firewall and the overboost switch. The bypass valve runs to the intake manifold on the under side. The distributor is this BUT are reversed (yes diagram is wrong): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...21&hg=11&fg=45

One vac line from the intake manifold runs to the HVAC system, disregard the red vac line that runs to my boost gauge. My vac pump is unplugged currently as I have vac leaks in the HVAC, I would just unplug yours too for now and probably just plug the intake manifold tit for the HVAC. Why? Just to get the motor running right on first. Check the two pics below:

Make sure both fuel pumps are working. If not, just replace the single intank with a single 255lph one from http://treperformance.com/i-656-bmw-...nd-models.html

http://cruzinperformance.com/ Mail your fuel injectors there to have them cleaned. Believe me, they do not flow well currently. Replace the mile of fuel line with high pressure FUEL INJECTION rated hose that is 5/16". Goodyear makes it.

Make sure the exhaust is not cobbled up so the car can breathe. Factory was dual 2" pipes without a cat. Most people run dual 2.25" or just a single 3". Up to you if yours is messed up and chances are it is... one of my cars had a SINGLE 2" exhaust with a cat and could barely breathe.

That should get you started. Gotta use 91+ fuel and remove the intercooler at some point, flush it out with mineral spirits to be rid of the oil residue to help the car spool up faster.

O2 sensor there, but wire is cut????

There is a o2 sensor there just after the downpipe. But it has 1 single wire 2 inches long ( looks like it was cut at some point. I cannot find the rest of the wire, or where it went to. And do not know where it should connect. Any help would be great, thanks

It is not used. The 745i ran open loop always in stock form, this is the big reason to buy a wideband O2 kit (to make sure the A/F ratios are proper). Pull the speaker panel to verify there is no 'Johnson Box' installed as that just leans you out. Remove it and restore the wiring properly if the JB was ever there.

Well I replied this to you already:

    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...21&hg=11&fg=45

Just REVERSE those fittings and you are good to go. Yes, again, the diagram is incorrect. Single tit throttle body on the '83 goes to the outer tit on the single tit distributor.

WHAT Am i looking for when i remove the pass speaker panel. I AM NOT SURE WHAT A Johnson box looks like. Thanks

Thanks hitman and others ,for all the info so far. Now there are 4 nipples on the bottom of the intake under the 3.5 script. Do you know what is supposed to go off each. 3 have hoses, and one is plugged on mine currently. Thanks for the help

Johnson Box is the size of a pack of smokes. It is beside the computer in the passenger kick panel, lets hope you do not have one. Chances are pretty low.

    Bottom four:

Fuel Pressure Regulator (black or brass thing on fuel rail
HVAC system with check valve (just plug for now)
Bypass valve on intake piping to throttle body
To valve cover breather boot (http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...22&hg=11&fg=15)

Sounds like the fuel tank vapor hoses:
