is the 528e automatic transmission the same from 1981-1988??

just curious if the 528e automatic transmission is the same from 1981-1988?...if not what years are compatible?

You mean from 82 -88. No, I believe the earlier ones were 3hp22. The later ones were 4hp22. now the 528e never had the 4hp22 EZ. The 528e never had the different settings on the tranny. All the 528e had the shift linkage and not the computer to do the shifting. which the 535i had after 86.

South42 is right, 528e's were only available 1982-1988, and they didn't come with the "-EH" trans. I don't happen what year the auto transmissions changed from 3-speed to 4-speed ('84 or '85 maybe?). You should be able to pick up a transmission from a similar year 528e pretty easy, there isn't much call from auto trannys for/from 528e's. Try the For Sale/Wanted section of MyE28.com.
