Very nice. I had contemplated this swap but decided if I am swapping engines, I wouldn't put another V8 in there.

My motto is Go Big or Go Home, so I'd rather like a S85 V10

I too am interested in this swap. Documentation on this swap will be very valuable to all of us that might consider this swap.

    Thanks!

Yo HS, think he was referring to the V8 thing since that M motor is actually a V10. Happy new year BTW

    The E39 M5 engine is a V8... S62. The E60 M5 engine is a V10... S85.

    Eff that noise...

To be honest, a S85-powered E38 would be pretty frickin' awesome! I think a S62 swap is much easier, though.

It will automerge. I think the S62 is the limits for an E38.. Actually never mind. If the S63 AMG has a kickin 6,2L V8 and S65 has the V12.. The S62 is juss perfect

^What would be more reliable of the two? (the S85/S62) Why not put a Corvette motor in and disturb the BMW gods? : )

If both swaps are done properly reliability shouldn't be be an issue, NA or FI, and for the corvette swap, I've actually seem they done on e30's,mazda rx7 etc. I think the best bang for you buck if your looking for HP.

This is a lovely idea and I'm really looking forward to seeing the result purely out of interest. But I ask those who are considering such a swap: why not get an M5 instead?

I'm guessing that for most of us the E38 is the main mode of transport, clocking 35k+ miles a year. Add to that the fact that most of us probably have E38's because we couldn't afford anything "better" and fell in love with the car in the process. This really begs the question of fuel economy. I'm not sure what the prices of gas are in the US but in Europe, running an S62 E38 at that milage would cost around $45/100 miles. That's $15k in gas alone each year.

To put it short, an M5 would not only handle that power better but be more fun to drive and in the long run probably cheaper too if you were to use the E38 daily and M5 for having fun. I'd love to chuck an S62 into my E38 but the cost of the engine and swap is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'm happy with my M62 with a future 6-speed swap. Maybe a super-charger and its aaall good. V10 is over-kill and waay to heavy for an E38. Super nose heavy.
