    740i or 740iL wanted!

Please: Advise about '93 740i purchase

    Dear Friends,

I am new to this board but I am very excited about becoming a potential BMW owner. I have always been fascinated by the cars and my brother has a beautiful 325i (and loves it!)

Anyways, I have the opportunity to purchase a 1993 740i with 88.000 miles on it in absolutely beautiful condition. It has only had two owners: a father and then a son who took wonderful care of it. I read the first few posts in this forum about what to look for in a pre-owned BMW and stuff and that was very helpful. But, to hear from experiences people would be great and very much appreciated.

Of course, my first question would be, "how much???" What is a reasonable amount considering the age and miles? Is it even worth the lower price? Should I wait and save for a new one? Any other thoughts or comments?

I really appreciate the advice and I will soon be to the place where a newer BMW will be purchased, but, until then, I still want to drive the best but at a lower cost!!!

    THANKS!

    more space pls kthx.
    OK,

Your profile says Tampa.. like me you're in the Southeast, so you have to worry about the Nikasil issue.

See if the car has had it's block replaced, if NOT, have a leak-down compression test done on the engine. That's the biggie.

Now, how much do they want for it? If it's clean, and doesnt have many problems (ALL Old 7s have problems) the car is worth about $6,000-$6,500 wholesale if it's MINT, so if YOU owned it I would say to ask $9,500 and take $7,500-8K on a private party transaction (I'm a dealer and I sell lots of BMWs..I have some experience here

So what do they want for it? Be careful with used 7s, they have enormous book values, but reality of the marketplace is another thing.

    Hmm...
Pricing in Germany is like this...

Below is a link of a nice car, comparable to your option.
If you click above the picture (click on: weitere Bilder... )
You can see more pics of the car.
    Enjoy

i bought a 93 740i last year with 90K... pretty much the same thing you are looking at. i can honestly say that i don't have a single complaint about the car. not even in the most minute manner, the car is just wonderful!

Wiseguy pretty much summed the pricing and nikasil issues up...

another tip that a lot of people dont know or exercise is getting the records from a dealership. if they had work/maintennance done on the car at a dealership, have the owner go to any BMW dealership and give them the VIN#. every single work order is on file.

if the car has had thorough upkeep through all its years, you wont have problems. the person who owned my car before me treated it with great care. and after having the car for a year, my car is yet to have repair. the car tells you when there is something wrong. so as long as you give it a little TLC and pay attn to fluid levels,etc- it will run like a dream!

    94' 740I

    Hey,

I bought a 94' 740i back in April and I am thirlled with it. Black on Black. I was looking for something else to drive and when I saw it I just had to have it. Every day I drive it I can't help but praise God for giving BMW the expertise of building such fine cars. It's big without being too big. It's comfortable and has lots of power. And considering what it is it was fairly cheap. Especially when I think of what I could have gotten for the same money. I paid 9k for mine and it's been the best car purchase I've ever made.: : : : :

I paid 2,500.00USD for mine in California, followed by 3 months of work and about another $6,500 and counting. I picked the car as the colors are the same as the one I had about 20 years ago..So it had centimental value. I'd have gladly paid 6-8K for the car if it was all dialed in and had been actually driven for the last 18 years or so Now, though, I couldn't be happier, save a couple little gremlins still..

    I had to redo:

    Spark plugs
    Brakes
Driveshaft (Turns out center carrier was broken!)
Cooling system refresh (although I still have the original radiator and tank)
    AC Charge/purge
Transmission filter/fluid/ BMW computer reset of faults (working great now!)
    Wet sand and polish body
    Fuel system service, pump, filters
    Windshield
Rear Bumper gasket replacement and repaint of top of trim
    All front suspension/steering bushings
    Rear trailing arm bushings, dogbones
    Exhaust hangers

It is probably more than $6500 lol..But I'm still very happy with the car..

with the search function problem a lot of old threads show up. I was searching 2 days ago and also found threads from 2003, but nothing new.
Advanced search partially functioning now. Won’t return anything newer than from 2005.
Latest news from admin: The host is still working on getting it resolved. They are going to migrate us to a new set of hardware.
