Earplugs Req'd: Grinding, shearing metal sound

What the heck is this sound???? Starter not disengaging?

Car starts fine, shifts through gears fine, no CEL's.....Car was running fine yesterday until the 3-4 cycle of the day, then it gave up. Oil level is good, no "major" fluid leaks, best I can tell it is coming from the starter area.

BTW, this my 1995 525a. I will have another video from the topside later today.

Yep, the starter is hung in. If it's not already destroyed it will be soon.

Starter can be pulled out without removing the intake if you have snake hands. Its not too, too bad.

Boy I hope you are right. I can't believe the starer on the M50 is so difficult to get to.

Oh that familiar sound that I hoped I would never hear again. Horrible isn't it? But yeah, they are correct, starter not disengaging. I got 1 from a member on here for $50 and now it starts smoother than ever.

If you can't reach it with snake hands, pull the intake manifold. Don't go nuts trying to reach up under there with 3' extensions below near the trans. You can remove the like 7 intake manifold nuts and boom its right there.

    Trolling much, ESS?

OP, you already know it's the starter from everyone above, so I'll just say good luck.

I will be digging into it today. Thanks for the tips!

    Update:

Torx/Star Bolts.........what the H$ll. The two bolts that hold the starter to the transmission bell are Torx. Had to go buy sockets for it yesterday. This morning, one is already stripped.

What is the secret to removing the starter???????
