That's great! Can you get the VIN or Baur Number on the car, or tell me a way for me to find out that infof?

I would like to compare it to the two lists we have from Jeroen to see if it is on there, or if it is a new undiscovered car!! How about a pic!!!

Thanks, James!

OK, sighted in Merrick NY, September 2009. Naturally, Jeroen is among those who commented on the post. The guy is EVERYWHERE! This is reported to be a 1981, and it looks like a 320i.... or at least the M10 engine. Could this be one of the 23 unidentified US Spec cars? Check out the front grill.

Was this car identified, Jeroen?

Why do you think that's a US-Spec car Tom?? I'd say it's Euro mostly because of the Euro bumpers.

BTW, ever hear anything back from anyone at ASC about my car??

1978 318 sighted for sale in Santa Monica (City of Industry?), CA 9/28/2009. Sold for $3000. Red with grey interior.
#70332 in Jeroen's pic list is a sad looking red 318. That is also a low number, early Baur. Could this be it?

I was just speculating on the US Spec idea because it has the M10 and it has both front and rear side markers. The front grille has been changed, so the bumpers could have been changed also.
All the US Spec cars were M10s, and many of the non-US Spec may have had it also. Any M20 would automatically NOT be US Spec. That's all. Just a guess, really. I am optimistically hoping to find a few more of those unaccounted for 23 cars.

The Merrick, NY and Santa Monica, CA cars have been added to the Baur map.
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en...0262f15966&z=3

I haven't heard anything back on the ASC yet, but I have been busy. I will try to contact that guy in the next week or so.

Seen in the image. Some of you will recall this “donor” gem on ebay a while back. It came with no BAUR identification due in part to the front end having been completely replaced. The only remaining evidence of ever having been a real TC1 (non 323) was some of the euro parts, roof assembly, plus the two rivet holes for the euro spec ID tag (not baur tag) on the passenger side were evident. Otherwise, the VIN comes up as a 1979 US model.

So for those of you tracking the whereabouts, here is an update. ;-)

Here is how it is shaping up. Rubinrot is a good color to be risen out of the ashes
Jeroen, forgive me if this is old news, but.... conkitchen's white baur in the post above (Post #5 in this thread on page 1, with pic)... I believe it could be this mystery car, from the Baur Registry site, could it not?

http://www.baur-tc1.de/tc1-no-us-umbau.html

Look at the wheels, the little reflectors on the front quarter panels, the chrome wheel well covers, and the spoiler.

Conkitchen, is that your white car on the Baur Registry, with Oregon plates.... and the 320is badge on the trunk?

I'm sure it isn't a US-car, because this colour (Zypressengrün-metallic 152) wasn't used on a 320i US. I also would like to know why this couldn't be a M20 320/6. Because these have also the single exhaust like the M10's.

From what I can make of it:
-Zypressengrün
-Brown roof
-Light interior (stoff pergament)
But then my problem: what colour are the (rear) windows? From what I can see, they are "not coloured" or brown. He also tells us that the car is from 1981. If the windows are not green-tinted, that would leave a single car. The 320/6 A72594. A car once owned by Christiane Baur.

The car in the picture is the A71905, still owned by it's German lady-owner as far as I know. At least I'm sure it's not the A70332

But I'm sure that Conkitchens car and the mystery-car on Baur-TC1.de are the same.

Hi Jeroen,

I stand corrected... I forgot the320/6 exhaust uses a single pipe. I find the color can be hard to pin down also due to the quality of the pic, computer images, etc. I humbly defer to your more experienced judgment. Any way to get more info on whether that is the car owned by Christiane Baur? Conkitchen's wrecked car is attributed to another Baur family member, if memory serves, correct? Very interesting.

As far as the red Baur.... that is the pic that accompanied the advertisement. Whether it is a pic of the actual car for sale could well be another matter. I wondered about that front plate, also.... but those are available for sale over here, as decorative plates.

Hmm, yeah, but the side markers are NOT from a US Spec E21, they look like something typically used by the jacklegs who federalized grey market cars. I've seen everything from 18 wheeler clearance lights to the crappiest Pep Boys generic lights used for this sort of thing. It's sad really.

I also did not know (thanks Jeroen!) that the 320/6 had a single outlet tailpipe.

Thanks Tom for checking on the ASC connection, I've always been very curious about that, but never able to find any firm info about it.

Hi Tom,

Yes, the A72565 was from Michael Baur.

I don't know how it is exactly, but here a small view of the Baur-family:
-Founder: Karl Baur
-Sons: Karl Jr. & Heinz
-Grandsons: Michael (son of Karl Jr.) & Andreas (son of Heinz)

And some other names:
-Christiane
-Anneliese
-Wiltrud
-Ralph

If the three ladies or sisters or wives, I don't have a clue. From what I know, Karl Jr. died a bit more than a year ago, Anneliese died some years ago. So I think she was about the same age as Karl Jr./Heinz.

Another name that you should know as Baur-fanatic is the name of Hermann Wenzelburger. He was the (co-)designer of the Baur TC's. He's still alive (now 83 I think) and still has a lot of interest in "his" creations. He was also at the 100th anniversery of Baur last year.

If anyone wonders what happened after "Baur", you can read this article about Michael Baur from december last year:

It's the A74403...

But that can't be right. Because the A74403 should have been a 323i RHD in Polaris with blue roof.

This 318i is Ascotgrey-metallic. But I can't figure out which one, the combination
-318i-Ascot-Anthrazit interior-Green windows-black roof gives 5 possible cars.

Jeroen,

I don't think it is the 74403.... but rather it is the one before 74403 at the beginning of this thread..... which has no number associated with it, at least in the version I received from you. The first pic in post #2 of this thread (pictured above). What number is that? That is definitely the car, isn't it? If I am reading the list correctly, 74403 is the wrecked/stripped one pictured immediately after it, just above 74587, the US model that was sold in Mathews VA last year.

Update: I checked your registry: #74389 picture matches this car. However, the registry says it is a 323iA.... an automatic. The car in the registry pic seems to have a 318i badge, same as this; and it shows it having a manual transmission. Same as this.

You are absolutely right on the red car pictured for sale in Santa Monica.... that pic is right off your Registry.

So, since the car pictured in the advert is believed to be still owned by the lady in Germany.... and the car for sale was stated to be red with grey interior.... the car that was sold in CA for $3000 still COULD be the Baur #A70332, the sad looking one in your first post. Maybe that is why the seller posted a misleading picture of the prettier car in the first place. Wouldn't be the first time.

Or it could be another car altogether.

IMHO the car is not a 320i, but a 323i. Look at the dual tailpipes.

Absolutely, Harry. That didn't even register for me.... I was just reacting to what the Museum had it listed as.

Good thing ONE of us is paying attention, Hawkeye!

I don't see it in Jeroen's picture list of US Baurs.

I wonder if there are any other Baurs 'hiding in plain sight' in other museums like this. If Jeroen doesn't already have it, I will try to contact the Bullenstall to get the VIN and Baur # when I get the chance. We got slammed with another 1 1/2 feet of snow overnight, so I will be kind of tied up for a while shovelling/snowblowing out. Heavy, wet, 'heart-attack' snow, btw. I can't wait.

I'm almost 100% sure it's not a 320i US. If the roof is the original one, it could/should be A72584. Because that is the only 323i in Kashmir-metallic 143 with a black PVC roof.

I don't see A72584 in the International Baur Registry. So if this is that car, it is a new Baur discovery, correct? !!

2:40 pm thursday:
Scott gave me the OK to paste this email exchange today regarding that Baur at the Bullenstall Museum in Mechanicsburg PA.

I love these stories, and I hope you enjoy it too.

Ever hear of the Bullenstall Museum?

If it still exists, and if you are looking for something to do sometime... perhaps you may consider a little ride over there, or a phone call .... to check it out for us? No obligation, of course. Certainly not in this weather too!!

Just a thought. I hope your Baur/your son's Baur is coming along.

Hi tom. Nice to here from you. I have heard of the Bullenstahl. I know the Ulloms, that own it. I have never gone to see it though, always to busy, i guess. It is only 12 miles or so from our house. I did however have a great conversation with Ed Ullom at the Carlisle import show,he had quite a nice collection there. There was his ///M1, a Z1, a Z8, 635csi, 3.3csi, 2002 touring, a 1600 convertible that has tii running gear, And his Pearl white 2002 turbo. He is an amazing guy. I worked at the shop that did the restos on the 3.3csi,and the 2002 turbo. The turbo was a massive job, but if you get the chance to check it out it is SWEEEEEET! The bottom of the car was tri staged with pearl just like the rest of the car. But the best part was when we told him of our Baur he was all like, Damn thats a rare one! As he sits the next to Half a million dollars worth of awsomeness!

Great to hear from you. Maybe you can come down and we will hit the Bullenstahl sometime. We are grinding away(pun intended) on the baur right now. It unfortunatly had a 2.7 e motor put in it, so we think we are going with a 3.5 m30. and 5 speed.

Cheers,
Scott.

Hi Scott,

What a great story that is!!! Because of this thread, I knew you were in the general area there, so I thought I 'd give you a shout, on the off-chance that you could find something. Unbelievable.... you already KNOW the guy!!! Amazing.

I'd love for you to post this in the thread, or, if you don't mind, I would just cut and paste it there. I think the other members would enjoy it also.

Good luck with your Baur. I may take you up on that offer at some point. I am a Civil War buff, and I would love to combine a trip to Gettysburg /Antietam with a visit to Carlisle, which is near you. Sounds like a perfect trip to me. Now I will just have to work on You-Know-Who.

Found this post tonight from 6/8/2010 German Car Forum: car was located in Nevada City, California.

NO other information available. Yet.

"1983 320i Baur TC convertible
I have a Baur TC 320i 1983 convertible Euro model import. It was given to me as a gift a few years ago. It's come time to sell it and get a four wheel drive to commute in the snow.
Its a great car and runner 153,000 miles with a new top. It needs interior work, some of the plastic hardware is breaking, due to getting brittle with age. I was wanting some advise on sales pricing, how rare is the car? some say only about 50 in the US. Only 5000 were ever made.
Can anyone help?

Thanks much-
Raven"

Alright hi everyone. Tomcat sent me a pm about the bullenstall being that it is a 20 min drive from us. I decided to go today pretty much just to see this baur. I had heard it was Garth Ulloms car, the son of Ed Ullom who used to own CVM autopark. Well when i went Ed wasnt there but i talked to one of his employees on the phone to make sure they were open and off i went. I walked in to a dark roon seeing only old Roundel and VW dealership signs lit up. I spoke to a worker there and he flipped on the lights for me. Keep in mind he has cars other than BMW's there but i hurdled a snow plow on the front of an international scout, ran past a 327/B, an e30 ///M3, a z8 and z1 and a really cool '67 1600 cab just to see the baur. The guy kind of looked at me funny, but then told us Ed's e21 m10 turbo was his fav so we all have our tastes. I kindly asked the man if i could pop the hood on this car and he replied "yes you can on any of the cars" well i didnt pop every hood but the z8 got viewed. Anyway the baur is owned by Ed himself. It is a 1980 320/6 carbed that he put the duel ehhaust on, it threw me too. It is kashmirbeige with black and grey plaid cloth seats from what i could see under the seat covers, and the black vinyl top. the VIN is WBA18110006918782 and the baur plate is 1282.

We asked about having groups come there to hang and have good times and they are open every other saturday. Anyone who wants to have the 1st annual US TC1 meet there let me know and we can start to make the arrangements. Keep your fingers crossed mine will be back on the road for this season.

Thank you for asking me about this TC Tomcat between you and I, we have documentation for 1 more TC1 keep up the good work!!!

Great job, Scott!

for anyone who may not be familiar with the name Garth Ulloms, (like me for example prior to this thread):

Update:
I found this in an old issue of Der Bayerische October 1980
(the official publication of the National Capital Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America, Inc. and is not in any way connected with the Bayerische Motoren Werke AG or BMW of North America, Inc.).

Garth Ullom is mentioned earlier in this thread as the possible owner of the Baur pictured at the Bullenstall Museum owned by Ed Ullom, his father. It now appears that Ed himself is the actual owner.

PROFILE - RACING BMW's

Garth Ullom has raced BMWs in SCCA competition for five years, plus. Classes of competition have ranged from Modified B Sedan to Show Room Stock (SS) which are street legal [automobiles modified only to increase them from a safety standpoint. Garth, who has been selling BMWs for a period of eight years is sponsored in part by Cumberland Valley Motors, the dealership with which he is associated. For the past two years he has been racing a SS Class B, 1978, 320i. In 1979, Ullom had six wins in national events (events at which points are awarded to top finishers which result in an invitation to Road Atlanta for the National runoffs). During that season Ullom set two tract records at Watkins Glen. However, as luck may have it, the season's finale for Garth was an eleventh place at Road Atlanta.
This year Ullom's finishes have been varied with three wins, two seconds, and one sixth place. In the unofficial standings he is ranked second in the division and is looking toward Road Atlanta. There will be need to do some additional preparation this year in order to avoid another eleventh-place finish. Also, Garth will be driving] a not so familiar car, that of his father who also races. The reason behind the car change stems from an armco at Lime Rock that performed its function all so well. It kept Garth's car from careening off the track but at the same time applied extensive damage to the car. Garth says he has turned to the factory for technical advice and support when competitors have filed grievances relative to the car's factory status. He is pleased with' the factory's response but is a little surprised at their limited participation. It appears as though Garth Ullom lives and breaths BMW. For this, the avid BMW car enthusiast must say, "a victory at Road Atlanta for the car's sake."

Thanks Scott,

That car was originally sold in Germany by cardealer FedderLund GmbH in Flensburg, that's in the most north part of Germany. And the place from where all the speedtickets are sent

Congrats again on a job well done!

Your suggestion for a possible Baur TC event has some merit, and deserves some thought. I personally kind of like the idea, although you are about 300 miles from me. But you are about 300+ miles from a lot of folks, so that is sort of an equalizer.

Anyway, I was thinking about it..... it would require a fair amount of plannning to be worth doing, and to ensure its success. I really like the idea a lot, but there are pros and cons, naturally. I have a lot of ideas about it, but more on that later. I am curious what others think about it, as a preliminary gauge to the interest level.

The simplest way may be to contact the Nittany Bimmers Chapter (they held the event at Bullenstall last fall that the pics above came from), and see if there is something in their plans that our little group could plug into. Why reinvent the wheel? They may be very receptive to including a group of Vintage E21s and E21 Baurs in the schedule. And they would already have the logistics (all the hard work) in place for it, perhaps.

Just a thought. Wide open to any other suggestions/ criticisms, etc. I think the idea has potential.

Good work on adding to the list, any kind of baur meetup would be cool I vote for having it in ft. Nelson BC canada that is only a 3 day drive from here lol.....other wise I'll likely not be able to make it, unless we move back to civilization, but since we just bought a 325k house I'm guessing we aren't going any where soon.

The Frozen Baur (AKA The Frozen Ground) now on Netflix (John Cussack is driving the Omega behind the Baur)

OK, Jeff. Thanks for the suggestion. I have put a pin on the Baur map showing the proposed location (Fort Nelson, BC) so folks can think about it.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en...0262f15966&z=3

The good news is that it is pretty simple to find: just take Route 97 out of Vancouver, head north for a week, or maybe two. You can't miss it.

If you get to the North Pole, you have gone too far....... but not by much.

All suggestions welcome.

Why not a meet at The Vintage in NC? This was formerly called Vintage at the Vineyards.
