Yes! Finally. This is the car from Denver CO. He sold it to someone In Denver in 2008, and we are trying track it down. I emailed the guy he thought he sold it to, but he has not responded.

Here is another mystery car from Jeroen. His friend Pieter found this on the internet... but has no info on it at all.

That looks to me like an Ohio Collector plate, and the car appears to be at a German Car event, as opposed to a BMW only event. BMW CCA sticker on the window. Judging from the Mercedes 190SL (I think) Gull Wing in the background, and all those Porsches, I am guessing that this is a fairly significant event.... perhaps the All German Car Show hosted by the Central Ohio Section, Mercedes Benz Club of America that has been held for the past 9 years in conjunction with Oktoberfest in the Columbus or Dublin area.

Any info or thoughts are most welcome.... for example, can anyone identify what car show might use that little sign with the green letterhead on the grass in front of the car?
If you check the Baur map, we have NO reports of any Baurs anywhere around there, so this potential car is all the more interesting. It is a pretty nice example too.

Wow, James! Thanks for that pic. You will notice that I have put that car on the map already.

Can you get the VIN # and the Baur # on that car? That would be much appreciated, to see if it matches any of the cars we have listed, or if it is another previously unknown car. I see there are no rear side markers, and the bumpers have been removed. Was it ever federalized?

Any other info would be great also... model, engine, transmission, color, etc. Thank you very much.

Thanks, James, that is helpful. So it is not a US Spec..... does it match any of the cars that Jeroen posted at the beginning of this thread? The VIN/Baur # would clear that up, if you get the chance to get that.

    Thanks again!

Haha, some guys in the Netherlands have the same problem. They all drive 323i Baur's, thought to be the rarest. But that's not true, it's the most produced TC1 after the 320/6. And now there are about 30 323i TC1 in the Netherlands. They even started thinking about buying 315's...with only 61 build and 3 in the Netherlands

At least I'm pretty sure I have the only baur in at least 500,000 square miles, that has to count for something. I think Alaska is larger than most of Europe...

Jeff, should you decide to sell it at some point.... not that I think you would----I don't think you have anything to worry about. Your car is not only a stunningly beautiful example of a very rare car, it is a movie star, and it is the car that did Alaskabimmer's Odyssey! I STILL think that National Geographic, and others, would love to have the rights to that story. You may have the Most Famous Baur in the World!!!!

    No?

Name another. I rest my case.

    http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en...0262f15966&z=3

If you DO decide to sell at some point, the 500,000 sq miles would be your biggest problem .... finding a buyer. If it comes to that.... don't fret.... just ....

And, btw, this little adventure of locating the US Baurs... contrary to your joking comment earlier about devalueing the car.... I think quite the opposite: whether there are 25, 125, or 225 Baurs in the US---- and that may be close to the ceiling realistically---- the USA has a population of over 300 million now, I believe. That is a lot of potential buyers, even for a niche market car like the Baur. As the awareness of the E21 increases---- and your movie star Baur may play a role in that----, so will the value. And not just for the Baurs, but for all E21s.

    This didn't hurt either:
    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN7J7NyrEsY"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN7J7NyrEsY[/ame]
Part of the reason the E21 is presently undervalued--- IMHO---- is, obviously, because it is overshadowed by its more famous predecessor, the 2002 and by its progeny, the E30. Those are great cars, and deserving of the accolades. But IMHO, the E21 is by far the better looking of the three, if somewhat underpowered in stock trim, perhaps--- the 2002 is rather primitive and ugly by comparison (sorry '02 lovers) and the E30 (I have two of them) is a great car, but sorta pedestrian in appearance.... so, our day will come! If I wanna go out for a fun ride, I take the E21. Like this for example:
    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1xJ8WWEaMk"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1xJ8WWEaMk[/ame]
That is my 1977 carbed white 320i... at a Holeshot 100' Drag Race last October (yes, it was my birthday), my first time ever .... I was turning 7K in first gear at the finish line! What a rush! And what a blast! That is a $600 car that is rust-free, sunroof delete, 2.0L weber-carbed, 5 speed, headers, front strut bar, 14' Momo wheels, Nardi wood steering wheel, and recaros. Did I mention it is a blast to drive? If anyone can beat that for 600 bucks I will tip my hat and raise you a toast!

I am not in this for the money, and I think it foolish for anyone who might be. It is a hobby for me. But I do think that anything that promotes the awareness of the E21, whether it be the Baur or any other model, will continue enhance its value.

So let's track down those E21 Baurs!

No BAUR insignia, nor a Baur plate under the hood on this one either (the white one above from Denver). I suppose they could have been removed. How common is this, Jeroen.... no Baur plate on left front quarter panel nor on the roll bar? Is that anything worth noting?

OK. Jeroen's revised original post had 33 Baurs. We have found some identification of some sort for 18 of those. The other 15 we have no information on.
His list of US Spec cars added 25 more, one of which (#4587) was on his original list of 33... so a net of 24 additional Baurs.
I have added pics of 8 additional cars (including rigmasters two); four of which do not appear on either list. The other four VIN #s have not been determined, so it is unknown if they are on either list at this point.

    http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en...0262f15966&z=3

On the map above, we have references to 19 other Baurs. Some, like Will Bryant's and Mayan Arch, are known to exist, but have not been identified by VIN. Others of the 19 are only recollections or sightings of Baurs, some from a long time ago, and nothing more is known of them. It also cannot be determined if some of those are duplications of other cars that ARE known, or if they even still exist at this point. Additionally, there are an unknown number of Baurs hidden away in garages, barns,.... or even in plain sight.... that we have heard nothing at all about yet.

    Anyway:
33 + 24 + 8 + 19 = 84. That is probably a high estimate of the Baur TC1s in the US, because there are significant numbers included there that have not been positively identified, and it is possible that there may be some duplication in the count. Also, how many of the unidentified 15 in Jeroen's original list, and the unidentified remaining 23 from the US Spec list still exist? It is a low estimate in the sense that we don't know what we don't know: how many US Baurs have simply not been spotted yet. No one knows how many were brought into the country over the years.

The operative word in the above is: estimates. Those are really just semi-educated guesses, subject, for example, to the fact that I may have really screwed up the math to arrive at them also. Never rule THAT out!

Any help, suggestions, or criticisms on all of the above is welcome at any time, as well as any help in identifying the above Baurs, or reporting any new sightings is greatly appreciated.

Kudos to E21Adam for identifying that beautiful Ohio Baur! He saw it at the Ault Park Concours d'Elegance 2009. http://www.ohioconcours.com/carsbycl...%20-%20Present

    Info from German contemporary class:
    1982 BMW323i Baur Convertible
    Owner - Erik Hunter
    Kettering , OH

Now the question is to determine the VIN and Baur #s to see if it appears in Jeroen's pic list of 33 Baurs, or if it is another previously unknown car.

I did some checking.... I was wrong on the Mercedes 190 SL Gull Wing in the background.... it was a 300SL Gull Wing!!!! My Goodness Gracious! This Concours D'Elegance also featured a Mercedes MacLaren and a BMW M1, among others. Nice.

After scrutinizing Jeroen's list of 33 cars ... and checking those of similar color, it appears to me that this 1982 323i Baur from Kettering, Ohio is NOT on that list. Since it is also a 323i, it can't be on the list of 23 US Spec cars. That means it is a new discovery. !!!!

Thanks to E21Adam for your help!

A friend of mine in northern Georgia said there is a Baur in Chattanooga, TN. White with a black top, spoilers front and rear. That is all the info I have, while he looks to better identify it.

Any one in the Chattanooga area that may have heard of anything like this?

    Tom,

The e23 745 community in the early 80's tried cataloging all the cars in the US. We were shocked at how many we found. I think we are seeing the same results. There will be many more Baurs than we expected.

Jeroen has done a remarkable job maintaining the registry and I applaud your efforts in pushing the search.

    Hi Tom,

These Baur-insignia are easy to remove, although you'd probably see that under the insignia the colour didn't fate.

The "collector"-Baur seems to have colourless windows. Any one who has better eyes than me who can check this (can you find this out with photoshop?)?

@Bruce: it's normal that without a register, most people think to low.

    Gr Jeroen

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the kind words. It is a lot of fun doing this, but it couldn't happen without the support of Jeroen and others, and without the interest, eyes and ears of the great folks on this forum. I hope it is some benefit to all.

Do you happen to know if Will Bryant's car appears in Jeroen's picture list at the beginning of this thread? There are a couple of similar cars, one is yours, of course, one is Bill in MN, and another is dhlthr's in Texas---- but I thought that #2679 had some resemblance to his... though not a perfect match. It has rear side markers, black mirrors, different tailpipes, no wood wheel, etc. The wheels, rear spoiler and possibly license plate may match, though. If the pics that Harry PR and Jeroen posted later on show the same car, then he has done a beautiful job with it.

No, I don't see it. 2679 is close, the wheels are close but Wil's car has oval (Bonini?) exhaust tips and no fill-in reflector panel on the rear. In fact his black rear fill panel between the tail lights is color matched to the car.

I'll nudge him via email to register.

Back side of Wil's car attached.

Thanks. Those are two fine-looking automobiles there. Kudos.

Wow, James. Now there is a surprise! How did you learn that, James? Do you have a contact there.... anyway to confirm that? Do you have any specifics on it. I love it! Thanks for the info! I tried to email them, but I can't get a good email address. Do you have one?
