So someone finally bought this! I was looking at this on cl recently, too. It was up there for a while (Sorry, I didn't think to "report" it.)

I actually considered buying this car 10-15 years ago when it was pristine. Was considering it again now, but it's obviously didn't happen. Funny to see it resurface again.

I got an email this morning from Uwe of the International Baur Register. He spotted either this thread or the post about this car on my blog, and he has now added Baur #4486 to the International Register! Another Baur has 'come in from the cold'!

I also contacted a guy at Park Blvd BMW in NJ, the dealer who imported your car, and probably arranged for ASC to convert it. He had no direct first hand info, however, and suggested I contact the company owner, who was also the owner at the time your car came in. I have not done that yet. Life intervenes.

I don't know if you saw this.... but I recently did an 8-part pictorial on the restoration of the first Baur (Baur plate #000001) by Andreas T., in Belgium on my blog. This link is Part VIII, which summarizes what has gone before.
    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/2011/11/first-baur-restoration-project_23.html

I am thinking of trying to do a similar story on other Baurs, especially Baurs of some historic significance, like yours appears to be. I would need to engage with ASC and park Blvd people to accomplish this, and I think they may have interest in helping out, perhaps.

(Your ASC plate and the plate of Baur #000001 (attached) have a certain common feature, that is of considerable interest.)

What are you doing with your car presently? Are you restoring, or considering restoring it? If I recall correctly, you were also perhaps considering putting it up for sale. Where do you stand on that?

Let me know what your plans are. I do hope to move ahead with this story as time allows, and I will need your assistance to do so. Is this something you would be interested in? Let me know.

    Tom,

thanks for the reply and the info.

My Baur is currently stored in my garage, much to the chagrin of my wife.

I really don't think I have the motivation to do much more with it- I really need to sell it. It's been sitting for several years, inside, but it will likely need a good bit of TLC to get it road-worthy again. I know it's not worth tons of $$ as it sits, but I can't afford to give it away for nothing.

Right after I bought the car, I replaced the 4 speed transmission with a 5 speed from a later 320i. I also swapped in some 320is Recaro seats that are in great shape (I still have the original stock black vinyl seats that could be swapped back in). I also cut out some of the rusty floor on the drivers' side and patched it with about 5 layers of fiberglass.

We drove the car to Carlisle PA for the Import show several years in a row, with absolutely no problems. One of the last outings was to Vintage At the Vineyards several years ago, after which I parked the car and it really hasn't been driven since.

So, if you or anyone else might be interested in owning this car, feel free to PM or email me and we'll discuss it.

I'd be glad to help in any way I can with finding more info about the car from former ASC employees, just let me know what I can do.

    Tomscat,
I am amused that a guy in Connecticut is responsible for connecting two guys that are practically in the same neighborhood, perhaps 2-3 miles away. Mark and I met this morning and had some good conversation about our cars. He's a very decent, knowledgeable and capable person. I'm glad to know him. Much appreciation for connecting us through your PM's.

    WHOA!

I'll be Damned! This is just amazing. My quote above is from page 5 post #110 of this thread, from January 2011. Your quote from the previous post is from December 4 2010 (post #24 in this thread page 1). The link at the very top is a post from 'sisith' in 2008.

If I understand you correctly, the Mark R that you just met with the Baur in Scottsdale, is THE SAME Mark that jimjim mentions in his thread last December... the guy that bought the $300 Baur in Tucson!!! And that is the same car that sisith mentions in 2008.

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing we have been talking about all along: several separate reports of Baurs from separate sources at separate times..... turn out to be the SAME CAR! Baur #118. Incredible.

Wow. It took us 10 months, with help from jimjim, docjohn, bimmerforums member sisith and, of course, Mark R himself.... but we frickin' NAILED IT! What a great story! Great job, fellas, and thanks for all of your help!!!

And, docjohn, I agree that it is just too funny how this worked out to get you two virtual neighbors hooked up like this! We are working hard here at Baurspotting, and this kind of stuff is just what we hope for! And don't forget.... toyotech has seen another Baur in Tempe. If there is some way to get your three Baurs in the same pic..... you will have recorded the largest convocation of E21 Baurs in the US this year! In MANY years, perhaps! Who da thought that could happen in Arizona!!??

The attached pic is from jimjim's January 2010 post in this thread.
UPDATE: some more info from jimjim back in January 2011:
    tomscat1
"I help you . Yes it was federalized once owed by dan kenny ?
    engine 2.0 320/6, 4 speed
    James"
"I had his name miss spelled
    It's {dan Kennedy} sorry"
"Is Dan Kennedy your friend who just bought it for $300?

NO just the last name on title 2007 date
MY buddy that bought is a BMW E21 guy BUT NOT IN TO THE FORUMS AT ALL !!!
    James"

    ________________________________________________

Thank you again jimjim for that info. So we know that Dan Kennedy owned it in 2007; bimmerforums member "sisith" sold it to Mark R. Unless 'sisith' is also Dan Kennedy, it appears we have the past three owners of Baur 118 going back to 2007. Great stuff!
This is a great story that you helped make happen, jimjim! Thank you!

From the comments on that thread, it doesn't look like he got anywhere near his original 'buy it now' asking price ($4500)... Jeff (Alaskabimmer) reported the bidding at $323.00... so it may still be sitting in West LA unsold.

As for the 71330, I used the 'body number' as the VIN,... not having anything else... and that probably explains why it came up as a 1973. Your VIN looks like the right car.... and hopefully GSCReno can find some pics.

James, thanks for the Ireland Engineering update also. I will take that one off the Baur map. Any other info on your friend who bought that Baur form Central Tucson? VIN or Baur number? We saw the pic of it on the trailer.

I just found this recent post by "E21Baur", Torrance, CA. I don't know how I missed the clue that he may have a Baur but I have now emailed him to invite him here, and I have posted this info on the map.

    Hi James,

Look what I found! Your buddy's car on craig's list, with more pics! I assumed that ad was long gone. How is he making out with it?

I have a very rare 1978 Baur 320/6 imported from germany. This is one of a very few convertibles that were made in the Baur factory in germany. Has a clean and clear title and the original stamped card in the engine bay denoting that this body is in fact an original Baur. Many of the parts have been stripped off of it and it does not run. The engine looks to have been converted to use a Holley carb, and when I removed the valve cover to check the internals they were pristine! I mean really, really clean. Almost as if no one has even started the engine since putting it in. Will need to be town away, but this is a great investment for someone who wants to do a full restore on a truly rare car!

Thanks to Clio320i in the Facebook E21 Legion page, we have identified a previously unknown Baur that was spotted a couple of years ago in Portland OR. It belongs to bimmerforums member 85baur320i.

Check out post #165 (above) which appeared February 2011 in this thread:
    http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...+the+us&page=7

Thanks, Clio320i, and welcome 85baur320i! Looks like a beauty! I don't have the Baur number plate yet, but I will work on it.

That is also seth's black TC1 included in the thread, along with the car from tucson now owned by Mark R.

Wow, we now have successfully identified all three Baurs in this old post, and all of their owners are known in this forum! That is amazing to me. It is indeed a small world. Thanks to all!

1979 Baur 320/6 on eBay Germany

I know this forum is linked to some German E21 websites, so this one is for our friends across The Pond:

With thanks to Uwe from the Baur Register in Germany for this listing on eBay Germany.....

    (Translated from the original German)

I'm selling here a BMW Baur Convertible Single April 1979 The car is signed out since 2000 and since then has been dry
    in the garage.
It has a front and a rear apron, side sills as well as by Zender.
There was even a rear spoiler fitted, but not in the appropriate moment
is. There are two small holes in the tailgate is urgent but can seal easily.
The car is lowered with Bilstein suspension.
In the trunk of a 38 liter fuel tank is built of extra Alpina.
He has built beautiful alloy wheels 7x15 BBS
-Must be repainted if necessary, are otherwise in good condition.
The two sport seats from Recaro are in good condition. Only the driver's seat would have
be bolstered once again - see photo
The dash is in good condition without cracks.
The instrument cluster has a crack in the plexiglass you get on ebay but bought later well.
The motor is running at the moment with Start Pilot.
Runs but clean and without noise. The carburetor should be cleaned, so after a long life, he is not ready to drive.
I extended-fuel gauge of the tank after a long service life even without rust.
On the car of course would still have a lot to be done (rust, technology).
The rear window has a small hole.
In case of serious interest in the car can be visited at any time between HA and HB directly to the A1 motorway, and it will be no disagreement there.
Included are original BMW Baur and papers, conclusions and a set of steel rims.
Write with questions like email or phone 0179-5216143

Two Connecticut Baurs Make It Into DIE ZEITUNG, the CT Valley Chapter Magazine

You may recall this post from last July, when Baurspotting attended the BMWCCA Connecticut Valley Chapter (CVC) 'Bring More Wax' Show and Shine at Wickham Park in Manchester, CT. I arranged to meet there for the first time with Afonso, the owner of the only other known Baur in CT. Here is a link to that post.
    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/2011/07/two-e21-baurs-at-connecticut-valley.html

Well, we have an update to that post. The CT Valley Chapter publishes a great bi-monthly magazine (DIE ZEITUNG) of the club's activities. Botond Pal, photographer, was at the Show and Shine that day shooting pics of all the cars at the show. The magazine is now available online, and you can view his photos of the show, including pics of the two Baurs together. Here is the link:
    http://bmwccacvc.org/dzmagazine.htm

Check out the Sept-Oct 2011 edition, and turn to page 12-13. Our appearance is mentioned in the text, and we are pictured together at the center bottom of page 6. That pic was taken at the end of the show, just as both Afonso and I were in our cars leaving the park.
In addition, you can see Afonso's beautiful Baur in the pics on the left column (that is me in the white hat/blue shirt standing behind his car, btw). Afonso and I can also be seen in two pics on page 13, right column, center (I am in the white hat, Afonso is in the dark blue baseball cap). We are also in the pic above that one, seated together at lunch. It was a beautiful day for a picnic, and it was great to meet Afonso! Thank you to DIE ZEITUNG for the great coverage!
    http://issuu.com/ctvalley/docs/sept-oct_dz?mode=window&viewMode=doublePage

But that is not all. Check out page 6 of the same Sept-Oct 2011 edition. A few weeks before the Show and Shine (above) in Manchester, the CVC hosted a mid-week Ice Cream Social in Colchester, CT, which I was able to attend. This was my first event with the local chapter, and I was hoping to be able to learn more about another CT Baur that I had seen in pictures (thanks to bimmerforums member Davey101) at previous club events. I met club officers Lance Johnson and Dave Rich that night, and sure enough, they knew of the other Baur. Dave passed along my information to the other owner, who turned out to be Afonso, of course, and we were able to make arrangements to meet with our Baurs at the Show and Shine event depicted above. That is how it happened, folks. Thank you to Dave and Lance for helping make it happen.

But I digress. Page 6 has several pics of the Colchester Ice Cream Social. You can see the Baurspotting Baur in the background of the pic with the young lady, and also at the extreme left of the bottom pic on that page. There were some great cars at both shows, btw, including a number of M cars, Dinans, supercharged Z3s, etc., and I am grateful to the photographers--- and the editors--- for giving a little play to our beloved Baurs.

It is also worth noting that the most frequently heard comment in the vicinity of the Baurs at both of those shows was.... "I have never seen one of these in person before." So let's get those Baurs out to some shows this year, boys and girls!

P.S. I almost overlooked this.... but check out the cover of the magazine also... upper left corner, there is the Baurspotting Baur with the hood raised!

    Happy New Year!

    Baur in Florida

It is kind of funny. I was just contemplating a post about the fact that last night I did a nationwide search for Baurs actively for sale on craigs list and eBay. The only one I could come up with was this white one in Florida.
    http://miami.craigslist.org/pbc/cto/2757611841.html
As far as I can tell it is the ONLY Baur (a TC2, btw) that I could find anywhere in the entire country now!

And now it appears that it may not be available for long!!

A few minutes ago, I received an email from a former Baur owner who saw that Baur in my "Baurs for Sale' page on my blog, and he is currently arranging to have an inspection of it!!

    Stay tuned!

When is a Baur not a Baur?

I don't know what this guy was thinking, but this is clearly NOT a Baur.

It appears he has confused a Euro BMW with a Euro Baur BMW. I will give him the benefit of the doubt. It is a carbureted 318, unfortunately an automatic. That is undoubtedly a rare car on this side of The Pond. Cool.

For sale is my 1980 BMW 318. This is a grey market car, meaning it was not for sale in the US and had to be imported. The car has a 4 cylinder naturally aspirated (carb) 3 speed automatic, factory recaro bucket seats, 1000 watt Pioneer stereo paired with 1000 watt amp and a 12" 1200 watt lighted sub woofer. I lost my job and need money. Please call Joel at (518) 592-1097 Please no calls before 8a.m. or after 8p.m.

Don't contact me asking if this is still for sale, I WILL take the listing down when it sells

New listing for our German members:

1/30/2012 thanks to Uwe from the Baur registry we have a new listing from eBay Germany: Baur#1239-01.
    http://www.ebay.de/itm/180806036405?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p398 4.m1423.l2649

Interestingly, this car was originally listed on page 1 of this thread by Jeroen as Baur #1273. It now appears that may have been an error, since we see the same car for sale on eBay Germany with Baur plate #1239. We will continue to seek clarification on this.

    Stay tuned.

UPDATE: here is a pic from the International Baur Registry for the Baur still listed there as #1273, and stating that it is a US Baur, yet showing a Euro plate.

    More to come.

Request for Help froma Baur owner

I received this email today from Baur owner Matt, and I am posting it verbatim. Any help, suggestions, etc. greatly appreciated. Matt, btw, owns two Baurs, including this well-known one #917:
    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/201...-baur-917.html

    "Tom,
My 323i TC has one of the latches that lets go of the removable hard portion of the top 'frozen'. I was driving today, and heard the hard top jostling - like it wasn't securely latched down. I noticed the passenger's side latch handle wasn't fully in the 'up' position, so I gave it a hard push, and it went 'up'. The jostling continued. When I got to work, I found that I couldn't pull the latch down. Putting some considerable force on it, it finally moved, but in a not-so-good sounding way. Now whatever position I put that latch into, it won't release that side of the top.
Could you post this for me to see if your readers have any suggestions?
    Best,
    Matthew"

"The part: It's 54210006051, the right side top latch. I'd also take a 54210006049, the left side top latch. If you could post it, I'd appreciate it!

    matthew"

    Parts diagram here:
    http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E2...p_cabriolet-4/

Anyone have this part as a spare to sell?

    Thanks in advance.
