You may recall that in the late 1970's, there was much discussion about outlawing convertibles as unsafe, and most manufacturers, anticipating the convertible's demise, stopped their production. The last American convertible in that era, for example, was the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado. BMW contracted with coachbuilder Baur to produce a limited number of cabriolet-style cars to meet the demands of its customer base without going into full-scale tooling and production. The design of the BMW Baur reflected the safety concerns of the time, and that is why you see the built-in roll bar in the roof. While for some that detracts from the clean top-down looks of a traditional convertible, it also allows a unique versatility of roof configurations that no traditional convertible can match. The advertisement below is for a TC2, but the same features are available on the E21 TC1.
This advertisement touts the unique features of the Baur, calling it 4 cars in 1, a reference to the 4 different possible configurations of the roof: the Coupe, the Targa, the Landaulet, and the Cabriolet. Each configuration is shown at the bottom of the ad, from left to right.

TITLE IN HAND
Old car but a good one. New engine put in 4yrs ago and has low miles on it. Has a BAUR top, rear folds down and top pops off.
Needs the rear vinyl window re stiched or replaced. Someone might consider this to be a classic collectable car.5 speed, dual exhaust,6 cylinder, Lots of miles on the body but not the engine. Has a lot of potential to be a really nice car again. Runs great and is dependable just needs some work to be perfect. Needs tires eventually. BBS wheels
COLD AC isn't something you see everyday on a classic like this.
Again practically new engine.

I have a pic of the TC1 Baur plate, but I can't seem to load the other pics, for some reason.

Hi Tom,
Was really surprised to see that TC2-Poster here. First I thought it was my own, but then, mine isn't framed with wood but aluminium. Some searching: this one was photographed at the Baur-factory in 2002.
When I bought my poster earlier this year, it was the first time that I saw this poster! Markus Freitag from Baur TC IG also had a poster, of the TC1.
This year, we made some reproductions of these. But only a handfull and I don't believe there are some left.
Gr Jeroen
Jeroen,
I love that poster... and I would love to get a copy of the TC1 version!
Also, I got an email from Uwe H. yesterday who is the webmaster for this site:
http://bmwe21baur.npage.de
Check out the TC1 Register on that site .... I see a lot of pics of TC1 Baurs that originated from this thread or my blog! I like the way he did a single continuous page showing Baur #1 all the way to Baur #4595.
So, Baurhunters, we are making progress, and I really appreciate all the contributions you guys have made!
There has been a flurry of activity with US Baurs lately, and, with the Holiday, I am a little behind in keeping up with the tally. I believe we are now at about 60 (or more) confirmed Baur TC1s in the US! Plus about 30 + unconfirmed reports that we are still working on. So we are nowhere near done!
Stay tuned!

Good man, Vance! Thank you!
We got a tip on that one from E30 bimmerforums member boardM13 last weekend, and we have it posted in post #445 above. Thanks for the reminder, though. With all the Holiday hustle and bustle, and the little flurry of Baurs popping up this month, I have fallen a little behind with getting them all listed and located.

Although it is now a week after our American Thanksgiving holiday, I hope it is not too late for me to express my humble and grateful thanks to the thousands of folks in bimmerforums and around the world who help to make the BAURSPOTTING blog possible by their interest in, and enthusiasm for, these wonderful cars. Best Wishes for the Holiday Season, in whatever context you celebrate it! Thank you all. --- Tom
N.B. The amount of interest in this little niche market of BMW Baurs is simply amazing to me. As of this date, BAURSPOTTING is read in 99 countries around the world. Who da thought??!! Of course, I remind myself that this may only mean that we have found the 1 guy in 99 different countries with too much time on his hands! Like just about all of us, I'm constantly keeping an eye out for E21s and when I saw a Baur parked down the street from my sister-in-law's house a while back, I was doubly excited. Not only was it an E21, but a rare one to boot. I would make it a point to drive past the house whenever we venture over to visit my wife's younger sister in hopes of getting a chance to meet the owner. As we drove past the house today, opportunity finally came knocking and parked in the driveway, still damp from it's recent bath it sat.
Number 3426 was originally a Canadian car, but spent most of its life in Colorado and then came to Arizona 3 years ago when the current owner inherited it from his brother when he passed. Registering was apparently quite the adventure given its grey market roots.
Note the characteristic hazard switch
I informed the owner of Tom's blog and of our special little corner of BF.C that is the E21 section. I'll be sending him an e-mail with links to both shortly and will likely have future updates as he's in the market for a mechanic that knows how to work on it and I just happen to know one.
This is Toyotech's' original post on this Baur: 12/2/2010, post #9 on page 1 of this thread! WOo hoo!
Another one bites the dust!
Thanks again, great work.

Another "Hautmann"-car!
Gr Jeroen
Do you have a list of those somewhere, Jeroen?
You previously posted the list below ----- and we have found at least two of these so far (#3374 and #4587)---- but these are the US spec 320i's, correct? The car above would not be on that list, since it is a 323i.
My friend, Afonso (Baur #48 320/6 here in CT) also has a Canadian Baur that was later brought to the US.
Is there a list of all the Baurs brought to Canada by Hautmann or anyone else?
BTW..... I posted this back in October while you were on hiatus (page 17 of this thread, post #402):
Here is another dilemma: Eric B. (LA) reports his car is a 1982 323i Baur #3374. It looks like Baur # 3374 was indeed imported to Santa Monica, CA (according to the chart above from Jeroen). however it is listed as a 320i, US spec.
Any thoughts/info on that?
Thanks in advance.

I'm selling my BMW 318i TC BAUR. It has been my favorite car but it's time to part from it. This car handles great and just a clean ride. The body kit is currently off of the car rite now because I was going to redo it but I ran out of time and money. It has a DTM carbon fiber trunk and 5 spoke ESM rims. It is very clean but does have a door ding on the driver side. In the interior it has matching momo race seats and a pioneer head unit with iPod hook up. It also has fairly new rear seats that match the momo seats. I love this car and I hate to let it go but it needs an owner that has more time for it. Just make me an offer but don't lo-ball me this car was imported and is US certified. Don't be shy on the offers. Please email me, call or text me at 661-733-67zero1

Hey Tom, sorry I haven't checked in in a while, but did you ever hear anything back from the folks at ASC about my ASC-converted Baur??
Thx, Bret.
Bret,
I haven't heard anything since we last communicated. If you recall, I had contacted a fella in Michigan, working for ASC, who had then contacted an elderly retiree from ASC who did recall the ASC shop in Hempstead LI. I haven't been able to contact the retiree directly.
I also contacted a guy at Park Blvd BMW in NJ, the dealer who imported your car, and probably arranged for ASC to convert it. He had no direct first hand info, however, and suggested I contact the company owner, who was also the owner at the time your car came in. I have not done that yet. Life intervenes.
I don't know if you saw this.... but I recently did an 8-part pictorial on the restoration of the first Baur (Baur plate #000001) by Andreas T., in Belgium on my blog. This link is Part VIII, which summarizes what has gone before.
http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/2011/11/first-baur-restoration-project_23.html
I am thinking of trying to do a similar story on other Baurs, especially Baurs of some historic significance, like yours appears to be. I would need to engage with ASC and park Blvd people to accomplish this, and I think they may have interest in helping out, perhaps.
(Your ASC plate and the plate of Baur #000001 (attached) have a certain common feature, that is of considerable interest.)
What are you doing with your car presently? Are you restoring, or considering restoring it? If I recall correctly, you were also perhaps considering putting it up for sale. Where do you stand on that?
Let me know what your plans are. I do hope to move ahead with this story as time allows, and I will need your assistance to do so. Is this something you would be interested in? Let me know.
