The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial, Part VIII Andreas' Story, In German

The story of how Andreas T. of Belgium came to own both Baur #000001 and Baur #4595, ( the very first and the very last E21 Baurs built) in both English and the original German, with many pics.

    Enjoy!

Many thanks to Andreas for sharing his story with us, and to my nephew, Brendan, for translating the original German text into English!

"The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial, Part VIII Andreas' Story, In German and English" is now posted!

    Introducing Andreas T. of Belgium

Andreas T. is the owner and restorer of Baur #000001, the first Baur, and he is also the owner of Baur #4595, the last Baur built. He has graciously consented to allow me to post his pic here.

4 Cars in 1: The BMW Baur

You may recall that in the late 1970's, there was much discussion about outlawing convertibles as unsafe, and most manufacturers, anticipating the convertible's demise, stopped their production. The last American convertible in that era, for example, was the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado. BMW contracted with coachbuilder Baur to produce a limited number of cabriolet-style cars to meet the demands of its customer base without going into full-scale tooling and production. The design of the BMW Baur reflected the safety concerns of the time, and that is why you see the built-in roll bar in the roof. While for some that detracts from the clean top-down looks of a traditional convertible, it also allows a unique versatility of roof configurations that no traditional convertible can match. The advertisement below is for a TC2, but the same features are available on the E21 TC1.

This advertisement touts the unique features of the Baur, calling it 4 cars in 1, a reference to the 4 different possible configurations of the roof: the Coupe, the Targa, the Landaulet, and the Cabriolet. Each configuration is shown at the bottom of the ad, from left to right.

    TITLE IN HAND

Old car but a good one. New engine put in 4yrs ago and has low miles on it. Has a BAUR top, rear folds down and top pops off.
Needs the rear vinyl window re stiched or replaced. Someone might consider this to be a classic collectable car.5 speed, dual exhaust,6 cylinder, Lots of miles on the body but not the engine. Has a lot of potential to be a really nice car again. Runs great and is dependable just needs some work to be perfect. Needs tires eventually. BBS wheels
COLD AC isn't something you see everyday on a classic like this.
    Again practically new engine.

    The Hits Keep Coming!

I got an email a few days ago from Zoilo in Lakewood CA who tells me there are TWO Baurs there!
One is #1518, an E21 TC1, and he just bought it.
The owner of the shop where he bought it has another Baur.... this one is an E30 TC2 #40954.

I have a pic of the TC1 Baur plate, but I can't seem to load the other pics, for some reason.

The pics are on my blog here:

    Hi Tom,

Was really surprised to see that TC2-Poster here. First I thought it was my own, but then, mine isn't framed with wood but aluminium. Some searching: this one was photographed at the Baur-factory in 2002.

When I bought my poster earlier this year, it was the first time that I saw this poster! Markus Freitag from Baur TC IG also had a poster, of the TC1.

This year, we made some reproductions of these. But only a handfull and I don't believe there are some left.

    Jeroen,

I love that poster... and I would love to get a copy of the TC1 version!

Also, I got an email from Uwe H. yesterday who is the webmaster for this site:
    http://bmwe21baur.npage.de

Check out the TC1 Register on that site .... I see a lot of pics of TC1 Baurs that originated from this thread or my blog! I like the way he did a single continuous page showing Baur #1 all the way to Baur #4595.
So, Baurhunters, we are making progress, and I really appreciate all the contributions you guys have made!

There has been a flurry of activity with US Baurs lately, and, with the Holiday, I am a little behind in keeping up with the tally. I believe we are now at about 60 (or more) confirmed Baur TC1s in the US! Plus about 30 + unconfirmed reports that we are still working on. So we are nowhere near done!

    Stay tuned!

    Good man, Vance! Thank you!

We got a tip on that one from E30 bimmerforums member boardM13 last weekend, and we have it posted in post #445 above. Thanks for the reminder, though. With all the Holiday hustle and bustle, and the little flurry of Baurs popping up this month, I have fallen a little behind with getting them all listed and located.

I am grateful to all the eyes and ears out there spotting these Baurs!

    Tidings of the Season

Although it is now a week after our American Thanksgiving holiday, I hope it is not too late for me to express my humble and grateful thanks to the thousands of folks in bimmerforums and around the world who help to make the BAURSPOTTING blog possible by their interest in, and enthusiasm for, these wonderful cars. This is truly a labor of love for me, and I hope you continue to enjoy reading it, sharing input, and Baurhunting as much as I enjoy writing it.

Best Wishes for the Holiday Season, in whatever context you celebrate it! Thank you all. --- Tom

N.B. The amount of interest in this little niche market of BMW Baurs is simply amazing to me. As of this date, BAURSPOTTING is read in 99 countries around the world. Who da thought??!! Of course, I remind myself that this may only mean that we have found the 1 guy in 99 different countries with too much time on his hands! To see a list of those 99 countries, (speaking of guys with too much time on their hands.... ) I just posted it...

    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/

Moldova? The Island of Reunion? (The Baur really is a perfect island car, IMHO, btw. Reminds me of the surrey-top taxis on Capri, or in the Caribbean.)

Coming In From The Cold! Again!

Congrats to Baurhunter of the Week: Toyotech!

We have been hearing about a Baur in Tempe for about a year now, and today he nailed it! He posted this pic in Facebook E21 Legion a little while ago, and it appears to be a new find, in that it isnt on the International Baur Registry yet!

    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/

    Kudos Toyotech!

Stay tuned, more info from Toyotech on the way!

    Tempe Baur

Like just about all of us, I'm constantly keeping an eye out for E21s and when I saw a Baur parked down the street from my sister-in-law's house a while back, I was doubly excited. Not only was it an E21, but a rare one to boot. I would make it a point to drive past the house whenever we venture over to visit my wife's younger sister in hopes of getting a chance to meet the owner. As we drove past the house today, opportunity finally came knocking and parked in the driveway, still damp from it's recent bath it sat.

Number 3426 was originally a Canadian car, but spent most of its life in Colorado and then came to Arizona 3 years ago when the current owner inherited it from his brother when he passed. Registering was apparently quite the adventure given its grey market roots.

I informed the owner of Tom's blog and of our special little corner of BF.C that is the E21 section. I'll be sending him an e-mail with links to both shortly and will likely have future updates as he's in the market for a mechanic that knows how to work on it and I just happen to know one.

    Another one bites the dust!

    Thanks again, great work.

    Tomscat,
I am amused that a guy in Connecticut is responsible for connecting two guys that are practically in the same neighborhood, perhaps 2-3 miles away. Mark and I met this morning and had some good conversation about our cars. He's a very decent, knowledgeable and capable person. I'm glad to know him. Much appreciation for connecting us through your PM's.

    WHOA!

I'll be Damned! This is just amazing. My quote above is from page 5 post #110 of this thread, from January 2011. Your quote from the previous post is from December 4 2010 (post #24 in this thread page 1). The link at the very top is a post from 'sisith' in 2008.

If I understand you correctly, the Mark R that you just met with the Baur in Scottsdale, is THE SAME Mark that jimjim mentions in his thread last December... the guy that bought the $300 Baur in Tucson!!! And that is the same car that sisith mentions in 2008.

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing we have been talking about all along: several separate reports of Baurs from separate sources at separate times..... turn out to be the SAME CAR! Baur #118. Incredible.

Wow. It took us 10 months, with help from jimjim, docjohn, bimmerforums member sisith and, of course, Mark R himself.... but we frickin' NAILED IT! What a great story! Great job, fellas, and thanks for all of your help!!!

And, docjohn, I agree that it is just too funny how this worked out to get you two virtual neighbors hooked up like this! We are working hard here at Baurspotting, and this kind of stuff is just what we hope for! And don't forget.... toyotech has seen another Baur in Tempe. If there is some way to get your three Baurs in the same pic..... you will have recorded the largest convocation of E21 Baurs in the US this year! In MANY years, perhaps! Who da thought that could happen in Arizona!!??

The attached pic is from jimjim's January 2010 post in this thread.
UPDATE: some more info from jimjim back in January 2011:
    tomscat1
"I help you . Yes it was federalized once owed by dan kenny ?
    engine 2.0 320/6, 4 speed
    James"
"I had his name miss spelled
    It's {dan Kennedy} sorry"
"Is Dan Kennedy your friend who just bought it for $300?

NO just the last name on title 2007 date
MY buddy that bought is a BMW E21 guy BUT NOT IN TO THE FORUMS AT ALL !!!
    James"

    ________________________________________________

Thank you again jimjim for that info. So we know that Dan Kennedy owned it in 2007; bimmerforums member "sisith" sold it to Mark R. Unless 'sisith' is also Dan Kennedy, it appears we have the past three owners of Baur 118 going back to 2007. Great stuff!
In conjunction with Toyotech's great find yesterday, I thought I would ad this post on the TWO other Baurs in that area: docjohn and MarkR!
that makes Three Baurs in the Tempe/Scottsdale area!!!

Do you have a list of those somewhere, Jeroen?

You previously posted the list below ----- and we have found at least two of these so far (#3374 and #4587)---- but these are the US spec 320i's, correct? The car above would not be on that list, since it is a 323i.

My friend, Afonso (Baur #48 320/6 here in CT) also has a Canadian Baur that was later brought to the US.

Is there a list of all the Baurs brought to Canada by Hautmann or anyone else?

BTW..... I posted this back in October while you were on hiatus (page 17 of this thread, post #402):
Here is another dilemma: Eric B. (LA) reports his car is a 1982 323i Baur #3374. It looks like Baur # 3374 was indeed imported to Santa Monica, CA (according to the chart above from Jeroen). however it is listed as a 320i, US spec.

    Any thoughts/info on that?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm selling my BMW 318i TC BAUR. It has been my favorite car but it's time to part from it. This car handles great and just a clean ride. The body kit is currently off of the car rite now because I was going to redo it but I ran out of time and money. It has a DTM carbon fiber trunk and 5 spoke ESM rims. It is very clean but does have a door ding on the driver side. In the interior it has matching momo race seats and a pioneer head unit with iPod hook up. It also has fairly new rear seats that match the momo seats. I love this car and I hate to let it go but it needs an owner that has more time for it. Just make me an offer but don't lo-ball me this car was imported and is US certified. Don't be shy on the offers. Please email me, call or text me at 661-733-67zero1

Hey Tom, sorry I haven't checked in in a while, but did you ever hear anything back from the folks at ASC about my ASC-converted Baur??

    Thx, Bret.

    Bret,

I haven't heard anything since we last communicated. If you recall, I had contacted a fella in Michigan, working for ASC, who had then contacted an elderly retiree from ASC who did recall the ASC shop in Hempstead LI. I haven't been able to contact the retiree directly.
I also contacted a guy at Park Blvd BMW in NJ, the dealer who imported your car, and probably arranged for ASC to convert it. He had no direct first hand info, however, and suggested I contact the company owner, who was also the owner at the time your car came in. I have not done that yet. Life intervenes.

I don't know if you saw this.... but I recently did an 8-part pictorial on the restoration of the first Baur (Baur plate #000001) by Andreas T., in Belgium on my blog. This link is Part VIII, which summarizes what has gone before.
    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/2011/11/first-baur-restoration-project_23.html

I am thinking of trying to do a similar story on other Baurs, especially Baurs of some historic significance, like yours appears to be. I would need to engage with ASC and park Blvd people to accomplish this, and I think they may have interest in helping out, perhaps.

(Your ASC plate and the plate of Baur #000001 (attached) have a certain common feature, that is of considerable interest.)

What are you doing with your car presently? Are you restoring, or considering restoring it? If I recall correctly, you were also perhaps considering putting it up for sale. Where do you stand on that?

Let me know what your plans are. I do hope to move ahead with this story as time allows, and I will need your assistance to do so. Is this something you would be interested in? Let me know.

I received an email tonight from Ryne in Texas, who has purchased the gold Baur from Shady Hills Fl:

The Baur plate is attached: #4486. This Baur is NOT listed in the International Baur Registry, so it qualifies as a NEW FIND! Congrats to Ryne and we look forward to hearing more about it!

Ryne mentioned that he first learned about this Baur here:
    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/p/baurs-for-sale.html

Ryne, (1rdmanahan1) you may recall, already owns this Baur:
