This is jimjim's post on page 1 of this thread about that car his friend bought in Tucson. There are several pics of the car somewhere in the thread also.

If memory serves, jimjim posted something a while back about moving to Chicago for work.... Not sure if it was just for the summer, or what. He sold off some parts and stuff. I don't know what his status or location is at present, unfortunately. Perhaps someone else here does.

    Keep the faith:

I am presently working on a complete listing of .... everything we know to date about all the US E21 Baurs. It is a long slog.

    Soon come, mon!

BAUR TC1s IN THE US : INTERIM STATUS REPORT

There is now a link on my blog to a spreadsheet of what we have gathered so far in our effort to identify and locate every Baur TC1 in the United States at this time. Please consider that it is not yet complete. It is an interim report, and the information is still coming in. It is divided into sections:
    1) Known Baur Numbers;
    2) Known Baur Numbers, Unfound Baurs;
    3) Known Baurs, Unknown Baur Numbers;
    4) Unknown Baur Numbers, Unconfirmed Reports.

I have further added a column for known locations and, if unknown, last reported location; whether the Baur is a previously known Baur, or a new discovery; and whether it is listed on the International Baur Registry (Stephan) and Jeroen's original list of 33 US Baurs (from Baur TC1 in the US Thread in bimmerforums). Jeroen also provided a listing of 25 Baurs that were documented as going to Canada (mainly), and the US. Any cars appearing on that list are also noted (one).

If I have done the math correctly, we have located 22 of Jeroen's original list of 33 US Baurs; 11 remain 'at-large'. We have also added 13 previously unknown US Baurs. We have 13 more Baurs that have been sight/photographed, but we have no Baur numbers for yet. And we have 30 more Baurs that have been reported, or rumored about, that we have little or no information on. Some of those 30 reports could be the missing 11, duplications of some we have previously identified, or completely new and undiscovered Baurs. In addition to the above, there are no doubt other Baurs that we have not come across at all yet, sitting in barns or garages somewhere.

Preliminarily, it appears that we can say that there are at least 35 E21 Baurs in the US, probably at least 48. We cannot say with any certainty how many of the missing 11, or the 30 unconfirmed reports, are existing Baurs. There is a good chance that at least some of them exist. Further investigation is required to say for sure. The number could increase, if they all pan out, to 89 Baurs. Add to this number however many are, as yet, totally undiscovered. Jeroen's list of 25 that were largely destined for Canada, but some of which came to the US, could also increase the numbers.

That gives an approximate range of at least 35 and possibly as many as 125 TC1 Baurs in the US.

This turned out to be a fairly complicated task, and I apologize for any errors in advance, as I am sure there are omissions and errors. I wanted to get this out, and I will continue to update it as more information is received.

I do wish to express my profound gratitude to the numerous members who have contributed to this compilation, and I hope I have at least begun to do justice to your contributions. This has been a long time coming, and we are not nearly done.

Damn the torpedoes! Full steam/speed ahead!

    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/201...us-report.html

    UPDATE:
I have been contacted this evening by Milton A., of California, who saw the spreadsheet, and confirms that he is the owner of Baur #4369, which is incorrectly listed by me as #4389 (also incorrectly listed on the International Baur Registry).
I have corrected the spreadsheet info.

4369 is one of Jeroen's original 33 US Baurs shown at the beginning of this thread (page 1), and it was also one that we found in an old ad (2007) from Old Town Classics of San Diego. Which is exactly where Milton bought this car! It is a 5 speed with only 39,000 original miles!

Thank you for responding, Milton, and welcome to the forum!

Baur TC1 in the US Spreadsheet

I tried to post the spreadsheet in here... no way: it is way too large, and this forum can't handle the format, etc.

    So here is the link:
    https://spreadsheets.google.com/spre...S&pli=1#gid=0e

It continues to be a work in progress.

    Old Thread: Poor Baur

Anyone recall the Baur that was the subject of this thread, started by Layne and commented on by other members here? It sounds as though it had an interesting engine.

There is a reference to it being in "NE"? Is that Nebraska, New England, or the North Eastern US?
    http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1058088

Could it have been this Hartge Baur in post 7 of this thread? There was another Hartge Baur in Nebraska a few years ago, similar wine-red color, but with a white roof. In the thread I saw, the former owner was lamenting selling it, and wished he had it back.
    http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...highlight=Baur

Any of this look familiar to anyone? Both of the Baurs above are E30s, btw, so if the original subject car is an E21 we may be talking 3 separate Baurs.

Any info at all is helpful, no matter how vague or insignificant it may seem.

    E30 Baur TC2 M3

This is a conversion done by a guy in Dallas, Texas. Thanks to e30man88 of the E30 forum for this post.

Although there were considerably more TC2 Baurs (E30) produced than TC1 Baurs (E21), they seem to be in quite short supply around bimmerforums. Here is the thread from the E30 forum, for those who may be interested:
    http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1691140

I am adding a Google map of the E30 Baurs, separate from that of the E21 Baurs, FWIW, to help keep track of them... unless it just gets too unwieldy. Perhaps we can persuade a few of our E30 cousin TC2 Baurs to come to Bimmerfest East!

Here is a guy I hope to see at Bimmerfest East this weekend. This show is practically in his backyard, so ... if he can drive this car to Saratoga, NY, I am thinking he will show at Aberdeen, MD. That is a Baur, by the way.

Lothar Schuettler, center, stands near his 1956 BMW 502 convertible after driving it from his home in Bethesda, Maryland to the Saratoga Automobile Museum for this weekend's Saratoga Spring Invitational auto show. Schuettler's is one of about 10 remaining of the original 54 vehicles manufactured. Powering the vehicle was a V8 engine which was highly unusual at the time in Europe because of petrol costs. "When I was growing up in Germany most of the people driving cars like this were doctors or dentists" said Schuettler who also trailered a 1937 BMW 328S Roadster to the show. I saw both the 502 and the 328 at last year's V@the V, and they are spectacular.

On a SOT (or maybe WOT) note, check out these "Baur-ish" Renault 5's, built by a company called Sovr LM in France:

    Inspired by Baur BMW's, maybe?

    Found them here:

Thanks for that post , Harry.

I am a little preoccupied with Bimmerfest at the moment, and I will be doing some direct posts to my blog from Bimmerfest East. First posts are up tonight... A small accident enroute by caravan on the New Jersey Turnpike. No injuries, thank goodness.

    Stay safe, fellas.

We are still in PA, and we had a great visit with Scott (msbehmane36) and son Michael. I still can't post pics here from the iPad, so I have a few posted in my blog. They have a project Baur they are working on, and we look forward to seeing their progress. Congrats to Michael on his new job today! Michael has now driven more Baurs than I have, since I let him take mine for a spin!
If you are in the Gettysburg area, I highly recommend a spirited drive thru the Michaux Forest, preferably with the top down, like we did tonight! Wow. Watch out for the deer, however. Trust me on that. I hope to have some video on that, taken by Brian, my trusty navigator, riding shotgun.

    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NQRGAm8V6w...oto-775863.JPG.
I will give this a shot. Not sure this link will work.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwo3ngDkU3A[/ame]

My son, Brian, and I just arrived home at last from our Grand Bimmerfest/Civil War Battlefield/Baurquest Tour. We made it successfully to Bimmerfest, had a great time meeting all the Legion members, and others; spent two days in Washington DC, giving my son the tomscat1 Reality Tour of my college days there in the late 60's; Toured Antietam National Battlefield, Harpers Ferry National Park, Gettysburg National Battlefield; and visited Three(!) other E21 Baurs: we visitied with Scott and Michael B in Newville PA, with their project baur #3683; visited the Bullenstall Museum in Mechanicsburg PA, and saw Baur #1282 owned by Ed Ullom; and we had a delightful visit with Lawrence Charlemagne this afternoon, owner of Baur #872 in Wappinger's Falls, NY. Happy Birthday, Lawrence!

During our trip, we visited CT, NY, NJ, DE, MD, Wash DC, VA, WV, PA, and back thru NY to CT again..... driving our 1982 BMW 323i Baur. What a car!

I wish I could say how many miles we covered, but the odometer is stuck at 242,000, and no one knows how long ago it broke... somewhere between 2003 and 2010. At a minimum, we covered 850 miles on this trip, although the true total is probably closer to 1000.

Fantastic trip, highly recommended. No car problems. Zero, zip, nada. A testament to BMW build quality!

I am exhausted, but I will be posting pics of all of the above as soon as I can get to it.

Check my blog for updates, including pics of the other Baurs:

I don't know, but you are probably right. We know that the American Sunroof Company (ASC) did some BMW conversions under license from Baur (rigmaster has one example in NC, #001). ASC also did work for other car makers, including GM. There is a Mid-80s GM (Pontiac, Olds or Buick) in my neighborhood somewhere.... I have seen it drive by, but haven't tracked it down. It has the same hardtop/cabriolet roof as this one, and similar to the Baur.

If you recall from some other discussions about this, safety was a major concern at the time. There was a lot of talk about convertibles being outlawed for safety reasons, specifically the rollover concern. They never were actually outlawed in the US, but this design pictured here, and Baur's design, as well, address the safety rollover issue directly: they have a built-in roll bar! Brilliant!

I am continually updating my blog with pics of Bimmerfest East, The Roaming Baur touring some familiar Civil War sites, as well as various pics from our very successful Baurquest on the return trip. Please check it out.

We were able to make contact with three other E21 Baurs on the way home, which, taken together with our meeting with Afonso and his Baur in CT last month, means that The Roaming Baur from Baurspotting has now met a total of four other US Baurs! Five including ourselves. That is a good start!! But we are not nearly done yet!!

Baurquest I: msbehmane36's Project Baur in PA

I am slowly getting some of the pics, videos and stories together from the recent 900 mile "Bimmerfest, Battlefields and Baurs Tour" that I took with my son, Brian, August 5-10, 2011. It is too big to post in here, but if you are interested in seeing some pics of some of what we saw, I have posted an installment on msbehmane36's Baur restoration/rebuild project on my blog:
    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/

Took this little video along the way:

You may recall that this car was discussed much earlier in this thread, and it kept popping up in ads going way back. Here is what it looks like now, so you can see they still have a ways to go:

That is Scott's son Michael talking to my son, Brian (in the baseball hat). August 9, 2011.

    Baur on the beach!

Hey Tom me and Brian (BFlan2001) are seriously thinking on driving up to fort brags in couple of weekends. I have not followed any of your treads regard it so i don't know whats going on. So what is the deal? Do you still need someone to go and check it out?

    Yes!

Here is a little background on the search for that car, I will post more later---- I am at work at the moment.

There is also info earlier in this thread, as well as on my blog:
    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/201...-at-beach.html

Any help is greatly appreciated. We would love to add this to our list of 'found and identified' Baurs. It may even be salvageable.... for parts if nothing else.

Two posts of pics from the Bullenstall Museum are up in my blog: one post is non-Baur cars, including Ed Ullom's turbo E21 race car; the other post is the Bullenstall Baur. Great little place to visit next time you are in the Carlisle, PA area.

    Baur for Sale in CA

Many thanks to Tom D. For the heads up on this TC2 just sold on eBay. 6 grand, not too bad.

    http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?campid=5335818596&toolid=10001&mpre=http%3A%2F%2 Fcgi.ebay.com%2Febaymotors%2F1984-BMW-323i-E30-BAUR-TC2-CABRIOLET-RARE-EURO-VERSION-%2F270803738293%3Fpt%3DUS_Cars_Trucks%26amp%3Bhash %3Ditem3f0d291eb5

If the link doesn't work it is also on my Baurs for sale page in my blog, for those interested. It is a beauty, if ya like that sorta thing.

    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/p/baurs-for-sale.html

Be sure to check out the BMW Classic Center ad in the auction that features a TC2 Baur!
    I posted it here also:
    http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/

Here is another Baur from rudy92 , another TC2 on craigslist in the LA area.

    http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...561958822.html

    Whoa.... Rudy sent me TWO!

    http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...568032003.html

    Thanks Rudy !

The TC2 Baurs seem to keep themselves fairly well hid. They should, theoretically, be much more common than the TC1, since more than twice as many were produced. However, they don't seem to show up all that often.

Thanks to conkitchen, here is a new craigslist ad for a California Baur:

    http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/2588395730.html

    Asking $10,000.

    Check it out.

Thank you, conkitchen, for the heads up! It remains to be seen if this is a new find. I will try to contact the seller to determine the Baur number!
