Hi Bill,
The plot thickens. I'll be curious to know more about that car. I added your note to the Ireland Engineering pin on the Baur map.
I have #72910 credited to you both on Page 3 of this thread, and also on the Baurs in the US Google map. I also hope to do a small feature on my new blog, BAURSPOTTING, on each car we have identified. Soon come.

You may notice on the map that there is, or was, another Baur up your way in Buffalo, MN a couple of years ago. Keep a sharp eye out.... it may still be around, you never know!
Thanks again.

It was for sale a few years ago. If memory serves it was on ebay and was black in color. I spoke with the owner and it sounded like it was a decent car but needed some TLC.

I may have a lead on that one... I may have found the guy who posted the ad I saw from 2007. Not sure where the car is yet, though. Stay tuned. Perhaps we can help arrange a Convocation of Minnesota Baurs: BOTH of them!!
Reminds me of that old story that, supposedly, in 1905 there were only two cars registered in the whole State of Missouri.... and they had an accident in downtown St. Louis!

I am a little confused. I originally thought that you bought #73583. Then, on 12/10/2010 4:18pm, this post appeared:
"My son currently owns picture number 73860. We are doing a complete resto on it. Unfortunatly, when we pulled the motor out to clean up the bay, someone had installed a325es motor. So we are changing it to a 325 is motor.
Love the baurs!"
That post is still on page 2 of this thread. So I changed you to ownership of 73860 and I changed the caption on the pic of the car to reflect this. Member "ASC off" stated he had 73583 in his shop for a short time, and that is the caption on that car.
Your post today, then, confuses me. Please clarify this for me, so I can make those changes, and put this right. Was the 12/10 post a typo, or am I missing something here? Do you own BOTH of them???
Help!!!
BAUR/American Sunroof Company
I love this story, and can't wait to get to the bottom of it!
I sent this PM to Bret (rigmaster) tonight:
Hi Bret,
I got this email answer from the guy at ASC tonight:
"I talked to the retirees. They remember things about like you do. They think this car was made by a licensee in Hempstead NY. Only one person still alive went there and only for a day. They did conversions just like we did in Southgate. Good luck finding out more about the car. "
Not tremendously helpful, but no BAD news, and not a dead end.
1) it did kind of confirm what we suspected, that Baur subcontracted to some American licensees;
2) One guy went there. So it did, in fact, exist... and "They did conversions just like we did in Southgate."
Boy would I love to talk to that guy!!!
I responded to him with that question....most respectfully... is there a way to talk/write/email etc that guy who had been to the Hempstead site? I will let you know what answer I get.
I am also pursuing another line of attack on this... thru the dealership that sold the car originally.
I know it is a pre-1981 car... so Carfax doesn't help here, correct? Or am I wrong on that?
Did you locate any other info in your old paperwork on the car. ANYTHING would/could be helpful. This is a fascinating subject.
In the meantime: don't lose that car!!!! I think it is a special one, with a fascinating story to tell.

Hey tom. No those pics you found are of my car 3583. Those pics must be from a previous owner. If those pics are from 2006 the car really went downhill in the past couple years before i picked it up. I bought it in Hanover PA last April. I dont know how he got it, Id be interested to know how and when it got from NJ to PA. In those pics you can see a red sticker where PA's inspection sticker usually is. It is a NJ rejected inspection sticker which is still on it, so it wasnt roadworthy then. And i dont know about "the little garage" sticker on it, I know that they are from NY state, maybe they have records of my car from when it may have been worked on there!
But no its one car, I mean there arent any baur plate pics but i recognize the dents and scrapes from these pics, and the import sticker in one of the pics on there has the VIN. Nice find, maybe you can find some other owner history for me
seriously two teal baurs? I think one is bad enough
So was this quote (on page 2 of this thread) a typo about Baur #73860?
"My son currently owns picture number 73860. We are doing a complete resto on it. Unfortunatly, when we pulled the motor out to clean up the bay, someone had installed a325es motor. So we are changing it to a 325 is motor.

Ah okay yeah its a typo. My dad put the baur number for the car below mine (the blue one) not mine. Mine is 73583. Ill have to call them up and see if they have any info on it.
No problem, I am glad we got that sorted out.
Good luck with your call to 'the little garage'. I am sure they will remember it, and you may learn a lot.
You mentioned buying it from Hanover PA. Did you buy the car from forum member "ASC Off" who noted that he had the car in his garage for a time. I think Jeroen's pic of the car may be from his garage. I remember seeing it for sale, and I want to say that he had another E21 for sale at about the same time... hennarot color, if memory serves.
What was the original color of your car? Was it.... teal??

It used to be opel grun and then it was painted maroon twice, in Germany i would guess by the attention to detail. Then that teal was applied in Jersey id guess again because of the lack of attention to detail. Out of all those colors i dont want it any of them, im still undecided on what its gonna be next.
I called the little garage and spoke to matthew the current owner, he didnt remember a teal one but gave me some leeds. Have some more calls to make now
Oh and i dont think the guy i purchaced it from knows how to type let alone know how to use a computer at all lol. But he may have purchased it from the forum member. All i know is im happy others neglected it cuz if it wouldve been pristine it wouldnt be mine
Well, if you need any help in choosing a BMW color.....

The Baurhunter.... new feature added to the sidebar in the Baurspotting blog.
http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/
I plan to use it to post info on Baurs that have been seen or reported, but are not yet identified, located or registered in the Baur Registry. They will also appear on the Baur Google map, and we have reports from all across the country. Any help from fellow E21 owners and Baurhunters is greatly appreciated... and we will gratefully acknowledge all contributions to the cause!

Also, a link to a short video of a E21 323i Baur vs E30 323i drag race. I am not gonna say who won but.... it has a Happy Ending!

I am not sure exactly what it is, but I find something about this photo.... very appealing. An M1 juxtaposed with an E21 Baur. Nice.

Thanks for the tip,.... I think it is definitely worth the trip to see the Museum anyway.
"the US bumper "upgrades".... do you mean those black protrusions in front with the amber lights in them? Ugly. Not that I would kick it out of my garage over that, or anything.
Any idea how much it sold for?

I have been contacted about what appears to be a new Baur discovery...1982 323i Baur in New Mexico, currently undergoing a 2.7 stroker transplant, apparently! That is the first Baur that we have learned of in New Mexico. I am hoping to have some more specific information on the car from the owner, Paul, and I have invited him to join us.
Stay tuned.

keep up the good work.
I keep loking for them up here, no luck so far. I haven't even seen my baur since last day of movie shooting at the end of October since it went right to storage after the last day they needed it. I'll see it again in April..sigh.
Next year I'll get to store it at home since the new house has room and a second garage.
The Frozen Baur (AKA The Frozen Ground) now on Netflix (John Cussack is driving the Omega behind the Baur)
Thanks, Jeff, it is a lot of fun really.
And keep your chin up... April is just around the corner. It hit 50+ degrees here the other day, and rumor has it that it may do so again tomorrow. We are actually starting to see some grass in between the mountains of melting snow! A harbinger of spring!
Speaking of harbingers of things to come... you and your Baur are high on my list to feature in the "Baurspotting" blog soon.... I personally think your story belongs in National Geographic, but, since I don't have any control over that magazine/channel, I will just do what I can with what I have.
also ... new google map on Baurspotting ..... in response to a Global interest in Baurs... send me you Baur info and it will go on the map regardless of where you are located on the planet. All welcome!

Hi Tom,
Don't know if it was previously mentioned, but Stefan over at the German TC1 group also has good info which can be useful:

Yes, thanks, Harry. I use that site all the time, and I have it linked on the Baurspotting blog as: International Baur Registry. I think Jeroen started that site, and then turned it over to Stefan et al a year or so ago, if I am not mistaken. It's great.... I use the English version of the site, btw. My German is not that good.
