this was posted in the http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...0#post22745790 thread tonight:

"i can tell you there are at least 2 other e21 baurs in NE. One is a 79 that I owned until 2005, the other is (I think) an 82. Both are owned by a guy in Concord Massachusetts. I have the feeling he's not on these Boards, but he is an enthusiastic driver! He is restoring the 82 and unfortunately the 79, having now been through 3 owners since me, as become a bit of a beater....sadly. Still it is/was a nice color combo 320/6 of silver with blue/purple interior. sigh!

tcm326 (boston)"

Wow. Great news.... maybe some new Baur finds!
This is the other thread.... but it really belongs here, in this thread.

We look forward to learning some more about this exciting new find!

Two 2002 Baurs: a blue one on ebay and a white Baur in Philly

While surfing Bring a Trailer, I came across a post from last June showing the blue 2002 Baur below, which was for sale on ebay at the time (from Marietta, GA. It eventually sold for $18301, btw.)
In the comments below the pic (attached below) I saw mention of another Baur that had been seen parked on the street in Philly. Sure enough, someone then posted that they knew the car and the owner!
Incidentally, our own fellow Baur owner, HarryPR, the ubiquitous HarryPR, contributes to the comments section. This guy is EVERYWHERE!

So, just for the heck of it, I checked the referenced location (a few blocks north of Fairmount Ave in the Northern Liberties section of Philly--- an area I happen to be familiar with, btw), and what do you know? If you go to google maps, search for "714 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA."..... Voila! There it is! A white 2002 Baur with a black roof and a rear spoiler, parked right there on the street!
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=...ed=0CBMQ8gEwAA

This reminds me of The Adventure of the Baur in the Brush last spring, in which the indefatigable Tom D. located the baur near the beach in northern CA via its latitude and longitude coordinates!

Amazing world!

“There’s a decrepit white Baur that sits on 3rd St. in Philadelphia, a couple blocks north of Fairmount in Northern Liberties.”
That belongs to my old 2002 mechanic, it is parked in front of his house. He has a little shop around the corner on American that might still have an old dump truck parked in front. It took him a long time to find his Baur. Funny, I was thinking about showing him this listing as I read your comment mentioning his car.
If anyone in Philly needs a 2002 mechanic, he is your man.

Check Google Street View Maps…. the white 2002 Baur is parked in front of 714 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia in the pic. It is on the left side of the street going north.
I am amazed to find it exactly where you guys said it would be when you posted those comments last June. And who knows how long ago that pic was taken for Street View maps? Amazing.

This is the text from the ebay listing on the Blue Baur:
1974 BMW 2002 Baur Targa
Brilliant Blue Exterior / Ferrari Leather Black Interior
Exterior Restoration
4 Speeds
1 of 1900 Baur Built Targas

A recipient of a Fresh Exterior Restoration in the brilliant Blue, this 4 Speed Targa is truly a rare find. This 1975 BMW 2002 Baur Targa was part of a limited production run of 1963 units, between 1971 and 1975 by BMW factory authorized Karosserie Baur. They were also responsible for models such as the BMW M1 and Porsche 959. A Removable Targa Top rests above the front passenger compartment, behind it a Soft Cabriolet Top folds back to give the rear passengers a peak at the sun. Power comes from its original and efficient 2 Liter Inline 4 cylinder engine and 4 Speed Manual Transmission that has been regularly serviced and maintained. This Car is imported from Germany the speedo meter is in KM and reads only original 139.000 Kilometer = 85.000 Miles.
The car has Turbo Karosserie with front and back spoiler. Aluminum Rim’s and Recaro sport seat’s retail one Seat 2000 US$.
The Interior is Black leather used by Ferrari.
It breaks my heart but I have to sell this rare unique Car. This Car was driven on the German Autobahn and knows speed. It handles like a sport car and hugs those mountain curves like a Porsche.
If you are a true BMW collector or you just love the 2002 edition this is a must have. These cars are selling up to 40.000 US$. There is no reserve on this car. I hope it will find a good home.
Thank you for looking at this rare German beauty.

Ok. great kudos to Jeroen for posting such great pics! Wow! I count 7 E21s in the pic, 6 E30 TC2s, and 2 E36 TC3s. Just amazing. Thank you, Jeroen!

Now, to put that in its proper perspective: he had 15 Baurs gathered together in those pics.

The largest showing of BMW Baurs in the US in 2011:
it is a tie. There were two E21 Baurs at Bimmerfest in Pasadena,CA in May 20011;

And there were two E21 Baurs at the BMW Connecticut Valley Chapter Show and Shine in Manchester Ct this summer.

There are several Baur owners who own two Baurs, which means they tie for the largest convocation of TC1 Baurs in the US every day in their driveway! We have seen two E21 US Baurs together several times....but in the US we have NOT seen MORE than two together at ANY time!
this is Lawrence Charlemagne and I getting our two Baurs together this summer.
Bullenstall Musem Baur and...my Baur waiting outside.

Not to mention Scott and Mike in PA. Really great guys, really enjoyed the short time we were able to spend with them.

It would be very difficult to compete with Jeroen's feat of having 15 Baurs together at one event. We DO know that there are 48 confirmed TC1 Baurs in the US. There may be 30 or 40 more that we don't know about yet. If we include some room for error, it is likely that there are less than 125 TC1 Baurs in the US. If we can manage to get 3 of them together at one location.... we would have a NEW RECORD!

It does look like we had 3 E30 Baurs and 1 2002 Baur at the Vintage this year.... but NO E21s!!!

So what does all this mean? How many Baurs can we get together at one event? TC1, TC2 ..... 2002 Baur and E36 Baurs? The Pooleman is bringing his TC2 to the BavAuto show on October 1. I have some conflicts, but I am going to try to join him there. Do we have any other Baurs that can attend this event?

We have recently had some unconfirmed reports of two E21 Baurs in the Boston area. Can we get any other info on those? Or can we get them to show at the Bavauto event next month?

Potential New Baur Find! Pittsburgh PA

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/2623308573.html

http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/p/baurs-for-sale.html

UPDATE 7:00pm:
I spoke to the seller. The car for sale is NOT a Baur. He thought the original pic and the substituted pic were the same car, but they clearly are different cars. He said the original pic came from the previous owner. So this does indeed look like false alarm on the Baur idea, but it is an E21 that is for sale. He also stated it has only 63,000 miles on it, little rust near the trunk/tail lights. FWIW.

UPDATE 5:40 pm:
The seller has now changed the pic in the ad, and it no longer appears to be a Baur. The pic I posted above is taken from his original ad. It is now gone.

Could he take a worse picture than what he posted to replace it? What did he use, a cheap night vision lens? Sheesh.

He appears to have changed it sometime after I called him and left a message about the "BMW Baur" he had pictured for sale. Probably explains why he hasn't called me back, also.

Looks like a false alarm, fellas.

I am curious where he got the pic of the Baur.... I wonder if that is a car we have registered yet?

UPDATED AGAIN 9/30/2011 9:47am:

Seller told me this pic is the same car as in the original pic in the ad. He said the car is NOT a convertible, and it has a sunroof. The car in the original pic is clearly a Baur... you can see the tonneau cover on the trunk lid. So he is either mistaken or deliberately misleading. I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt, in that I dont think he knows very much about BMWs at all: he stated it was a 1982 4 cyl 4 speed. I thought that BMW was putting mostly 5 speeds in these cars by 1982. I dont think he ever checked closely. FWIW.

For $600, it reportedly has 63K on it, very little rust. If the problem is just a simple fuel pump issue.... it may be worth a look despite the above.

Caveat emptor, though.

Found!

YES!

You may (or may not) recall the discussion months ago about a Baur (pictured below) that was found in an old ad on the True Gear Head website.

Here is the ad:
"1978 BMW 323i Baur Convertible – was for sale in True Gear Head: $3500 Rare European-only gray market e21 BMW 3 series Baur conversion. White w/blue interior, 5 speed (non sport), Stahl header, Recaro seats, Alpina gauge cluster, Alpina steering wheel, Alpina Shift Knob, New DieHard Battery, Runs strong, daily driver or ready to restore. NO structural rust (towers, jack points, etc) Just a few spots. Located near downtown Beaufort. "

I have posted this in the sidebar of my blog since about February. I contacted the folks at True Gear Head about the ad, but they had no info on it. We had a rumor that it may have gone to Georgia, but we could never pin that down.

Today, as you may have read in the "Wanted: Crushed or Alive" thread, I received an email from Eric B. in California, who is the guy who bought the car from Beaufort. It currently resides in his shop, and, if I understood his email correctly, he owns ANOTHER Baur also! I need to clarify that with him, since, in my excitement this morning on receiving his email, I kind of overlooked that comment. At the very least, he has another E21, which is possibly a Baur.

I have responded to Eric's email, and I hope to have more info from him to report: car details, Baur plate number, how he learned about us, etc.

This did give me a chuckle this morning, btw, when I was thinking..... who was the more surprised.... Eric when he saw his car posted with this headline:
"The Baurhunter: Have you seen this Baur? Beaufort, SC", complete with a picture of his car.....

.... or me, when I received his email stating he's the owner of the famous Beaufort Baur!!

So stay tuned. More to come.

Made MY day!

This was a post by 'roadburner' on the edmunds site in January 2009. From the context of the conversation, I believe this is a US Baur. No idea where it is, however.

Update: Beaufort Baur and friend

Eric B hs sent me info on his TWO Baurs. In the attached pic, the white Baur on the right is the Beaufort Baur (plate #982, also shown).

The Baur on the left is a 1982 323i that he is restoring, Baur plate #A003374-11.

I believe those Baur numbers are both previously unknown to us! So thank you, Eric!

If my count is correct, that will bring us officially to 50 confirmed E21 TC1 Baurs in the US!
#982 was previously counted among our 'reported but unconfirmed' Baurs.
#3374 was completely unknown to us!

Eric B's Baurs

Eric has very kindly forwarded some more pics of his other Baur (he owns the Beaufort Baur also). He bought it because it was a rust-free example, and it looks like he is doing a nice job of restoring it. He told me:
"I am in the process of restoring my '82 w/ an M20 2.7 Stroker w/ Turbo capable of 27lbs of boost (currently in the paint shop; 'granite silver' w/ all chrome or silver to be blacked out). "

Great project, Eric, and thanks for all the pics!
BAUR TC1s IN THE US : INTERIM STATUS REPORT

There is now a link on my blog to a spreadsheet of what we have gathered so far in our effort to identify and locate every Baur TC1 in the United States at this time. Please consider that it is not yet complete. It is an interim report, and the information is still coming in. It is divided into sections:
1) Known Baur Numbers;
2) Known Baur Numbers, Unfound Baurs;
3) Known Baurs, Unknown Baur Numbers;
4) Unknown Baur Numbers, Unconfirmed Reports.

I have further added a column for known locations and, if unknown, last reported location; whether the Baur is a previously known Baur, or a new discovery; and whether it is listed on the International Baur Registry (Stephan) and Jeroen's original list of 33 US Baurs (from Baur TC1 in the US Thread in bimmerforums). Jeroen also provided a listing of 25 Baurs that were documented as going to Canada (mainly), and the US. Any cars appearing on that list are also noted (one).

If I have done the math correctly, we have located 22 of Jeroen's original list of 33 US Baurs; 11 remain 'at-large'. We have also added 13 previously unknown US Baurs. We have 13 more Baurs that have been sight/photographed, but we have no Baur numbers for yet. And we have 30 more Baurs that have been reported, or rumored about, that we have little or no information on. Some of those 30 reports could be the missing 11, duplications of some we have previously identified, or completely new and undiscovered Baurs. In addition to the above, there are no doubt other Baurs that we have not come across at all yet, sitting in barns or garages somewhere.

Preliminarily, it appears that we can say that there are at least 35 E21 Baurs in the US, probably at least 48. We cannot say with any certainty how many of the missing 11, or the 30 unconfirmed reports, are existing Baurs. There is a good chance that at least some of them exist. Further investigation is required to say for sure. The number could increase, if they all pan out, to 89 Baurs. Add to this number however many are, as yet, totally undiscovered. Jeroen's list of 25 that were largely destined for Canada, but some of which came to the US, could also increase the numbers.

That gives an approximate range of at least 35 and possibly as many as 125 TC1 Baurs in the US.

This turned out to be a fairly complicated task, and I apologize for any errors in advance, as I am sure there are omissions and errors. I wanted to get this out, and I will continue to update it as more information is received.

I do wish to express my profound gratitude to the numerous members who have contributed to this compilation, and I hope I have at least begun to do justice to your contributions. This has been a long time coming, and we are not nearly done.

Damn the torpedoes! Full steam/speed ahead!

QUOTE]

I have made some updates to the Baur Interim Status Report to reflect some of the new information that has come to us.

We now have 43 confirmed Baur TC1s in the US; we have 11 more that we know exist but we haven't confirmed the Baur numbers yet. That makes a total of 54. That is an increase of 6 from our last report in July, 2011.

That number includes 3 baurs that we have moved from other categories: for example, we had no Baur plate number for the Beaufort Baur previously, and we now know the plate number, and that it has been moved to LA from SC.

We now have 28 more unconfirmed reports/rumors of TC1 Baurs. The Baur rumored to be in Scottsdale AZ has now beeen confirmed as Baur #118.

We also still have 11 Baur numbers from Jeroen's original US Baur TC1 list for which we have no information yet. Jeroen's other list of 25 that were largely destined for Canada, but some of which came to the US, are still not accounted for also. Not to mention the undiscovered barn finds that are out there, perhaps!

Baur TC1s in the US summary: we have 43 confirmed; 11 probables; 28 rumored; 11 + 25 unaccounted for; and an unknown number of 'undiscovereds'.

Stay tuned.

Here is the link to the Interim Status Report, located in 'the cloud':
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...hl=en_US#gid=0

Here is the Google map of the Baur TC1s in the US, (still in need of some updating as soon as I can get to it):

Here is the dilemma: Eric B. (LA) reports his car is a 1982 323i Baur #3374. It looks like Baur # 3374 was indeed imported to Santa Monica, CA (according to the chart above from Jeroen). however it is listed as a 320i, US spec.

Hmmm.

Paging Jeroen and Stephan!!

Baurspotting is pleased to announce that we have made some significant progress toward one of our goals. Our stated purpose is to identify and locate all the TC1 Baurs in the US. We continue to work toward that goal, and we have confirmed the identity and location of 43 Baurs. We have strong leads on 11 more, for a total of 54. We continue to work on tracking down about 30 or 40 other reports/rumors of Baurs all over the country.

But the news today is of a slightly different kind of achievement. Thanks to the help of a number of folks out there, we have been able to not only identify and locate Baur #917, but we have also been able to trace its history through 5 owners, going back to at least 2001, supplemented with pictures taken along the way. It is kind of long to post here, so if you are interested, this is where you can find it:

http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/201...-baur-917.html

We have been able to develop some information on a number of other Baurs here over the past 10 months, notably vev's wide body Baur in VA, conkitchen/doc john's Baur in California/Arizona, and msbehmane36's Baur in PA, among others.
http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/2011/03/establishingsome-unofficial-provenance.html

http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/2011/03/followup-on-wide-body-baur-in-va.html

In addition to identifying and locating all the TC1 Baurs in the US, we hope to continue to develop as much history on each car as we can, as you have seen above.

Stay tuned, we are just getting started!

You inspired me to google the importer of my car with a name like the one on my door plate there can be only one....so a quick google tells me she's 59 and lives in florida still. I know my car was imported into Florida and it came to Alaska from Miami. since she has a home based buisness I googled the address and it looks like she's into vettes now....anyway I found a phone number, I may call it tommorow and see what I can find out....Her husband is a PhD and has written a book....and has run for govenor of Florida.

I found the wife(who's name is on my door jam) on facebook (I think) and sent a message. Hopefully soon I will know more or find out it's the wrong person. Her husband did live in Germany in the late 70s so it is feasable this is the right person.

Edit: The Phd Husband got his Masters in Hamburg Germany, which is where my baur was sold new....what are the odds of this not being the right person....getting smaller as I dig into google and the facebook.

Great stuff, Jeff! I love it, and I agree that it probably is the right person! Keep us posted.

I have just received an enthusiastically supportive email from mstecker, the owner of the two Baurs mentioned above that are now located in Concord MA! (#917 and #3091). #3091 is reportedly in near perfect shape, and I do remember seeing pics of that one a year or so ago.... it is a Beauty! He will be sending some pics along to us.

This also means that there are 4 known E21 Baurs in New England, as well as 4 more known E21 Baurs in NY state, with one other rumored to be there... so we have the makings of a potential mini-Baurfest one of these days at some BMW event!!

We also know of a couple of TC2 Baurs in this general area, notably ThePooleman in NH, among others. We are working on trying to flush a few of those out of the bushes also!

It has a been a busy week in Baurspottting, with all the new info coming in from California, Arizona and now Concord MA.

And we are STOKED!

Stay tuned!

Tomscat,

I am amused that a guy in Connecticut is responsible for connecting two guys that are practically in the same neighborhood, perhaps 2-3 miles away. Mark and I met this morning and had some good conversation about our cars. He's a very decent, knowledgeable and capable person. I'm glad to know him. Much appreciation for connecting us through your PM's.

I'll be Damned! This is just amazing. My quote above is from page 5 post #110 of this thread, from January 2011. Your quote from the previous post is from December 4 2010 (post #24 in this thread page 1). The link at the very top is a post from 'sisith' in 2008.

If I understand you correctly, the Mark R that you just met with the Baur in Scottsdale, is THE SAME Mark that jimjim mentions in his thread last December... the guy that bought the $300 Baur in Tucson!!! And that is the same car that sisith mentions in 2008.

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing we have been talking about all along: several separate reports of Baurs from separate sources at separate times..... turn out to be the SAME CAR! Baur #118. Incredible.

Wow. It took us 10 months, with help from jimjim, docjohn, bimmerforums member sisith and, of course, Mark R himself.... but we frickin' NAILED IT! What a great story! Great job, fellas, and thanks for all of your help!!!

And, docjohn, I agree that it is just too funny how this worked out to get you two virtual neighbors hooked up like this! We are working hard here at Baurspotting, and this kind of stuff is just what we hope for! And don't forget.... toyotech has seen another Baur in Tempe. If there is some way to get your three Baurs in the same pic..... you will have recorded the largest convocation of E21 Baurs in the US this year! In MANY years, perhaps! Who da thought that could happen in Arizona!!??

The attached pic is from jimjim's January 2010 post in this thread.

Thank you again jimjim for that info. So we know that Dan Kennedy owned it in 2007; bimmerforums member "sisith" sold it to Mark R. Unless 'sisith' is also Dan Kennedy, it appears we have the past three owners of Baur 118 going back to 2007. Great stuff!

Absolutely!

Here's a link to lone of the threads in the E30 forum about just that:

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1691140

I also have Google map of some of the TC2 Baurs we have located in the sidebar of my blog. This iPad won't let me post it here for some reason, however. The map needs some updating, btw. I will add the one you mention when I get the chance .... Do you happen to have the Baur number?

I have done a couple of posts there on the TC2s. Even though they are theoretically more numerous than the E21s (10,000+ built in Germany, and over 3,000 more in South Africa vs 4595 E21s built) they do not show up very often. There is a 4 door E30 Baur, and 117 325ix Baurs! An all-wheel drive E30 Baur Top Cabriolet!!! Wow!! And Jeroen has TWO of them! The lucky devil!
http://baurspotting.bloodspot.com/

So tell your friend that YES we are definitely interested in his car!

Thanks, Dan!

Thanks, Dan!

He's located in Waterloo, NY (town right next to me) and it's an '84 318i Baur TC2. He bought it from a lady in VA he knows who was an attorney for the US Army, stationed in Germany. She bought the car off her German counterpart who used it to, get this, trailer his show horse around Europe! Wha!?? The car has a factory hitch and electrical hook up for brakes, etc.

She imported it for her father, who unfortunately passed away prior to the car being federalized so the car sat in VA in a friend's garage for 12 years while she completed her service and retired. Then she kept it for several years before driving up to this gentleman's home and selling it to him.

The scary part is that his garage looks a lot like mine and has some of the tools I'm trying to get. What is really scary is that he just mentioned he's building a barn in back to move it all out of the house garage.... hmmm, good idea.

I'll follow up with this in an email to you.
