I contacted Excluservice. They do not have any record of the car. The rep at Excluservice is forwarding my request for information to Mr. Schuettler himself. I also sent an email to Jean-Louis. Thanks for the detective work. I still can't believe I missed the connection between ASU and Excluservice when I reviewed the add previously.
In reference to a Baur in Chattanooga. I'll put a shout out to Brian Scroggins at BMW of Chatt. He's into e28's and knows most of the old BMW's around town.

Thanks, Bill, that is just the kind of eyes and ears we need out there to help track that one down. Please thank your friend, and tell him we have officially deputized him as a Baurhunter, which, when combined with a couple of bucks from his own pocket, should get him a decent cup of coffee almost anywhere in Chattanooga!
Thanks!

That '83 article is really nice! I immediately checked the productionlist, but can only find VOB with TC2's. Since many of "J. Hautmann"'s cars got in the US, it might be that VOB bought them there...? I got a white with blue 323i from Hautmann: 73788.
The story about ASU is also great!
Gr Jeroen
Looks like the car in the 1983 article came to the US through Sunbelt Imports of Houston. Maybe the car is identified with Sunbelt rather than VOB?
I spoke to Lothar Schuettler. His recollection is that the car came to the U.S. with modifications already done, including the widebody. He believes that the body kit is from Hartge. He reviewed the existing records and forwarded the following:
"The car came in to port of Baltimore #1303 on 12/11/85 entry #86164588 2
via transport ship Kaijin Maru
by the Herman Ludwig Inc agency on behalf of Adrea L Brier. later Brier-Coleman
We took possession of it from Adrea Brier-Coleman in 7/18/88 and sold it to
Jean-Louis Evenou on 9/1/88
per his request we installed:
2 BBS 15x7 and 2x15x9 wheels - RS Design
Momo sport steering wheel
Flofit sport seats
New front grills
Four speed manual transmission (not sure why it was replaced and don't know if it was new or reman)
and we repainted the car or parts of the car (again no details on this.)"
The car still has the parts identified in the correspondence except I think it now has a five speed transmission. I am going to ask for copies of the paperwork. Looks like additional answers might reside across the Atlantic.

Paging Jeroen.
Any likely suspects who may have done the modifications over there? Who is this Adrea Brier-Coleman? The Herman Ludwig Agency?
I find this to be a fascinating, valuable and educational experience, and perhaps a textbook example of how to go about tracking down your car's history. Thank you very much, vev, for continuing to share it with us.

Herman Ludwig Inc. is or was a company involved in international shipping--not just for automobiles. I plan to speak to Mr. Schuettler again and have attempted to contact Jean-Louis. I am curious to find out if Jean-Louis located the car in Europe and retained Mr. Schuettler to federalize it or if someone else located the car and brought it to the US before it was sold to Jean-Louis.
It appears to me from what you have there that Adrea Brier-Coleman had the car brought the car to the US in 1985, kept it for 3 years before Mr. Schuettler gained possession of it (sale or trade perhaps) in 1988, and subsequently sold it to Jean-Louis Evenou.
Import date was 1985, when the 1979 model car was 6 years old. I seem to recall ---correct me if I am wrong---- that there were some exceptions to the Federalization requirement: if the car was 5 years old and/or had 50,000 miles on it at the time it was imported... there was some leeway in the Federalization requirement. Lothar S. can probably give the correct info on that, I can't remember where I read that. Some folks waited to import a Euro car in order to take advantage of this loophole.... New cars, as far as I know, had to be Federalized.
Do you know if the widebody Baur was federalized? If it was done, it probably would have happened in 1985, at the time of importation, before Schuettler got it.
My 1982 Baur has a Dietel Enterprises sticker on the passenger wheel well stating they federalized it. (Can't remember the date on that, but I will check it later.)
Update: I found this (vague as it is) on a Porsche website. Can't vouch for its accuracy... but this is along the lines I was thinking.
"Grey market cars that came across in the 80's could be admitted without EPA conversion so long as it was more than 5 years old a time of entry (1 per person or unlimited to military personnel. They did however need to be DOT updated. "
FWIW
Does anyone have any info on the Federalization rules back then?

I just got an email from the photographer of that forlorn Baur located somewhere near Fort Bragg, CA. Remember the sad-looking one... covered with debris of some sort?
Who is good with maps?
39 degrees 33'57.19"N 123 degrees 46' 03.33"W
That is the location where the pic was taken. It is unknown if the car is still there.
Can you plug that into a GPS and find it? I am GPS-challenged, so forgive me for asking.
We need an intrepid Baurhunter to go take a look, and a pic, if possible!! And make a few inquiries.
Any volunteers?
This one.
Can I say it? I am amazed that we may be able to nail this one. Great thanks to all who contributed, esp mathews, and RickC (photographer).

Ok, boys and girls, I thought Team Baur did a pretty good job in getting some good info on vev's wide body Baur in VA.
Well, you have to check out what they just did with the forlorn "Baur in the Brush" above.
Just amazing to me.

Ok, that was fun! Now how about a hard one for a change?
Can we find the purported Baur Baur? This is NOT a misprint.
A Baur was photographed in Merrick LI, in 2009 that, according to Jeroen, may be the car that was once owned by Christiane Baur, of the Baur family.
It was discussed previously in the "Baur TC1 in the US" thread here on page 6, with pics.
This is also discussed in a new post here: http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/
It may be the only Baur on Long Island. Any Baurspotters or Baurhunters out there?
Let's see if we can find it. The convertibles are starting to emerge for the season.

I came across this a few weeks ago, and speculated at the time if this could be vev's wide body.
"Ryan Way 333i 1979 1998ChamoinxDietel/Alpina "
I found it in a listing of BMW owners, I forget exactly where, but I think it dates back to around 1999. He used the screen name "Alpinafreak".
I have seen this 'alpinafreak' nom de guerre somewhere recently, but can't place it. Anyone know who it is?
Any thoughts, vev? He listed it as a 1979 BMW 333i Chamonix color, "Dietel/alpina". Could this be the guy your brother got the car and the info from? Could there be two 1979 Chamonix Baurs with some special features?

Boy, it sure sounds like mine but I do not think it is. My brother purchased the car from a guy named Mike in Maryland sometime between 1995 and 1997. The car then went from my brother to a friend of mine ("Dave") who had the car in Virginia for a number of years before I purchased it. As much as I would like to say the car referenced is mine, the owner's name doesn't match, the location is wrong and the purchase date doesn't fit the bill. I am scheduled to speak to the first U.S. owner tomorrow. I will certainly inquire about the widebody conversion--I am convinced the conversion was done by ASU--and ask her for any copies of photographs she has of the car.
You are probably right, and I look forward to hearing what you learn tomorrow.
Two things, though:
1) I reviewed that post by Ryan Way, circa 1999, and realized I left out one detail:
19 Ryan Way 333i 1979 1998 Chamoinx Dietel/Alpina Conv.
*
"Dietel/Alpina Conv.".
2). What engine does your car have? As I recall, it may not be the stock engine, correct? Is it the 3.3L?
If it is NOT a stock engine, then.... Man, what an extraordinary coincidence to have two extremely rare cars that nearly fit the same description!!!! . Just sayin.
In the meantime, I am going to work on tracking down that link from 1999.

I spoke to the woman who brought my car to the U.S. She was driving a 914 at the time and wanted a 3-series but with one catch. She wanted a convertible. Because the only E21 convertibles were in Europe, she found her way to Lothar Schuettler probably through the recommendations of a friend. Schuettler located the car and arranged for it to be shipped to the U.S. The car was a stock Baur 323 at the time. No widebody. No performance modifications. Looks like the next stop for me is a small cafe in Annapolis.
As for the motor, to my untrained eye it looks like a typical M20 motor on the outside.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Baur number for Lawrence's car. He's probably going to The Vineyards, so someone there might be able to find out (i'm missing out this year).
AFAIK he owns the Baur, the 2002 and the E30 cabrio. Don't think he has a second Baur, unless he bought it recently.

Yes, Harry, you did post pics of all three of Lawrence's cars back in February 2011. See posts # 219-23 of this thread around p. 8 or 9.
Since the pic of the 2002 was taken at Lime Rock, I am curious if Lawrence saw the other Baur (above) whose pic was also taken at Lime Rock (September 2010). Not sure what date Lawrence was there.
Any way to pin that down?
