    self activating flashers

Self-activating flashers. An owner of a 1993 BMW may complain that the emergency flashers come on by themselves and can't be shut off with the flasher switch. BMW says this may be caused by a bum transistor in the crash control module, which you need to remove. It's a tall brown case stamped with the words "Crash-Alarm-Geber." Check the manufacturing date stamped on the side in white. The first digit of the code indicates the year ("3" means 1993). The second and third digits indicate the week of manufacture (for example, "08" means eighth week). If the unit was built before the eighth week of 1993, replace it. Use Part No. 61 35 1 384 761 for 318i, 318iS, 325i and 325iS models. Use Part No. 61 35 1 384 732 for the 525i, 530i, 540i, 740i, 740iL, 750iL, 840Ci, 850Ci and 850CSi.

I have replaced my crash sensor three times. (used ones from the junk yard).
I still get random flashers when using the windows and sometimes when I open a door.

    Any ideas on that?
It's the only nagging problem I can not figure out.

change the GM, that also sometimes helps. When you change the GM, disconnect the battery, then replace the GM and connect battery again.
GM has to learn the configuration such as if the car has sunroof or not.

I assume the M5 has the same potential for failure?

Hey Shogun, question - does this mean I could remove my foglights, follow these steps, and have the car not give me a F/FOG LIGHT error anymore?

Anyway to bypass the crash relay or does it provide additional functionality other than activating hazards?

This would be the best discovery right next to the automatic window roll up feature.

One of its functions is to activate the hazards during an impact.

I gave up on mine and removed the sensor about 8 months ago. No more random flashers. Only thing is no hazard lights (who cares, I never use them). Turn signals work as they should.

Erich, would you know where the crash sensor module is located on an e36 convertible?

    Thanks, Don

no, the error message is coming from the check control module / CCM. There are tricks to eliminate the error message by 'modifying' the CCM by soldering. Find a guy with knowledge about this to resolder your CCM. Same like the error message for low beam when you switch to HID conversion set.

I have a one touch module developed for E34 and E32 all 4 windows down AND up, see details here

    @TheStigg

Don, I have my E36 M3 only half a year now, not so experienced with that model yet. Better ask the guys on the E36 forum.
I will however give you a link which might help you by PM.

as I just worked on my E36, I found the crash control module. It is located in the relay panel under LH side of the dashboard. There are
K450 X607 park ventilation relay, N17 X65 crash control module, and fuses F48 and F50 and some empty slots.
Just in case you are still searching for it after 2 years ;-)

    STOP!

Reseating the 'General Module' it may help!

It has a mind of it's own with the hazards if not seated correctly

My problem turned out to be corroded wire terminations in the wire bundles under the GM/RM. All of the terminations had to have the corroded wire ends cut and resoldered.

probably you cannot delete the crash alarm relay, additional functions in case of a crash as far as I understand
    unlocking the doors
    flasher/hazzard lights on
headlights off (? please check wiring diagrams for that, not 100% sure)
    fuel supply cut off
    interior lights on
    radio cut off (?)

    His comment:
Anyways, I pulled the crash control module and the hazards stopped randomly flashing. That's good news there.
The bad news is my high beams stopped working. Apparently the crash control module instructs the LKM to disable the high beams. WTF is it with these tricky German engineers? That's not going to work for me, so I take a look at the ETM and figure that I need to jump pins 3 & 9. I get my high beams back. That's good news there.

The other bad news is the hazard switch no longer works. That's also not going to work for me, so I take a look at the ETM, again, and figure that I need to jump pins 5 & 7. I get my hazards back. That's more good news there.

My flashers was coming on at times when started. Hit flasher button on then off and they turned off. Now car has no crank. Sign of bad crash relay?

You have an E36 and you posted your problem already in the E36 forum where there were some answers http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...0#post29433620
Check out if fuse 31 is blown. It powers the heater valve, clock, warning chime, OBC, and something related to the starter or EWS. If it's blown then you can't start the car. Also check whatever fuse and relay power the starter
    Wiring diagrams / ETM are here for E30, E36, E36/7 Z3, E36/5 Compact, E31, (large pdf) https://www.bmwtechinfo.com/etm/data/toc_cd2.pdf

I have also replaced my crash relay twice now and blown each one. If I keep it unplugged the car is find however: Hazards don't function and neither do my high beams. Could a loose GM really cause this? As any one figured a fix for this?

I remember one case on the German 7 forum when someone with an E32 735 had a similar problem, in his case the GM was defective. But if the fuse blows, that means there is a short. Check under rear seat if there is water from blocked around the fuse box with GM and RM. There are a lot of relays and fuses http://bmwe32.masscom.net/johan/elec.../rearseat.html

I finally ended up using a crash relay from an e36 parts car and so far it has been holding up. I ended up sadly selling the car to buy a more modern bmw to use as a daily driver. A decision I already regret, as she was one of the cleanest e32 5 speeds I've seen in the east coast
