I've seen this multiple times, where the shaft breaks. I normally take a pry bar to the pulley and see if I can pry it away from the pump. There's an updated part out there, and a bulletin was issued... Old part was the "LF20" updated part is the "LF30" It is also recommended in the bulletin to replace the pressure hose and o-ring.

Had it towed, and it is the PS pump and the hose has to be replaced also.....something to do with that they don't make the exact same pump for my car (325i w. sport suspension) and something to do with the fact there are 2 different ones...didn't quite understand. Don't know details. All that matters is that I'm just getting it fixed professionally
The power steering reservoir is not breathing! Just unclog the reservoir cap. There is a hole, clear it, using a 6mm drill, ensure that you can blow through it. Also, make sure that the coolant level is around 1/2 to allow for the breathing.

My battery light just pop and steering wheel is so hard. Do you think is the belt?
The situation you described is happening to me so what can i do?
