Selling a brand new BMW crate motor. This is an N54 that works with a 135i, 335i, 535i, etc. It's the twin turbo engine. This engine is brand new from the dealer still in the box. It comes as a long block so it doesn't include any accessories or the turbos. List on this motor is over $12k at the dealer. Looking for $8,000 or offer.

Can I ask where you got this from?!?
Hand built ///M3
It was purchased at the local dealer. I listed it for a friend who has a shop here in Houston. He bought it as a backup for his 335i club race car but can no longer race due to health reasons. So, now no need for the engine.

You were told it's the same motor as what's currently in your E46? It's not the same motor. You'll need to figure out the electronics and getting it installed, turbo's placed, etc. Won't be a straight forward swap. Also, this post is 7 years old. You can get N54's cheap from parts yards now.
No they're 2 different motors it comes out of any 3.5l BMW but it would need to be modded with placement and such but yeah it could fit

N54 is 3.0L but is a close cousin of the N53, which is a direct injection version of the N52, but even the N52 post dates the M54 that was in the E46. However, since both M54 and N52 were found in some cars, like the E60, the swap should be doable. It's the wiring that I would want to be sure of before starting so I did not get into a much more complicated than expected project. I really like the N54 (have an E60 535i with JB4) and have often thought it would be a good swap motor.
