    Question Power Steering Pump

    I need to replace the power steering pump in my 73 Bavaria. BavAuto shows the replacement part to be nearly $650! That's a very expensive powersteering pump. I might have some leads on a remanufactured one, but it's not much cheaper.

    Does anybody know of a potentially cheaper source? Anyone have experience rebuilding powersteering pumps?

    Thanks

    Do you want to keep it original, or are you open to using a newer pump? Based on what I have seen, the E3, E9, E12, and early E24 PS pumps are the same, as they all used the same steering box and were mated to the M30. The problems come when you get to the hydraulic brake booster (brake bomb) versions. I don't know if a newer, non-bomb system will work. (like from an E34, E32)

    I'm currently scrapping 2 E3's. One is a CSi and the other a CS. Both are absolute rust buckets but did drive onto the trailer when we picked them up.

    The biggest problem is that;
    1. I'm in Sydney Australia so postage is not cheap.
    2. We are scrapping very slowly so parts may not come out this year.
    3. I am unaware as to what condition these pumps would be in but woulkd expect a rebuild, seal replacement etc.

    Note also that you can often get power steering pumps from;

    ebay.co.uk and
    ebay.de

    You may also want to try the e12 based 633. The Euro e12 based 633 ran the same engine (bar a slight 0.2 litre increase) as the E3 CSi and the E9 CSi and CSL. My advice would be to look at whether or not the power steering pump from this e12 633 or even e12 635 will interchange as in the UK you should be able to pick one up for $100 plus postage.

    Hope this helps.

    Edit: Had a quick look on ebay.co.uk. They have this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-2500-E3-PO...item4aa51d8c03 item No. 320597756931. You may be able to pick it up for $20 with $150 postage.

    Original poster back again. Sorry for not updating sooner, but for a variety of reasons, I still haven't replaced the pump and I wanted to report once I'd fixed it. Instead, I come back with more questions. Thanks a lot to those who already helped out, shipper and xAtlas0, and Ian from canada who sent me lots of information. I'm a total noobie to bmws and classic cars, so this has been very educational.
    I ended up buying a remanufactured pump for mid 80s e24s and e28s that looks like it will fit, with some new brackets and pulleys but haven't yet installed it. It took a while to get all the bits, etc. During that time i've found that the pump I bought is rated 110 bar and the original pump is 100 bar. I have no way to think about if that's a big difference or not. Now I have some new leads on a more original parts, but I'd also just like to get the power steering back (parking is very annoying!), now that I've got all the parts for the e24 pump.
    Any opinions? Wait a little longer for original parts? 110 bar too big stress on components designed for 100? Will it make the steering mushier? How would people who've done a lot of this kind of stuff weigh the pros and cons of using a part pulled from a running junker vs. remanufactured mismatched part?
    For reference, my car is in pretty nice shape, I bought it last summer, it was nicely fully restored in 1989 and has survived pretty well since then. I'd like to keep her in good shape as a fun sunday driver. I have a 5-speed transmission that the PO gave me, maybe for a project next year. But since buying it, I've just been focused on figuring out what's good and bad and how she behaves. I'm replacing a few little pieces here and there as I go. Mostly I've been learning about finding parts and figuring out which mechanics to trust. A guy with as little mechanical know-how as me probably shouldn't own a 37 year old car, but I don't mind spending a little money (emphasis on little) and i love driving it. So what the hell. I just don't want to eff things up with the wrong replacement parts.
