coolant temp light came on my 2003 540i

Hey guys,I have a 2003 540i, my coolant temperture light came on. any ideas? I noticed that my coolant fan did sound a little odd also. I checked for any coolant leaks and there were none. My coolant level is fine because I checked it. I cant figure this one out.....It only happened when I was parked, if anyone know what it could be let me know.

I was told it could be my Coolant fan but I need a second opinion.

    Thanks guys,

    Richardsoner

What did your coolant temperature light look like?

    +1, I'm almost 100% sure E39's only have a coolant level warning.

There is a Coolant Temperature and Check Coolant Level Warning. It's not a light, the words show on the display. The coolant level /temperature sensor sensor sticks up from the bottom of the coolant overflow tank. I'd consider replacing it, although your coolant temperature gauge should also be pegging.

I always thought the overflow tank only held the coolant level sensor, whereas the coolant temp sensor was located on the top left corner of the radiator.

Is your radiator fan spinning at idle? Fan clutch could be toast if not.

yes it is spinning idle, it is not as loud as is use to be. i am in Jacksonville NC, near Camp Lejeune on business. is there any well respected BMW shop around here that anyone knows of. I only have a week here so I have take care of this ASAP.

    Thanks again

    Two other things:

    You might need:
    New Bleeder screw
    or
    New Expansion tank cap

Both of these should be checked.

    best,
    Jeff
