I've seen the wire push over in the groove because the cylinder head is softer than the block. This was on a 418 cubic inch LS motor with a 250 shot of nitrous...so it's not really a fair comparison to the BMW. It was diagnosed as the head lifting just enough to put the force on the wire...which push over the ledge on the groove. The damage was repaired by welding in a harder aluminum and re-machining everything back to the way it was before. So far...no issues after lots of 9 second passes in a 4,000 lb vehicle!

that doesnt make sense. how far was the wire pressed into the head? was it sitting on the headgasket, or not covered up? hey - at least you got it solved, but still doesnt make sense why it would do that.

The o-ring was stuck to the gasket as well and when the combustion was trying to push past the o-ring, it pushed it over in the groove. The aluminum of the cylinder head is softer than the cast iron block or cylinder liner.

When the head lifts, o-rings fail in the block too...just not in the same manner. I was just giving an example of what I've seen personally. The engine builder that had the o-ring failure on his cylinder head was making at least 1,000 hp when it happened.

biglou911 probably has completely different stories.

Are the Elring stock style gaskets bore opening perfectly round like the cometic 87mm gaskets? I have hear that they are somewhat oval and are not the best for using with o'rings.

I'm in the process of rebuilding an m20 motor for someone out here in Hawaii. We are going to do an experiment. For the sake of longevity, we are going to run a groove in the block with stainless wire with .010 hanging out. I've been researching a while with no real answer to how long copper will hold up. It seems like most people running copper are either running drag cars or getting 5-6k street before something hg related let's go. So, I'm just getting the block torn down tonight and I'll get the cylinders prepped tomorrow. Head is at the machine shop right now. I'll snap some pictures when I get to those steps.
