You can get the M52 Elring, but it comes in a complete top end kit for $197.93 from ALL EUROPEAN here in Michigan. Their number is 248-399-9211
I haven't been able to find the M52 Elrign alone...anywhere.
I bought a Goetze M52 gasket and the construction of the gasket looks like it would seal the coolant passages very well. I don't have an Elring in my hands (yet) to compare the metal cylinder rings to each other. The Goetze is a brass colored metal. I'll post some pictures up when I get a chance.
so.... OEM BMW gasket is seperate.......??

well, ill know in a day or two. they ordered it for me.
i KNOW my machinst can get elring's, cause we have built tons of BMW's together.

You have a link? The only ones I can find on pelican are the 87mm's.Originally Posted by das Boot

^^^there's a OE 85mm head gasket?
i'd try one of those over the regular 84mm I've been using..
wait.... sorry i not sure there is a 85 mm gasket or 84 mm gasket
all i really know is i got the 87 by itself from pelican
sorry for the misinformation.
I'm fairly certain that the m52 gaskets are 85 and the s52 ones are 87. Like 75% sure.Originally Posted by das Boot

Another question on the o ring subject. Who can attest to longevity of different setups? There is alot of input on motors that are in cars setup for drag racing but what about street cars? Will different setups work better or worse with multiple heat cycles as daily driven or just plain old street cars do? Talking to a tuner, he seemed to think that copper will start to not hold up to the abuse that street cars are put through without tear downs every so often like drag motors. Who has proven setups that have withstood thousands of street miles?
In soviet Russia, car forks you!
I probably got close to 8-9000kms (5-6kmiles) on my setup seeing 6psi for break-in and 17-18psi daily as a DD...took the car everywhere to work, to the store, running errands around town and night time science experiments vs the local turbo honda crowd.. I have SS wire o-rings on my block. My head gasket let go this past week due to running it with a low tank of fuel and being WOT on some crazy hills which caused a brief lean condtion. I'm more than confident that if i did have more of a full tank/didn't boost on a low tank i wouldn't be posting this since i'd still be out having as much fun as i could with it before winter gets here!
To briefly answer your question - O-rings for a street car = win! IMHO
off to the machine shop. my machinist says 2 rings are no problem next to each other. no need to "figure 8" them or anything.

just got back- had to help him with a donovan 738CID BBC.... the aluminum rods were hitting the cam shaft(oy! 5.20" stroke). had to use the bridgeport for that before i could scew with my junk.....
in any case, we used stainless piano wire off this huge spool he uses to do all his heads.... IIRC it was .045"?? he has a special cutter that we loaded up on the bridgeport and cut them out. .010 protrusion. tapped them in, good to go! it came out fantastic. two rings next to each other came out great. i told him about this oringing stuff on these BMW engines, if you need it done its not a big deal for him to take care of it.
he does oringing on cylinder heads/blocks prolly 4-8 engines a week. that donovan was oringed on the liners.... it was getting a (not joking, not exaggerating) 2000HP shot of nitrous.

its an S52 M3 engine w/ standard bore.
lemme go get a pic from the head in the garage. yes, i put the orings in the head, the engine doesnt care where they are. my machinist (and now i) believe that isky tool isnt the best way, and that using an bridgeport to do it is better and more accurate.
i would have to ask him how much he would charge.

I just don't feel safe to do this. I'm still gonna do the block. We've doing blocks for years and never problems, but oringing the head we've ran in problems .
