Don't think you can go wrong with o-rings or cut rings. Both seem to do well when done properly. If you have the cut rings already I would just go with those. I don't think there has been an issue as long as there aren't pistons hitting them haha.

So you have half a mm to spare on either side. Aka half a penny...
    That sounds extremely homosexual.

Bumping an old thread here... Sorry about that.

I bought o-ringing tool and made a grooves in two steps, 0.015" each for a final groove dept of 0.030". Using copper 0.041" wire that came with a tool along with 1mm MLS head gasket. All of the work is done on M54B25.
The grooves came out okay, but could be better if done in three steps. One thing I don't like is that wire does not seem lay down evenly and protrudes unevenly above the block. The small test wire I installed is about 5" long and I used rubber mallet to install it. I don't have anything to measure the depth, but will try to grab tire thread gauge which seems to have a small enough needle to fit into the groove and still has +-0.2mm precision.

Did anyone else observe this when installing the wire?

As silly as it may sound, rubber mallet had a rough surface which caused what I described above. I noticed it shortly after making the post...
Grabbed fresh piece of wire and it lays down into a groove perfectly using a new rubber mallet.

Orings and an mls gasket is not a wise decision.

Broke alot of transmissions, but never a motor.
