    Re-Coding/Calibrating Rain Sensor

I had my windshield replaced and am having issues with the rain sensor. Anybody familiar with how to re-code after having the windshield replaced for the rain sensor?

Don't need to recode it, the car knows it's there, and there is no calibrate.

Looks like the people who changed your windshield messed up.

just pop the cover off and take a look to make sure the sensor is plugged in and also attached to the windshield.

    Too many to list.
re-initialize it in INPA. Then the stalk to position 1, sprinkle water to test.

I've got Carsoft, so INPA will cod/re-initialize the rain sensor?

INPA users can you confirm this?

Coding and initialization are two different things. I'm sure INPA can re-initialize the module, but coding would be something you need NCS Expert for.

Did you see how the rain sensor is mounted to the windshield? It should be completely smooth, no air pockets (with the exception possibly one perfectly circular "bubble" in the lower left if you have the light sensor). If there is any air in between the sensor will not function well at all.

    +1 ^

If it was an existing option, there shouldn't be any coding necessary and INPA will do it.. If you're adding/retrofitting it, thats a SSS/Progman or NCS task.

This could be a "hardware" problem and not a software problem...

If they didn't put the correct windshield on the car, there will not be the cutout in the IR film on the window and the sensor can have issues. I have seen E38 guys with this problem. Can you confirm the PN of the windshield they installed?

the winshield will either come with it or without... if it comes without then there will be no place to mount the sensor and u will know easily

TIS begs to differ. Error codes can be read on it and it can be re-initialized. Also states if the software version loaded is below a certain number to replace the module. See attachment.

Also can be coded to active/non-active and sensitive/ less sensitive with DIS according to TIS!

reinitialization != recoding as I mentioned earlier in this thread. Yes you can recode the module too, but it won't accomplish anything; recoding simply resets the fsw/psw to the default - which the module should already be at. You can reinitialize the module, and maybe that'll fix your problem, idk. But 99% of the rain sensor problems I've seen are due to poor mounting to the windshield.

And replacement is simply that, replacement. On earlier cars (before E65) the only modules that can really be reprogrammed are the DME and EGS. The rest of them are stuck at whatever software version they shipped it. This is why earlier E46s can't gain the triple blink capability without getting a brand new LSZ.

Is the INPA software the same as the P.A.Soft software version 1.4? Sorry, first question on the forum. If so, where do you initialize the rain sensor? I just go a new windshield and my rain sensor doesn't work either.

Thank you for your response to a noobie!

    No!

INPA is BMW software. And PA Soft belongs in the trash.

Just chiming in to note that my rain sensor did not work when I first got my E39, looks to be original windshield, no idea of previous history.... re-initialized it via INPA and all was good.
(but honestly I forget now where it is amongst the INPA menus)

Not knowing exactly how your version will be setup....

Find the E39 section (might be under older models)
    Go to BODY
    Go to Rain Sensor AIC
    Hit F6 (Initialize Sensor)
    Done

According to ISTA-D it needs to be done. FYI, heres what it looks like in ISTA-D. Code was present and test plan calculated see attached.

Hi, as above can someone describe the more or less exact steps on ISTA aka Rheingold on how to start the calibration procedure.

Lights for me work fine...rain sensor not so much, windshield seems to have been changed and will change this one soon as it does not have UV protection.

    Thanks in advance !
