Yes there are a lot of cars now on the boards with wheel porn induced BBS RS/RM rims, epic engines swaps and excellent styling on the board, its almost like we are entering a golden age where the E21 is actually getting recognized as a primal collectible and fun car..
I am keeping my fingers crossed for the swap and this sums it up the best:

Sorry for the name mix-up, Joe
How long after you installed Tyler's engine did you notice the problems? Were you able to get any money back from him? That's really too bad that this happened. If he tracked it, maybe he starved the engine of oil while cornering at 7K, or something like that. I've heard of piston slap in high milage engines that goes away after it warms up a bit and pistons expand, but that engine sounded like it was abused. The piston even looks new! Side skirts have scuffing...
No problem with the name...we have not met but I do have to go out to Seattle once in a while to visit my company's office out there in federal way. I tried to meet Jesse last time I was out there...
Anyway the engine block was stored in the second bedroom of my condo unit where the water or condensation could not get near it. I assumed this engine was good.
I did not put a single mile on the engine, we tore into it when I want to replace the crank with the 524td crank, and noticed the piston slap and scrapped the whole internals. Yes you can see the scuffing on the sides of the pistons, I no longer have the pics, but it was bad. And I never got even a single dollar from him, as he stopped working for Bav Auto, and was long gone. He also sold me the block without the oil pan or head, I had to source all these parts. He claimed the pistons where worth $800 and he also had to bore to get to 2.8. I am not sure what he did at the track, I don't track my car, and after all this will never track it... but he told me he overfilled the oil or topped off when he went done to lime rock park. I dont know what happened, but I have talked to Leo about it, and he claims the new build is done to his standards...

One of these days I will read one of your threads to find a completed project!! Holy smokes, I would be so anxious to finally get in the driver seat, turn the key and drive. Cant imagine the wait. At least you have a VW to give you some kind of grin......even though it is a VW
My friend this thread is going to document the completed project. We will make some legion videos of all the cars following one another.
The engine is totally new and going into the car. The car has been restored.
Although nothing is ever done, my friend says this reminds him of the story of a WWII plane stuck in the ice, that was found and a team spent years freeing in the summer and tried to fly out, and after all that the plane caught fire on take off.
Yes the MK2 VR6 gives me a grin every day I pull on it....like this morning..
That car is not in great shape, but so much fun...

UPDATE:
I have returned from out west, and my birthday and the bav auto show and shine is almost upon us.
I will not have the car with the swap ready for the show, the guy who has my car did the swap of an m50 into and e30 before mine.
So now my engine bay has been repainted and the fuse box is underneath - and not in the hood area.
Should not be too long will try to update with a pic or two in a few days

Removed the wiring harness from the engine bay, Removed all grease and grime from the front subframe, removed old control arms, reinstalled Jester's custom urethane front control arms and steering rack bushings, ZF sports steering rack is in.
Next up more painting and prep. I am going to the show and shine on birthday and will get the e21 323i master cylinder. We are getting closer...I can feel it....Have lots of parts including the south bend stage 2 clutch and 325i 11 pound flywheel waiting to go in....

Hi,
I'm just wondering if there is a special reason why the rear water pipe on the head is mounted to other way round - do you plan major changes in the engine compartment?
Looking forward to see the project completed and get documented through some
more photos.

Small update, some progress, right after I started stripping the black powdercoating
and before the sanding...with the stray cat I adopted...
Right after finished sanding the rough casting ridges there..this took many hours and i dont have a shop so I watched the discovery and history channel and sanded. I watched a lot of ancient aliens....and I finally got them smooth.
Finished product, after chroming. Once it comes home, from the chromers,
it should provide the needed parts for the new engine.
I also rechromed the hood grabbers, as the old set I had done I did not like the chromed pits where it was rusted...
Wishing everyone a happy thanksgiving, I am going overseas for about a week, hoping to have the engine in with the new mani after I get back.

OMG!
Yes!
Eric P.
Yes buddy thanks - I am getting excited for the installation of the new engine and cant wait to get the chromed mani back, I am glad I sanded the ridges off now....
Yes well I considered the other master cylinder with 4 lines to the front rather than two, - I think thats the e12, but I have already T - my brake lines to work with only one stainless steel line to the front with the Hartge calipers. So I got a brand new 323i master cylinder. I am now working on the upgrade to rear brakes - converting them to the e30 325i ones, with stainless steel lines. I am stripping down the extra set of e21 323i trailing arms that i have and preping them to be powdercoated. I also have the mounting brackets for the e30 calipers.
And I also have been sanding down the Alpina Clone finned diff cover that I have and getting that ready for powdercoating and install.

Thats what I'm thinkin'.
Oh my god! I love the chrome. It is so nice to see someone doing something different. It seems that everyone does the classic black/silver stuff with their BMW engines (I like that too.) I say chrome that diff. cover. You should consider chroming the timing cover too.
I wonder what it would look like if you chromed the blower motor cover on the firewall?
Thanks, I will need a capital injection if I keep chroming things, and I heard the the alpina diff cover will not work with the ansa mufflers I have...not sure why not. You only see the bottom of the cover - the fins - it is not that noticable, thats why i was thinking about powdercoating it. But maybe I will chrome it. I don't have many other pics of the chrome parts since they are still at the chromers. I have shaved a lot of stuff in the bay so its going to really look the great in there. The only thing else I was thinking about doing is building some metal heat sheilds and chroming them too.
Here is a shot of the famous 323i with the M30 that was an inspiration and got me to chrome the fender bolts and hood grabbers....it also has a chromed cage in it:
The timing belt cover has been powdercoated a special type of candy apple red that is first down in silver and then red over it.
It makes the part look awesome, when the light hits it. I also did this to the valve cover, but you have to see it in the light.....I am thinking about however using the Hartge valve cover I have.
Not sure how the chrome of the mani is going to look with the headers which have been redone in sterling silver by Jet hot coatings.....

Joe,
Your progress is still moving right along, very impressive.
With your exhaust you will find the way the right side muffler comes around the back of the diff. it will no longer work with the Alpina cover becouse the cover is larger (more oil capacity) and with the spare tire well right there, you have lost the space for a pipe.
I have seen a few different ways to run the right side pipe, but keep in mind you do not want to block the air flow accross the fins or introduce heat from the exhaust to the diff. cover.
I ran my exhaust out the right side of the diff. like Alpina did with the system they made for the E21. It is a pain to get by the fuel tank and pump, but so was the Alpina system to install. You will want to be picky with the exhaust shop you choose.
I found that keeping the exhaust separate in the 2 pipes out of the headers until about right under the rear seat gave me the best powerband. I have built more that 3 systems for my car and the X pipe at the back worked best.
I used some corrugated alum. heat shield that BMW has been using for a few years now to make a heat shield for the fuel pump/filter. you can buy this from BMW in various pre-formed shapes and cut/bend it to what you want.
You might not want to coat the cover with anything as that will keep it from being able to shed heat from the oil. I have a diff. oil temp gauge in my cluster as there is the sender hole drilled and taped in the cover, and this is what Alpina did with the cars they built. It takes about a hour of driving before the oil temp gets up enough to regester and mine will not get over about 170 durring a long hard flog, but the idea is that a diff. bearing failure will show as the temp will soar.
Did you find a new receiver to weld in for the other bushing in the diff. cover?
I found the new mounting greatly improved high load cornering as it keeps the diff./subframe from moving around and the backend of the car more stable.
I think you need to do a cross country tour with this Bad Boy when you finish it as it deserves to be shown off!!
Jeff
Jeff thanks...I love your car. I will come out for a show sometime with you all, I promise.
Can you provide a pic or two of both the sender, the alpina diff cover installed and the way you routed the exhaust pipe through the fuel pump, and the heat sheild?
I would like to see it and I don't want to put it around the other side, the finned side of the cover. Also where did you get the temp sender. I quess if it gets that hot I should jet hot coat it rather than powdercoat or chrome. I do not have a reciever to weld in I will have to fab one up, when the time comes. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Just a quick update..a pic of the back side of the manifold - chromed with out the casting ridges
Not my car but You can see how the rear exhaust needs to be routed....threw the fuel pump

Thanks, I can wait to finish the engine, and put everything together.
The Ansa headers and Ansa down pipes where free from Jet Hot, as last time I got them done, I got the lifetime warrenty all i had to pay for was the shipping. I got them redone in Sterling Silver finish, and I am going to get the dual cover done in the same....

Joe - i hope to one day read a thread by you telling us how you flogged the hell out of your E21 around some track because it definitely can tear it up once you get in on the road. As nice as it will be, that whole package is just BEGGING to be put through its paces.
