E34 Sedan or Touring Double Socket Towhook / bar / hitch

I'm not sure what the US term is but in the UK it's usually as Towbar. Anyway, whatever it is, I have one for sale. it comes with all the bolts and fixings, and with twin sockets (in the UK we have 7-pin and 12-pin versions for trailers and for caravans resp.).
It is a detachable one which means with a couple of 19mm spanners you can remove the ball but the mounting remains in place, which is only really useful to preserve the looks of the car so I wouldn't bother.
You'll need to cut a hole about 2 inches diameter in your rear bumper to fit.

    It looks much like this:

    And I'll be asking for $100 + shipping @ $100 = $200 all in, ready to fit.

Let me know if there is any interest.

I'm interested. I'd love to know how much it weighs, and shipping cost.

Also, is there a max towing weight for it?

Was it you that asked me to find you one before? A couple of people have mentioned them.

Max. towing weight should be rated at the same as the car itself, 1600kg, with a 50kg noseweight.

DHL are not being complete arses and I can ship it express for 100 bucks.

Looks kinda rough but kinda cool, Is this the factory bmw towbar?

On real oem it says the factory unit is a class III hitch.

I had a CL III hitch. It had a removable ball and looked a little different. Not tryin to crap on your thread, but that does not look like a CL III hitch.

As far as I know it is the OEM hitch - certainly looked like it to me.
The car it came off had 206,000 miles so forgive it a bit of roughness! It's solid though.
There's no class regulations in the UK like what you have - but a towbar sold here must meet the towing capabilities of the car, hence even if it is an a/m bar, it still has to be rated to 1600kg like the E34 is.

Oh, maybe just to quell any worries, I have a very similar Bosal a/m one on my touring, and I've hauled a 1.6 ton load with it (compact car and trailer).

P.s. I also have a sedan hitch lying here somewhere, and an E36 saloon one...

    Yeah baby, lets DO this!

I photographed the removal of a Touring hitch, so if I post the pics in reverse, we should have a fitting guide. Let's go.

Start with a Touring, for a start. Say hi to my black '93 525i. Which, incidentally, left my ownership the same day the tow hitch was removed, swapped for a Alpineweiss II 730iA.

Next, look inside your spare wheel well. Find the plastic covers and remove. There are two at each side, the two on the left being around this triangular piece of body-shell.

You'll want to now take your rear bumper off.
After that, look at the inch-high recess under the shut-line of the rear hatch. In there, in line with the holes you just exposed in the boot, are four punch-out holes in the bodywork. Simply take a bar less than an inch diameter, and a good hammer, and knock them out. They are where these bolts go through:

These bolts go through a 3/4" by 6" slice of metal including in your fitting kit, which acts as a washer and load-dissipater.

These bolts are through a u-shaped piece of metal which in turn is bolted to the bar of the hitch - pretty straightforward.

next, underneath and behind where those bolts went through (some crawling on ground required)... looking directly up from underneath...

another 17mm bolt goes in here. There are holes pre-drilled and pre-tapped for this.

And at the two ends of the main bar there are two 'wings' as you can see in the first post in the thread. Again pre-tapped holes to fit to - the rear is another 17mm, the front is a 13 or 15mm for some unknown reason. Be careful of your exhaust, it may be hot, and most likely in the way.

And then I will leave the fitting of the removable hitch up to yourselves - two 19mm (or 21mm) bolts through, which must be solid, and drill a hole or cut a slot out of the rear bumper, depending on application.

All happy now? Good. Peace out.

Hey Will, I just installed the hitch this morning, easy-peasy. Took about 2 hours total, minus cutting a hole in the bumper and reinstalling.

It was super easy, and I was stoked to see that all the holes were already drilled and tapped. I used a brush to clean out the crud and then the bolts threaded right in.

The only bit that had me worried was the first part you covered. I didn't know there were punchouts, so I just drilled holes through the mount and it went fine.

Next up I need to figure out the wiring, we use flat 5-plug wiring mostly here, so I'll just splice some of that into the stock harness.

Any other ideas on wiring Will?

And for others out there, this hitch is rated to tow 2100 kg (over 4200 lbs) well more than the e34 limits.

I guess I can't help a great deal with the wiring if it's different to our 13-plug harness. There is supposed to be a punch-out for the harness to go through as well but I couldn't find it on my T...

Time for a rather mega thread bump. I found more hitches today, buried away at the back of my dismantling area! Also just took delivery of a sedan with a factory removable/lockable hitch set-up, AND have another sedan coming next week which has one as well I believe. Still $200 shipped.

Send me some pics of the Sedan and Touring hitches you've got... A buddy of mine really wants a hide-able Touring hitch, and Im thinking about putting one of my Sedan. Just have to figure out if I can make it work without cutting my M-Bumper.

    Hey guys,
tried to get a couple of fresh snaps today but 90mph wind and driving rain said no.

grabbed a couple but they're not great:

IIRC the sedan ones don't have the same plates that go up under the tailgate. I need to take off another sedan one so that I can remember properly! Some of them also don't have the 'wings' on th end but that could be down to whether it's an OEM piece or not...
