Makes it easy if you ever have to remove/install the engine
open the hood
remove the clips holding the hood shock
Remove the hood shock while supporting the hood
Repeat for the other side
Lift the hood all the way up until the holes on the hood hinge are aligned.
Insert a bolt or rod through the hole
Reverse to return the hood to the normal position

very nice,thank you sir
Who knew? Thanks.
Missed this one. Very nice tip.
I'll tow it to E39 DIY for you.
That's a good tip. Thank you for sharing.
Don't you have to remove both hood shocks before you open the hood all the way up (you mentioned to repeat on the other side, but is that possible without the hood shocks on both side off first)?
Great idea for when you have work close to the firewall.

What size / thread pitch is the bolt?
Schitzo,
This is a very cool trick & thanks for sharing it with us. Next time you do it please post some pictures way from the car so we can see how wide open the hood stays as you do this. Thank you in advance...
Wow, this is a good little thing to know. Thanks!
I do have one I'll see if I can dig it up
its not a threaded hole hence a metal rod or bolt will work just fine. I used a M8 bolt if I remember correctly.
I wish I had know it before installing my engine. It made things tough until I was done with the install and realized this was possible.
best pic i have

i hope i never need to know this
This is great news. I never knew about the hood service position in e39. I was always envious about how my dad's Benz hood could go straight up just by pressing in some locking knobs near the hinges. Now i can boast and say the bimmer can do eet too. Can't wait to try this.
