Did some rust control inside my trunk, spent about 4 hours with a couple wire wheels in a drill to bring it all down to bare metal and taped it off for overspray. I couldn’t find POR-15 in my area and by the time it ships home I would have already been getting ready for Parris Island. I wanted to get this done before I head out before it gets any worse.
I found some Rustoleum in a can that seems promising, I’ll have one of my brothers report if anything fails while I’m off at boot camp.

I hear NAPA sells spray paint that “matches” oem paint so I’ll give them a try, it is just the trunk after all.
I’ll finish it off by jigsawing a couple pieces of plywood and stretching some gray fake leather over it to match the toolkit.

I did something similar using leftover snap together wood flooring after doing all the bedrooms at my mom's place.

Found the paint, but not what was expected, an e30 forum said that there’s a rattle can called “arctic white” for General Motors vehicles that closely resembles BMW Alpine White. This is not the case. I gave it a shot and it is a lot whiter and brighter than I was hoping.
I guess it is safe to say I shouldn’t have trusted the forum as the words “dope” “mint” and “stance” were mentioned quite a bit:

Regardless, this is just a temporary fix to stop the rust from going to anything important like body panels as the trunk pan is pretty much toast and it will be covered up.
I have another car I’m planning on turning into my daily after my service and this one I believe I’ll turn over to my brothers to make it an HSR car for VIR while I’m gone.
Trunk pan will likely be tossed for sheet metal to fit a fuel cell so I’m not worried as to how it turned out as long as it retards the rust until a permanent solution is installed.

I installed new wiper damper rings since mine were completely missing. They were a little expensive, but my wipers no longer wobble around and make scraping noises on the fast setting.

Viton O-rings came in today, I assembled it. Calibration for Warm and Cold Control Pressure next. Ran into a problem,, The Ceramic Resistor heater in the Wur, I changed it out for a new one and found no warm control pressure, I tested it by placing 12 v across the pins and found it was defective even though it showed 22 Ohm resistance, I had a good old one and placed 12 v across the pins and it heated up real fast, so I installed the older one with new Viton o-ring new aluminum solder and its works just fine after warm and cold calibration. So to check the Wur resistor is good or defective you put 12 v across the pins and touch it, if its hot after a few seconds its good, if slow to heat--its still good for a while and if no heat its defective. Needless to say I wont be doing business with Colin( K-jet Colin)again nothing but excuses and he does not test them from what he said to me and he wont make it right, I wont trust him with my car parts again. I got a refund on my second order. Update 3/14/18--just got refund on my first order,,evidently he tested some and found they were defective.

I fitted a trunk mat since the one in my 323i went missing in the 80s. I completely forgot about the US/Euro trunk difference until I got the mat in and realized it was ~3" too short. It's an improvement, at least.

What did you do to your e21 today?

Fuel pump came in from FCP euro, I like the idea of a lifetime warranty on everything they sell.
Spent the weekend pulling out the fuel pump regulator and filter cluster from the rear and reinstalling it with a new pump.
The hose from the top of the tank running to the pump was completely gone. Crumbled away in your hands when you touched it.
My dad gave me the ingenious idea to duck-tape the end of the old hose to the end of the new one, that way I could easily pull out the old hose while feeding in the new one.
Just make sure you wrap enough duck-tape around the old hose to prevent it pulling loose.

    Pic dump:

Did some Pick N Pull shopping over the last 2 days. Got the front strut uprights, some tail light reflectors and wiring to make quad brake lights, ignition control module, some other little odds and ends, and my favorite, lots of old paperwork which includes the original window sticker and invoice. The glove box was stuffed with maintenance and service done at the dealer and 80's and 90's SMOG test results. Shame it ended up at the yard like this.

It was over 2 days because when I first went on Saturday to try and grab the struts I just could not get the ball joint off from the right side control arm. Probably spent an hour whacking it with the jack from the trunk and trying to pry with my Harbor Freight breaker bar but it would not budge. I had also conveniently forgotten my hammer. So I left for the day and got a $10 pickle fork from Harbor Freight and went back today. 2 seconds with the right tool and it slipped right off on both sides.

Took my wife out to dinner in the 323i the other night, and right after she put her seatbelt on, she said, "hey, your car doesn't smell anymore!"

Forgot to add, just before this, she opened the passenger door and the quarter panel trim popped right off onto the ground right at that moment. I thought maybe Id done something wrong, but realized this is one piece of the car I've never touched before - like other things on the right side of the car the threaded retainer for the trim was plain missing, just held on by the two snap-clips

Took today off and finished up my ignition switch replacement. If you've read my thread on "Ignition Switch Search" I was having trouble replacing the electrical part of the ignition switch. Good thing too because when I took the whole column lock assembly out I found out what the real problem was. The end of the shaft on the key tumbler side was partially broken off allowing for lost motion in the lock and the inability to fully shut off the system. Likely in its life someone was trying to start the car with the column lock engaged. This condition was evident when I bought the car last October. Key off and out of the cylinder the accessories remained on. Had to keep the fuse out for the clock etc.

I had already bought a new electrical switch and the tumbler felt real healthy. Luckily I found just the column lock housing on eBay for $57 with free shipping. (someone was looking out for me)

I finally got around to pulling off all the old under hood foam insulation that was deteriorating.
