New fuel injectors, injector seals, air filter, spark plugs, new distributor cap/rotor and cables... engine instantly felt stronger and smoother.

    Cool

Changed out the cloth braided hose that connects the two gas tanks on top for ventilation, new distribution piece, and new bottom hose connecting the two tanks with new BMW Clamps. This completes the ventilation system being refreshed, I have a new Carbon Canister already installed with lifetime warranty from fcpeuro before the current price increase. You'll only have to remove one tank to change out this hose-2 bolts in front and one in back, 4 bolts on the Hose Protector, 2 clamps on the bottom hose, very little sediment in the tanks.

Aman, you pics above have encouraged me to finally take the back seat out of my 83 and determine exactly what is leaking back there. John

It could be the o-ring under the fuel pump/gas level unit, the cloth hose cracking under the clamps or the cloth hose cracking or the clamps loosening up as with mine they were pinch clamps done some time ago and the hose was discolored from gray as in being vapor saturated. I ran the gas down to below a quarter of a tank, then drained into 3 gallon containers. You'll be moving all around under the car,, I put the driver side gas tank top hose in from the back and used a screw type clamp to secure it supporting the front by Lynx load levelers and according to the bmw service manual the hose needs to be no more than 600 mm or 23.622" ,, 2 ft is plenty, the top ventilation hose fits thru a tunnel like hole over the drive shaft from the access panel under the back seat to the drivers side gas tank top ventilation fitting. Its a several hour job starting in the morning. John, The gas tank is very light and is steel. I took the back driver side tire off for added access and used 4 ton jack stands on back rear axle carrier, chocked the front tires and had additional support under the center of the rear axle carrier and took off the negative battery cable first.. enjoy the job.

I did the tank to tank hose as Cal Smog test now pressures up ventilation system to 2 psi or so and checks for leaks, this was the last replacement of cloth hose as I had replaced all the other hoses earlier on, now they can test away, it will pass with flying colors. If one pressures this system up too much such that it opens the spring in the charcoal canister the pressure would come out the air cleaner and give a false reading that there is a leak, if they test by vacuum they have to be careful not to damage the spring( or one way valve upgrade) and or collapse its housing in the expensive charcoal canister, also when filling it up it leaked from that area, just filled it up and no leaks.

    Turbo

Sure. It is a Century turbo kit, developed and sold in the early 80s by a southern CA BMW dealership (Century BMW). They used a BAE exhaust manifold, Rayjay turbo, and their own creation of an intake manifold. In addition they supplied the pipes, waste gate, downpipe, fuel enrichment, and hoses and fittings. Pretty much bolt-on and didn't require an intercooler or changes to the internals of the engine. I did have to drill and tap into the oil filter housing (oil feed) and the block (oil return hose), which I outsourced. The rest is doable for a DIY.
Low boost at about 5-6 psi.
I have an old test in C&D, and the power increase is an amazing 50+%.

I found a used kit a few months ago, had the turbo rebuilt and other parts ceramic coated. Using a modern electronic WUR instead of the old fuel enrichment, I am hoping to have full control of the AFR (monitoring with a gauge).
It's smog legal in CA, so I am happy about that, and very excited to see how it runs. This weekend I will know more...

finally got around to installing the new carpet kit I bought 5 years or so ago off Ken D.

After I cleaned the floor up, killed the rust, primed, painted and applied new sound deadening material.

Carpet kit is not as good as a molded factory kit but it is MUCH BETTER than the original carpet that was in it!

That looks really good, I plan on getting a carpet kit with mass backing and doing this as well.

Finally done!!! Car runs great, a little hard to start, but I need to fine tune the programmable WUR. Low end torque is ok, but it really wakes up at about 4000 rpm. What I like is that 1. The kit is absolutely amazing when it comes to fit and finish, factory looking, and 2. it behaves just like it did before, just a decent amount of extra power.

Here is a video at idle:

I revisited my spare Getrag 245 5 sp as I wanted to see the input shaft bearing one has come up for sale on e bay and looked different.
    one from e bays-l160p.jpgs-l1600s.jpg

one installed in my spare Getrag 245DSCI0246.JPGDSCI0249.JPGDSCI0250.JPG

One installed in Getrag 245 5 speed looks like a hold over from the Getrag 4 sp 242. I sealed up the input shaft bearing cover(throw out bearing holder with pressed spacer or shim made in Switzerland) with High Tack as no paper gasket is listed for this application and a dab on the bolt threads to keep them in(thread locker may be your friend here as well), I decided to check out the torque on the securing bolts- M6's of the input shaft bearing cover, I used my inch -lb torque wrench, here is what I found,, I torqued the bolts to 30 + in lbs and the shaft was locked,, I dropped it down to 10 in lbs and the shaft spun freely-almost zero load on the bearings which makes the bearing manufacturers jump for joy as most bearings are zero load rated, the reason why the shaft stopped turning is old school input shaft bearing are open faced and when the swiss spacer is pressed in too far it stops rotation of the bearings as it contacts the ball holder plate( pic #4) which stops the round bearings from free wheeling, so the old school are ball bearings open faced and newer ones are closed face cylindrical bearings..looks like the cages of both are polyamide 66 or so. Its okay if your not using High Tack on shaft cover to seal from leaks, next time, dont block the top hole(no threads)--this is a fill/drainage hole and the swiss spacer has a small opening between it and the throw out holder casing or housing to drain back thru the bearings and vice versa.....

Shades of differential turning torque done to perfection.

Sourced a plexiglass wind deflector from a salvage yard Nissan Maxima and installed it on my alpineweiss '83. Had to shorten the metal connecters to get a tight fit. Open air driving is quieter now.

Installed an early model third brake light from an e30 into my '83 320i. Simple to do. Just connect the third light into the brake light circuit at either brake light. My car even had a pre drilled hole in the metal underneath the parcel tray through which to run the wire to the third light. The slope of the rear window fits well with early model e30 and e28 third lights, which makes for a factory looking install. I haven't seen any research, but I imagine that third brake lights prevent a few rear end collisions.
