I can only imagine how pissed you were when you realized you missed the inside part the first time. But seriously man, it looks great. I can't wait to do it. That chrome drives me nuts.

Just started mine yesterday. Got one side of the car done then it started to rain. Hopefully no one notices until I'm able to finish....

Why could you not just take off the trim then paint it? I will probably do this because I have to fix some minor surface rust in the gutter.

I realize that this is an extremely old post, but I am planning to shadowline the trim of my e34 touring, in situ, with SEM paint. However, the pictures in the first post are no longer active (no surprise) and I could use some advice re: proper technique for masking to ensure that all of the trim gets painted, including the lower portion of the trim that shows when the door is open.

Any advice/pictures on this point would be much appreciated.

Thanks, but not my car. I bumped this thread to get advice/guidance on shadowing the trim without removing it, but at the same time ensuring that the inside portion gets painted. In particular, the OP references the "proper" method for masking to ensure that the inside lip of the window trim catches paint.

I would really urge you to fully remove the trim, paint it well and then reinstall it using new clips. It is very easy and cheap, and will end up being a better job I think.

Thanks Trevor. I remember seeing your DIY post earlier this year.

I removed the upper window trim on my e34 m5 when I did the shadowline. Getting it off (gently) was easy, although I had tough time getting it back on properly even with new clips. I would therefore prefer to paint it in situ, but certainly don't want to end up with the chrome being visible when the doors are open.
