Hopefully you can give us something more than the numerous BMW VIN look-ups on the internet....which naturally state that the car is automatic (like they "all" were).
Interestingly, the car was titled, insured, repaired, etc for over 20 years under the incorrect VIN in California. The number everyone has been using is the number above (which is on the car) but with an 8 instead of a B in the 10th position. In the process of titling the car in Idaho, I've had the error corrected. One has to wonder how the discrepancy was allowed to exist for so long.
Thanks for any help.

what is ETK? How do I access it? thanks
Charley
Okay, I have a friend that was able to run the VIN into the dealer system. No luck. I have seen many cars that have been imported and BMW will have the VIN on file if they were done correctly. I ran the VIN into ETK and it comes up as a Automatic.
But interesting side note, there were many E28 535I that were labeled as automatics that were manuals. Maybe some one on here can enlighten me as to why but I have seen many incorrectly badged cars.
So I dont know what to tell you. I would guess to say that all the 745I s were labeled as auto's but if they build some special cars they were labeled as autos.
TCM326- ETK stands for Eletrick Tele Katalog. Its a poor translation but its there computer based parts system. It is what realoem.com is based from. I think you can buy it from the dealer if I am correct.
Well, thanks for trying.
Like I said, when I have some time to do it I will contact BMW about it. I am not super hopeful though.
It's fun to drive (with the manual gearbox). Unfortunately I never drive it due to engine.....issues. Someday I will find the time to take it to Boise and have it looked at.
Reviving an old Thread!
I'm the new owner of this beautiful car! (not that new owned it for a couple years now)
Last time it was seen on the forum was from https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ctic-E23-Build and Dan the man entrusted in me to complete the car and get it back on the road.
Going to try to get ahold of BMW to get the factory specs.
Eventually going to make a thread of the build progress but would appreciate any tips!
Cheers!
Beautiful car mate and congrats. I've had to manually convert any 745i I've owned so you really scored. Its day and night difference with a manual transmission.
Great solid cars, I've driven a few from Utah to Cali and Oregon to Cali, they love long distances

Look under the rear seat and maybe a computer tractor driven sheet has the build codes on it. This was attached to the seat bottom support bars.
The VIN decoders probably do not have this car since it was a 10/1980 build as the info seems to be lost for most before about 1983.
We can see the upholstery, the cassette case the wood the OBC and a few other features so it might be possible to recreate the build sheet for the car, knowing the options available back in 10/1980 and of course the standard equipment for a 745
Agree with Keith, no ASAP sheets for anything before '83 in my experience...my old 12/82 Ljet 745i was a prime example. I have seen them for 01/83 Ljet 745i though if you can believe it.
Glad to see this car being finished.
I make E23 parts.

What if nothing comes back on ETK?
The ETK is the Electronic parts (Teile) Katalog and is on the web as realoem and that vin, 7531210 comes back as an October 80 build.
Have you looked under the back seat for a build sheet?
