The psi is secondary to the volume. An hvlp gun doesn't need that kind of pressure to atomize, but will still ned 6-8 cfm, and your little compressor won't put out that kind of volume. If you shake the gun while spraying, or at intervals, the particulate will stay suspended or mixed. Spraying metallic is the same concept

I dyed a seat back today with an airgun. While it might take a bit of time considering the dry time and multiple coats it really does not slow the process. Seats are vinyl from a later 633 that were light beige and dyed to Gobi Beige. Here are a couple pics.

Hello- I just completed the re-dying and thought I should share the results and close this thread off.
First, I have to say, this was the best $150 I have ever spent on restoring a car. Secondly, my seats were really trashed and I wasn't going for a flawless outcome since my base to work with was so terrible. But, that being said, I'm pretty blown away with the outcome.

Not the best picts (iphone images), but should show the results. Yes, it does really take 3 days including the curing time. I wish I could have spray gunned it, but did a brush instead and am amazed how easy it was and how well the dye behaves.
So, there you go... Not overly shinny at all. Definitely worth the time and $$$.
