No.... it's natural to think that, but the blind pushes up from the bottom along the window....a scissor effect. It then nestles into a long slot of the shelf when at rest.
I've just been informed that the one I was looking to buy "isn't working" when I asked the guy at the breakers if he knew what was wrong with it he said he didn't know 'cos he didn't test it. Would I be foolish to take the mechanism and (providing it's not too expensive) get a new drive unit. Has anyone else had one fail (I thought I read somewhere that Randy did but I can't seem to find it now).
Steve
That description is open ended..... usually it's a problem with the mechanicals (drive gear)and not the drive motor itself. Sometimes it's just all gunked up. If you can get it cheap enough Steve using the 'not working' thing as leverage, go for it especially if you can get the parcel shelf thrown in. It's funny about these blinds....some like'um some don't. For me it's just one of those deals where a factory option gets added.... if I wasn't into it cheap I wouldn't bother.

Yeah. Unfortunately it's just a general breakers yard so they seem less inclined to go the extra mile that a specialist may do.
Anyway, thanks Randy, that was exactly the sort of answer I was hoping for... hopefully a bit of elbow grease will get it going again. To be honest the price I've been given of £65 delivered seems pretty good (and that was based on a working part) so I think I'll probably go for it once I've knocked them down a few quid.

I had a 1986 635CSi that had a manual sunshade for the rear window.
Maybe you can pull one off a parts car?

Read the first two lines of the thread you just quoted me on - the wiring pigtail is mentioned by part number...
The rest of the wiring should be there. It is part of the chassis harness - if you are looking for that, you have bigger problems. The pigtail connects to the left hand inner fender (next to the seat). The connector is white IIRC. the pigtail then goes forward to the console to the sunblind switch and the other end plugs into the module that is mounted on on the sunblind assembly itself.

Oh I see! Sorry, I misunderstood. For some reason I had it in my mind that the pigtail ran from the sunblind button along the centre console where it then picks up the wiring harness which already has a plug to fit into the blind. What you have said now makes perfect sense. Oh and yes, the plug is white.
Now i just need to find the plug for the sunblind switch and the pass side heated seat.
Thanks
Steve
See three posts up from yours- pretty much describes it, even 8 years later, it’s still the same.

give yourself more time to do this job, otherwise you will break tabs , i took out mine to fix and it took me longer and i didnt have to take out center console.
i had a hard time putting the hat shelf back in place for some reason it came out easier but didnt want to go back in. and its a little tight and and uncomfortable place to work.
i think you will need the hat shelf that has the opening for the sunshade.

You can actually get the rear shelf out without removing the C pillars if you bow it slightly in the center. I just took mine out last weekend and it worked.
What "thumbs up" really means
Thanks all; got it out .
Olin,
Tony and I (mostly Tony) put one in my car. We had to put the shade together as I bought it disassembled because there was a metal gear that replaces the plastic one that had to be installed. If you don’t have to do any tweaking of the linkages it’s easy to install. As mentioned earlier you will need a rear tray and the pigtail. You’ll also need the switch and possibly a switch panel with more holes.
Dont drive with it up at without the windows up. Ask me how I know.
