I REALLY hate to post this as I am sure it's outlined somewhere. I just can't find it.
I have a 99 323i sedan with the A5S 360R auto transmission.
I have read varying opinions on what fluid to use. Everything from DextronVI to the "$100 a quart stuff".
Can anyone help me out? I REALLY loathe the thought of paying a ton of money for a simple trans fluid change.
Thanks.
Guess no one's ever changed their tranny fluid in a 323i, huh?

I believe it should be the Texaco ETL 7045E.
Check out this chart:

E93...kick you square in the nutz!
Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for!
But again, no one is positive about what to use.....
I'm going with DexVI. Screw it.....

BTW, here are some charts for anyone to look at the next time a search is performed.

Basically, any 100% synthetic will work, just make sure it is LT1171....(can't remember exact numbers, but something like that) compatible (will state on back of bottle). Back when the tranny was built, very few refiners were producing the 100% synthetic auto trans oils, hence the need to go with the expensive and specific fluid. Now, they are prevalent and the OEM specified fluid is not necessary.
Yeah, thanks, David.
I am going to use the Mobil1. I checked on the back of the bottle and it is compatible with the 7045-E fluid.
It's about $8 a quart at AutoZone.

Just to provide more input, AllData says the following:
Transmission Fluid Texaco ETL 7045, BMW part number 83 22 0 002 121 (Exactly what Gixer stated)
Note: Always check for label on transmission oil pan to verify fluid type.
