Old thread, I know. But I bought the cable kit and assembled it. Great directions, lot of fun. But the software side... not so much. My laptop can run VMWare 6 but has no real serial. My desktop has serial, but VMWare 3 is the newest that will run (maybe 4, I forget).
So can anyone recommend a laptop that can run VMWare 6 or newer and has a physical serial port? If not, then a desktop of sufficient vintage will be fine. As I have a new desktop, whatever machine I get will be used for my E32 (750iL) only.

I can offer exactly 0% help on this... However, I do LOVE the sound of an older desktop set a top A garage work bench running wires to an E32 750il, that's a beautiful thing.., GL
I would check newegg.com for used desktops or is CDW.com still around? Idk I've gotten some good windows XP comps from out there for stuff LIKE this, not exactly for cars tho

You can run ifhsvr on the desktop with real serial + ADS interface and DIS on the laptop. DIS talks to ifhsvr over the network and the tutorials assume you will run them on the same physical machine, but that is not necessary.
Do you really need DIS though? I find INPA quicker/easier for many tasks.

Well I really dont know all the terms yet. DIS, INPA, etc. I just read a few times that for the E32, DIS was the best method and worked well. The networking idea is interesting if not cumbersome. If I get really bored I may try it.

I found the Toshiba A10,A11 series has a physical serial port. So I grabbed an A11 for $75. It should do the trick.

I've recently downloaded and install the full INPA/EDIABAS from https://mega.nz/file/WwUiFTrY#wFt8Zx...pu3j2ErYzbOqeo. I have a OBD1 which requires the use of a serial port. The software appears to have a selection during the installation that allows you to choose OBD or ADS. Once I completed the install and launched the application and tried E31->Engine->M60, I'm not about to read the engine information and getting the error "AppCheckJobStatus: Error #95 SYS-0005: OBJECT NOT FOUND API job error or no such result! Continue script processing?". However with this version I am able to read the transmission, chassis, and body information. I have the Dinan chip installed, should will this matter with my inability to read the ecu data? I fell like I'm close to being able to read the engine information but not there yet. Is there a parameter I forgot to set?
