60,000-70,000
50,000-60,000
40,000-50,000
20,000-40,000
Less than 20,000
Seeing the recent post here of the pictures of deceased M3's got me thinking.
I wonder how many of the original ~71,000 E36 M3's are left?
There is no scientific way of figuring this out as I dont believe we have the statistics of each country the lovely 36 was sold in but what do you think?
My guess is around 40,000 are left.

The insurance on my M3 is higher than on my M5. High rate of total loss for the M3 is the reason.
I bet there's still like 60k left.
I would be very shocked if it was under 45,000. The better poll would be to find out how many in your year and color are still alive(no way to tell really though).
Just got rear ended into another car and Allstate ok'd $7000 to fix. Body shop said it was 57% totaled in there loss software. They want 70% to total a car. Cant wait to get it back. Just look how many s52's are for sale. Check UK ebay and german ebay to see all the s50b32 engines are available. My guess in another 5 years it will be at e30 m3 numbers.
I dunno about coupes, but sedans are sure as hell getting more and more sparse, especially the clean examples. 2k left? Little over 8k produced, figure 2 - 3k left, 100 - 300 properly maintained, 50 - 100 with low miles.

The number could be really low with all of the riced out cars. That is, I consider those cars as good as gone.
I'd say a good 55-60,000 are left. Doesn't matter to me though really, since in Vancouver these things are rarer than E46 M3's (OP, we're special)
Better to find out how many are left, and how many of those, are worth owning...
Cars with salvage titles don't count, they are dead...
No matter where you go, there you are...
Hmmm... good question.
What someone could possibly do is find out two numbers:
X: for a given state how many e36 m3's are registered in that state. Might be public info available from the dmv?
Y: for that same state, how many e36 m3's were sold. maybe a bmw dealer would have access to that info?
whatever that ratio is (X:Y) could then be extrapolated over the entire production line. That is to say, if you know X and Y, then Z (the number that we want to know) could be found with the equation:
Z:71,000=X:Y
I am not volunteering for this task ("action item")... just pointing out that it might be feasible to do if someone really wanted to do the legwork.
There can be only one.

Eh, after 13 years (on average), I would be willing to bet there are half of the total amount (including all the riced out ones that don't count as Brent stated so nicely).
I know there are at least 5 in Alaska. So, I'm going to guess... 6! ha!

I don't have a third brake lamp in my rear parcel shelf. Just the factory wing lights in it. Have yet to see another like mine. Anyone ?
I bet at least half of them are still on the road in some form or another. I'm sure there are a few thousand nice low mileage cars out there in peoples garages. You just don't see them for sale that often.
I have noticed that a lot of the cars I see for sale that are in nice shape are either auto sedans or convertibles. It's interesting because these cars were produced in smaller numbers, but they make up a much larger percentage of cars for sale.
Seems like more of the 5-speed cars have had the crap driven out of them and or wrecked.
