    New M5 owner

Last night I bought a 2000 M5, dark blue, 58,000. Due to the snow storm last night, I wasn't able to drive it home. I'm eagerly waiting for the snow to melt. I've owned a 1997 M3 for the last 8.5 years. Can anyone give me any advice about owning the M5?

"...since it is an E39" ? please explain that. I think the E39 is probably one of the best built BMW 5s ever.

    Congrats!
That storm sucked. I just paid $100 to have my driveway plowed so I can get my K2500 Suburban out and get to work tomorrow, plus having to burn a vac day today.
I'm not saying you're stupid, I'm saying you have bad luck at thinking.

He said it will cover the issues since its an E39. Whats the problem? He didnt say E39s are bad. He said this is an E39 forum and we can help E39 problems. Goodness...

M5board is a much better place for M5 owners

PS the color is Carbon Blue. I have pre-painted Carbon Blue hamman foglight covers I bought in excellent shape if you are interested. I ended up getting a deal on an unpainted set and will be repainting those instead

I was just saying that it will have a lot of the same problems that all E39's have(not putting them down) and that this forum is a great resource for him. The M5board will have more specific info and such since it is an M5!

    This comes to mind:

There was about an inch of snow on the ground during my test drive so I didn't get above 25mph. I decided to drive my M3 home since I have snow tires on it. I left my chains at home thinking I would trade in the M3 but they only wanted to give me $3K for it, so I decided to keep it. Chains req'd from south denver to monument so I had to take hwy 83. It was a 4 hour drive back home.

congrats on your purchase- you will love it!

Keep EAC Tuning in mind when it comes time to do some maintenance and upgrades, we have some slick stuff for your M like a short shift kit, Bilstein coil overs etc.

    welcome OP!

for you new sign ups, maybe you should read the board and learn a little bit about the car you just bought before slinging mud, bagman has been around the block in an e39 a few times while you were pushing whatever it is you used to drive. If you think the e39 is some trouble free gift to the motoring community you are sadly mistaken.

The car will always get you down the road but you are gonna pay to play or you will not have a nice e39 long. Window regs, door handles inside and out, cooling systems, valve cover gaskets, oil filter housings, wheel bearings, blown struts, bad bushings, fried ABS modules that cost a fortune, should I go on?

Sounds a lot like the E36 M3. I take it I should replace the radiator with an aluminum one.

    E36 M3 and a E39 -- now that's the way to go! Welcome.

Come back sometimes and let us know how maintenance goes. The M5 has a bad rep, interested to hear first hand what crops up. Did the dealer have any maintenance records, you do a PPI? Any idea if any preventative work had been done? Cooling system and Insp. II are right around the corner at that mileage.

FWIW, the 530 has had more issues than my M3. Still only 47K on her, though.

BTW dark blue on a E39 M5 is Le Mans.
