Question FAQ-> What is a Sport? What is Highline? What is the Protection Package? Chromeline?

    Sport Package:
E38s were offered from the factory with a “Sport” package option. It was available both on short wheelbase versions (eg 740i) starting in 1999 MY and for the long wheelbase versions (eg 740iL) starting in 2001 MY.

Care must be taken when purchasing an E38 advertised as a sport model. Many people try to get away with slapping M-Parallels on and calling it a sport, when in fact anyone with a couple hundred dollars could do the same thing. If you want a sport model, it is recommended that you have a local BMW dealer look up the VIN to ensure that the car came as a sport from the factory otherwise you could be getting ripped off.

    740i (SWB) 99-01
    · Three-Spoke M-Sport Steering Wheel (late 2000)
    · M-Parallel Alloy Wheels (Style 37)
    · Shadowline trim
    · Shortened final drive ratio of 3.15 vs. 2.93
    · Steptronic transmission w/ higher stall torque converter (as of model year 1999)
    · Lowered and Tuned Sport suspension
    · Vavona redwood trim
    · Sport-Comfort seats

    740iL (LWB)
    · M-Parallel Alloy Wheels
    · Shadowline trim
    · EDC III Electronic Dampening Control suspension
    · Vavona redwood trim

    750iL (LWB)
    · M-Parallel Alloy Wheels
    · Shadowline trim
    · EDC III Electronic Dampening Control suspension w/ rear SLS
    · Steptronic transmission
    · Active Comfort Seats (or Sport Comfort option)
    · Vavona redwood trim (or optional Naussbuam w/ Inlay)

Note: Most LWB with the Cold Weather Package received 4 spoke heated steering wheel as NONE of the 3 spokes are. Interesting to note, that the SWB cars, even with CWP still only got the 3 spoke wheel.

    Highline Package:
The “Highline” package was offered as a luxury upgrade in 2000/01, featuring a Midnight Blue or Orinocco Green exterior with two-toned Ecru and body colored leather interiors, and contrasting colored seat piping. These are considered to be relatively rare, but they can be found. They were only available on LWB cars. These are not to be confused with cars that have a similar two-toned interior that have the darker “Oyster” beige and no seat piping.

    Protection Package:
The “Protection” package was offered on 750iLs featuring thickened body panels and bullet resistant glass. This is not to be confused with the “Dual Pane” energy saving/UV filtered glass offered. Like the sport package, many 750iL sellers try to claim that it has the protection package or that it has bulletproof glass. Care must be taken in order not to get fooled. Again, it is recommended that a dealer look up the VIN if there is any doubt. (Note: Available on very few 740iLs, very rare)

    · No Sunroof
    · Rear windows DO NOT roll down
    · No rear window switches on rear doors or drivers control.
    · Increased weight over std.
    · Extra thick Glass with black bands
    · Notch in front widow glass edge
    · “P” in the code following the type on the door sticker

    Additional notes:
Some try to pass off a sport model as an “M7.” The reality is that there is no such thing as an M7, in any generation of 7 series made to date. Sport packages are sometimes referred to as “M-sport,” but the M has no connection to the Motorsport division of BMW. If you ever see an “///M” badge on a 7 series, then you know that something isn’t right.
