Radio stuck on mute/phone

how do I get my radio/tape player to work, it displays mute/phone. it no longer has a phone in it.

do I need to get a phone to put back in for it to work. would like to get a phone, does anyone have or know where to get one.

My '92 E32 had the same MUTE problem, until I unplugged the phone control box in the trunk. It's mounted just to the left of the right trunk lid hinge.

Just unplug the 25-pin Data connector which is secured by 2 thumb screws.
