I talked with a couple local dealerships and they said that it wasn't possible. Of course these were the same folks that told me you can't put a 3-spoke steering wheel on either. I guess first, can you get a E46 key to fit a E36? Then, can you program it to perform the same functions as the fob that comes with a E36? Thanks in Advance. Andrew

Just buy the kit from united auto security. Plug and play, and it has an e46 key fob. The guy will even make the new keys for you and put your ews transponder in.

I highly doubt it would ever work, BMW's use whats called a "rolling code" transponder system, there's a chip in your key, and an antenna around your ignition that reads the value of the key and sends the data to your computer. Now my understanding of the rolling code is that the value changes each time it is read, and you can only have a certain amount of keys before your computer needs to be changed out (you have to get your keys from BMW since they have not released their technology to anyone, and they have to be matched to your computer).

Now beside all that i'm sure they use a completely different technology on the E46 than they do with the E36's.

can you pop out the round middle button and put the roundel from the original key (with the light) in its place?
