the diff housings are machined to match a precision bearing and a given gearset. the diff themselves are also machined to match that precision bearing. unless you are changing the ring and pinion, you wont have a backlash problem... ive been doing these diffs for years. this is not a lucky fluke.

the e39 diff is the same as e46 - very different from e36... no free lunch sorry

OK - so i'm a dummy when it comes to LSDs. Two questions:
1. Will this solve the annoying tendency of my 540iT to have the rear wheels (maybe its just one) spin like crazy when i pull out of a driveway, turning at a 90 degree angle, and giving it just a little go in order to get ahead of traffic?
2. What are these differences that keep getting referred to (but never actually mentioned) between an real LSD and a non-real LSD?
I will be doing this.
Hey where'd you source the Giken LSD?
we sell their diffs here, so i just ordered one

Oh full race - nice
So you know if one is available for an e34 525 rear end? or, an e34 m5 rear end? I think the E34 525 rear end might have the same LSD unit as an E36.
Confirmed E34 525 LSD assembly is same PN from BMW as E36 325.
Does Giken offer an E36 unit? Their site shows E36 options and E34 options. Are you able to PM me a quote for 9/91 build date E34 525 LSD replacement?

Awesome will shoot you an email or PM tonight
is your e34 turbo?
www.full-race.com
nice! what engine management are you using? I was going to swap a 2JZ in mine, but after driving a 318 swapped w/ e36 m3 turbo motor, im tempted to do the same. I was told i should convert my 98 to obd1 M3 wiring/ecu/intake manifold - got any recomendations?
www.full-race.com
its a 528i i want to convert. id prefer to work with the stock ECU, do you know anything about ICS? looking for something similar to hondata or what the evo guys do with the stock ecu
www.full-race.com
Yeah you're not going to have much luck. The E39 stock DME doesn't have much tuning available for it. You can OBD1 convert but much of the creature comfort relies on the ECU (a/c, dash readouts, etc) so you will be battling that.
We all patiently wait for something like the hondata/lsedit/chrome etc, but I don't think it'll ever come. There is a tuning option called the Warchip by Miller Performance but its not OBD2 ready.
is this the recommended setup, keep the DME and run a standalone?
www.full-race.com
maybe i missed it but is it the same part # for 525/528/530 and 540's? their website doesn't list a part for the 540, but i assume it is the BMW-M2?

unfortunately not - there is no application from OS Giken for the 540's. sorry for the bad news, you need to swap in the 528/530/E46 pumpkin or do a m5 rear diff/axles/hubs upgrade

2000 bmw 528i, m52tu...this the same application...???
So I guess this one is a best solution then? http://www.slickcar.com/productdetai...ProductID=8418 , carbon fiber plates etc. , good quality?
frgeoff, your car came with automatic or manual tranny?

jdjg - my car was an automatic originally. i wanted to get a manual trans, but i found such a good deal on this 528 auto and it had only 50k miles so I couldnt resist. Its the perfect daily driver/girlfriend + dog transporter. If i ever finish my other projects this car will get a manual trans, proEFI ecu, and a twinscroll BorgWarner EFR turbo. until then my R14 and my Evo 8 will have to suffice for going fast.
supra94tt - yes you are correct, the wavetrac is a good choice for a 540
