    Auto trans ID question

I'm looking at a high mileage 540it w/auto that does not have complete service records. (due to changing hands a couple of times).

    • Is there any way to reference the numbers on the trans and tell if it is original or has been replaced? (I understand that if it has been rebuilt, the case will be the same).

    • Any other way surefire way to tell if a trans has been rebuilt or replaced?

    • Anyone heard of an auto trans making 165K in an e39 540i? While I always owned manual shift Bimmers, I've generally heard most autos don't make it past 120K-140K???

    Thanks....

I wouldn't worry about it if it runs and shift fine (forward and reverse) and showing no indications of slipping or anything abnormal. May I ask how much the owner is asking for it?
