yea they'll work, I'd just look at the locking plate/washer and make sure you have or get the correct one if need be.
I'm not sure this is the case for all Z rack (Pelican parts shows the horseshoe shape for Z and E36), but mine had the other style IIRC. (Again, it's been many years now).

Yeah the yellow tag 712 ZHP rack is the E46 rack everyone gets (when they don't get a non-M Z3 rack). I'll be installing one next week. Some people also use the Z4 rack which is really short but requires some modification to fit in an E36. There's an old thread on that around here somewhere.

When you do the E46 rack do you remove the restrictor in the rack to pump line because the rack has a check valve in the banjo bolt? What does that check valve in the upper banjo bolt do?
I'll find out next week, but everything I'd read online from people who've installed ZHP racks says that it's just a bolt-on with no modifications needed other than using E36 outers.
