Assuming one could source that E46 wheel and airbag, is it a straight swap onto the e39, a 2000 540i in particular?

I agree with the sentiment that you should go with the steering wheel option that you prefer and like. Everyone who responds will say either of those two, and then people like me who'll say none of them and go for the later E39/E46 M Sport steering wheels at least as you have a 2000 build date car and would be a straightforward install. Then you'll get people like me... again... saying why not go for the carbon fibre and alcantara and perforated leather re-modelled E39/E46 M Sport steering wheels
I'd also like to redeem myself of any negative thoughts towards me for suggesting those by saying I have two of the E46 sport wheels sitting here doing nothing but gathering dust, sort the shipping out and you can have one of them !

I had both wheels but finally found the round air bag 2003 M5 wheel which i think with the M stitching and wide grip is the best overall.
