Its running "JVAB Sooper Bitchin Suspenders." Small operation out of the pacific northwest that does bilstein based rally suspensions. Good stuff for not alot of coin.

Off season now, so not alot going on. Will post up more when the car is back in action!

My home computer is fubar'd so a buddy of mine edited up some video of our race a couple weekends ago. Not my finest driving as I realized Saturday afternoon that my brakes were no longer capable of locking up the tires, so dialed it back a bit on braking zones for Sunday's runs. Still managed to stay out in front of the other 2wd rally guys by ~6 seconds.

On the brakes - turned out that the front master cylinder was starting to leak past the seals and onto the floor and my 'firm pedal' was actually the pedal bottoming out on the mount. Got a new master installed and bled last night so I've got no excuses this weekend. Hoping for a little moisture on the road so its not super dusty. Current 2wd record is held by a Neon SRT set a few years ago.

    Temple Canyon Hill Climb Recap

Need to thank my wife (and navvie) Allison for knocking out the post event recap. The formatting isn't carrying over to the forum post terribly well, so if you'd like to see the prettied up version, please feel free to check it out on our website: http://racekern.com/temple-canyon-2013/

We got some good seat time in with the Colorado Hillclimb Association at Pueblo Motorsports Park a few weeks ago, but this weekend was the first real hillclimb of the season. Temple Canyon, located just outside of Canon City, is a fun and challenging all dirt road. Since we’ve taken a number of years to get the BMW ready for dirt racing, we missed out on this race it was great to be back!

The BMW hanging out in the natural habitat of Canon City

Practice went pretty well as we got to know the road again. There were a few cautions for mud pits since we’ve been getting some rain. Those dried out quickly, but sadly that meant so did the tacky road surface as well. The last run of practice day got cancelled because of more rain and hail. Oh well, means beers and hanging out a little earlier plus, our time from our last run had qualified us 1st in Rally 2WD.

A little taste of the twisty & narrow road

Upon arriving for Race Day the next morning, folks started noticing they had been tagged with Caswell stickers. Not sure who the culprit is, but no Bill sightings at the race. After noticing ours on the trunk, I was just going to pull it off, but Dave and I made some “enhancements” to the sticker instead.

We put on some fresh tires on (for those of you that know Dave well … aren’t you proud of him?!) and were ready for Run 1. It was already hot and dry. First run went very well – surprisingly. We felt like we got a few corners better than practice, but a few others not as well. We expected a similar if not worse time from qualifying. Instead we went from a 3:42 to a 3:35. That was enough to break the standing 2WD drive record for Temple Canyon. That’s 2 for 2 on breaking records this season!

    The Race Day timing board

We had been hearing some pretty awful clanging sounds throughout practice. Our exhaust had some issues at Pueblo and we had taken it off. Hangars were reinforced before Temple Canyon and we chalked up the noises to ‘self clearancing’ due to the slightly less hangar sag. It started to sound really bad after our first Race Day run though and Dave got the car up on jack stands to have a look. Turns out our Supra differential was starting to crack its custom mounts! No bueno. Everything was still intact, meaning it was repairable with reinforcement. We didn’t take the risk of a second run given we felt lucky to have noticed it when it was in a relatively easy fixable state. If we took another run and it busted through, like it wanted to, the repair would become much nastier and more expensive. Furthermore, if it did bust mid run, that sort of loss of control of the car could result in a season-ending type crash. Temple Canyon is unforgiving, and there are only so many piles of kittens (picture at the end if you don’t know what I’m talking about). Feeling good about the first run, we saved our car and hoped we could hang on to first place. After our class took their second run without us, we were pleased to see that 3:35 hang on to win the race.

Devon (AfroThunder) Dobson captures a nice action shot!

Overall it was another great weekend racing, thanks for reading!

Damnit, just can't seem to catch a break lately with this car. Ran fine at the last event and seems to have munched its motor just sitting around while I was out running Pikes Peak in the other car.

The S50 appears to have jumped timing but haven't been able to do a full tear down. We put a camera in the plug holes tonight and found marks on #2 piston and a valve stuck to #6 and can only rotate the crank ~70 degrees. Last time a retainer failed so a new head and one piston was enough to get it going again, but with marks on multiple pistons and a valve that looks like it snapped off, I'm thinking rather than trying to rebuild I should just find another engine.

The car is OBD-I, but I figure it wouldn't be all that bad to look at OBD-II options but I do have class rules to consider. Group 2 allows for engine displacement up to 3.0L, and Group 5 allows up to 5.0L...or forced induction on an engine up to 3.0L. So, since I'd like to keep the option of adding a blower down the line, I'm primarily looking for the following:

    • 1995 M3 engine
    • 325 with VANOS
    • 328 engine

I suppose I could also consider a Euro 3.0 or 3.2 since I think in the 290-330 range would probably be enough for a car racing in a limited traction environment, but just like the S54 engines, I suspect they're well outside my budget and may not be as plug and play as I need given my timeline.

Please let me know if you have something or might have leads...next race is last weekend of the month and I'm hoping to have something figured out so I don't have to miss it. Land's End Hill Climb is a fantastic stretch of road:

    Thanks!

    Dave

Long time no update. Found what I hope was a good deal on an S54. Going to dig into it somewhat before it I get around to installing it, for now just planning on replacing the rod bearings and bolts based on the mileage (~100k). I'm still looking into options for getting the wiring to work, and also thinking about rewiring the car some, mainly to get fuses and the ECU inside the cabin for those water splashes.

Have been keeping busy with other stuff in the interim, took the Evo for a cruise in the rain at Pikes Peak...

...and even managed to make it out to MN for a rally a couple weekends ago. This 328 coupe was purchased a few months with the intention of making it available for weekend rentals at our local hillclimb series and one-on-one instruction. I bought it as an automatic (previous owner was a paraplegic and totally ripped in the car!), but after fighting to get the gearbox out of the car, I decided to change it over to a manual. With the Compact sitting broken, I figured it was a perfect excuse to get familiar with the coupe.

Looks like I'm a bit late on a reply, but these are JVAB build Bilstein "40mm" shocks valved for rallying duty.

    Hey Dave,

Awesome build! Love your BMW. I was wondering where you located the spoiler and if you could send me a link to the supplier. Also, what engine are you running and what hp is it producing?

    Cheers,
    Mark

    Hi Dave,

I just breezed through your thread and it's great! I'm building an E36 M3 for rallycross duty and it would be great to get your feedback. Here the build thread. I'm also working with JVAB to get some coilovers made! From what I've read about these cars, I was thinking about running something around 250/350 for spring rates. I saw you run 300/200, but things are quite different in the back of a compact than the sedans/coupes. I also saw you got the RallyRoad trans brace, but I haven't been able to get in contact with them, does anyone know if they're still in business?

So has this car seen any races in the last few years? We want updates!!

Not sure why I didn't see notification of comments, so apologies for the really really slow reply!

I have an S54 in the car controlled by a Specialists Components Typhoon ECU. Mods to the motor are relatively simple, a K&N intake, Euro catless headers, stock midpipes but with aero turbine resonaters, y-pipe in the rear section to a 3" section with high flow cat at the tip.

For rear rates, I'm not 100% sure what you want to run, but there was a recent discussion on one of the facebook groups where I think Dave Hintz M3 stage car was discussed. They run an aftermarket taller spring in the factory location, after having issues with coilovers snapping the ears off at the rear hub. Want to say they were 5.25" diameter springs, but can't remember length or rates.

We have been running the car at our local hillclimb events the past few years, but I've been slacking on race videos and updates.

Hi Dave! Well, my car is pretty much done now. I ended up with 12" front 250lb springs and 7" 350lb in the rear at the stock location. Here's my build thread. I think it's a pretty good combo so far, but it's only done two events so far. Post some more updates of this beast!

Has anyone in the area purchased an S54 swap to put into an E36? Curious what swaps might be going for. The ebay prices seem to be about $3-4k for a 100k motor & manual trans another $1500. Some are asking closer to $6k when wiring harness & ECU are included.

Reason for investigating is that stage rally rules changed this year to allow swaps from other manufacturers, and I'm having thoughts of going with a turbo 4 instead of the big 6 (so it flies flatter).

My engine is at about 110k now and would include a bunch of extras:

    - rod bearings & ARP bolts done before I installed it
    - Specialist Components Typhoon II standalone ECU
    - merged wiring harness
    - VAC ATI harmonic damper
    - VAC throttle cable conversion
    - VAC oil cooler lines AN adapter, lines & oil cooler
    - VAC water temperature tube with bung
    - k&n intake that clears shock tower
    - mishimoto Z-Line radiator & stock
    - euro catless headers (also have catted US headers)
    - US catless midpipes (also have catted euro midpipes)
    - 6 speed manual (don't have clutch, FW, or shifter)
    - RallyRoad steel passenger side motor mount
    - AKG urethane engine mounts

So anyway, not ready to put this up for sale (if/when I do, ill get lots of pics and post in the correct forum), but curious if anyone had thought on what might be reasonable to expect so I can figure out if I want to investigate the swap costs further.

    Thanks for any insights!

    Dave
