Valvoline Maxlife, Castrol GTX, etc. Whatever brand you like, pick the high mileage variant.

Use a full synthetic oil. I personally like Royal Purple or Redline for my car. Can use Castrol or Mobil 1 though.

As far as weight goes if you drive easy go with a 0w-30 or a 5w-30. Since you in cali 5w is probably fine.

If you drive it a little harder look for a 0,5,or10w-40. (The lower the first number the better, this is the start-up viscosity which means your parts get lubrication sooner on startup. )

At 140k miles, no point in switching to a high quality oil, especially when you don't know what the PO's used. I would just use a High Mileage type.

First off, in your BMW you should always go for the synthetic oil. It does cost a bit more, but it saves you money in the long run because the motor will last a lot longer, it will run smoother, and you may even get better gas mileage.

Personally, I am a big fan of Royal Purple oil. It worked wonders on my old 1996 328i, both in the motor and the rear differential. I like to use 5w30 in the winter, and 20w50 in the summer.

The 5w30 is thinner, and the 20w50 is thicker, for the higher heat protection/viscocity.

If you're planning on doing the oil change anytime soon, then I recommend you use 5w30. It's a good middle ground for viscosity and protection in the cold winter months. Just use your preferred brand, but be sure to use synthetic.

It's always a good idea to use OEM oil filters.

    Good luck.

Wal-Mart brand synthetic motor oil is probably the cheapest way to break into synthetics. I am in no way say it is the best synthetic motor oil out there, but all motor oils have to meet API standards. I am sure that some motor oils greatly surpass these standards while some just get by, but if you do your research you will find that SuperTech actually isn't too bad! Just my 2 cents...Good luck and welcome to the forums!

DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC!!!! In 1992 BMW did not design their cars to use synthetic. If you use synthetic, the additives will deteriorate your engine seals and will ruin your car. I use penzoil conventional on my 92’ 325i. It’s pretty cheap. Just make sure your get a lot of it ( the car takes about 7 quarts to fill).

Hello Brendan, welcome to the forum. FYI ALL OF US HERE USE SYNTHETIC New and old, and our engine seals are still awesome.

For the great state of michigan with your super cold winters use a 0w-40 or a 5w-40 FULL SYNTHETIC

In the US "full synthetic" oil only has to be ~16% synthetic, so mobile 1 and Pennzoil are both shit lol. In Europe if it says full synthetic then it has to be 100% synthetic. There are brands in the US that are full synthetic, I don't know the full list but its like Royal purple, Amsoil.....

SEVEN YEARS! And, wrong. Your first post, you're wrong and your replying to a post that has been closed for 7 years. Seven. Not a record, but for God's sake man, if you're gonna shake the ghosts, at least be right.

And, the car does not take "about 7 quarts. It takes 7 quarts.
