i just checked under the hood and i didnt see a throttle cable, so i called my local bmw dealership and spoke to one of the service advisors and he told me from 1999 and up E39 should have drive by wire system.

My 2000 has a cable going to the throttle body. I know, because I took it off when replacing my head. So, I think the service adviser is mistaken.

Yeah, I would like to know if my 99 528i has drive by wire or not. There is a cable attached to my throttle body, but I read somewhere here that it is for the cruise control.

So the question stands: are 99s drive by wire? I don't think that just because there is one throttle cable attached to it means it is NOT drive by wire. Because if that one cable was for the gas pedal, how would the cruise control work??

Up until the I6 BMWs imported to the USA got DSC...there will be a cable going to the throttle body. In otherwords...the 528i/iT models with ASC+T (instead of DSC) will have a cable running to the throttle body.

After DSC became standard across the board on all models imported here in the States( 6/99 build date-up)...there should be no more throttle cables.

The chart below shows when ASC+T & DSC was offered as standard equipment or optional:

I think the OP wants to know whether, when he moves the throttle pedal the movement results in a cable moving or a potentiometer moving.

The model years for the 528i (1999-2000) used the Siemens MS 42.0 DME System. The MS 42.0 DME system uses a throttle cable. End of story.

In my 1998 528i, the car has Throttle cable for rpm control, the DSC is upstream of the Throttle.

The DSC is basically a throttle too, but its default position is the opposite of the RPM Throttle:
    - RPM Throttle Default: always closed
    - DSC Throttle Default: always open. When the car needs DSC function, the Plate closes down to retard Air Intake Flow; basically decreasing rpm so the car does not spin out of control.

Not exactly. Throttle pedal movement on M52TU E39's built after 9/98 moves a cable which in turn moves a potentiometer on the throttlebody. Under normal conditions, a motor on the opposite side of throttlebody opens throttle. If EML system fails, cable will open throttle via an internal spring so you don't need a tow.

The throttle cable on my 98 528i is frayed and holding on by a thread. I think it could break apart at any moment. Does anybody know if I can DIY a throttle cable replacement?

I disagree. I took my throttle body off today, and when I tug the throttle cable the throttle rotates. Completely mechanical (the battery was disconnected BTW)

    Pshovest is correct.
The M52TU is a sort of hybrid belt and braces arrangement.
The Throttle position sensors are on the throttle body and moved by the cable. There are 4 of these potentiometers on the cable end of the butterfly shaft where the cable connects.
The throttle is motor driven but if this system fails the cable can open and close the throttle against tensioning springs which are part of the motor driven butterfly assembly.
The later M54 engines are true fly by wire as these have the throttle position sensor in a module at the pedal and no throttle cable.

Yeah, there is a big electrical connector on the throttle body, but I assumed that was for the OBC taking over for ASC applications in a 'situation'.

    Hello Graham,

The electrical connector controls all the motor driven throttle functions including ASC. My car doesn't have DSC but from what I can work out M52TU and M54 engines don't have a separate DSC throttle body as on the M52 single vanos engines.
Check here and go to page 51 for a description of the MDK - motor driven throttle on the M52TU engine.
