anybody know how much this swap would be installed professionally on an e38???
the cost of that motor is about 30k new so you're looking to spend at least 20-30k for a salvaged M5 to get a used motor. Then you will need to someone how integrate the DME and other stuff to get it to work. Honestly, unless the motor was free, I wouldn't even bother unless I had all the time and money in the world.
Just save your money and buy a used 06 M5 in a year or two. They will probably be in the low 40s, high 30s by then. Just know that its a very high maint car. There are LOTS of electronics and you know what that means. What you get with an M5 is the total package of power, handling, and luxury all in one. The adjustable ride dampening is awesome (it really does go from comfort to sport and it also has an in between setting that I like to use everyday). The SMG is faster than any professional driver can be. You can't outshift it. The dual power program lets you put put around in 400hp to save gas and then let it rip at 500hp. Its just like Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde.

It's a complete waste of money unless someone gives you the parts for free. You'll spend your money on fabrication and retrofitting iDrive. A forced induction S62 or S70 is probably the only worthwhile swap for an E38.
yeah, what Dylan said. BUT, if you insist, here is a donor car:
http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...st-inside.html
$26k. I'm sure you can negotiate it down. But honestly, you'll want more than just that motor. Its a total package IMO.
BTW, there are 3 32bit CPUs in the car that control the engine, tranny, and everything else. So there will be a lot of trickery to get that thing to run right. I think it could be done if you get the DME from a E60 M5 with the 6spd manual. Its already setup more like a normal car.

not a waste of money at all.
remember that we are not talking the same demographics of your avg e38 owner anymore.
if i had the money, i would rather have it over an e60 m5... the e60 m5 will devalue, and will be a waste of money too if considered in an e38 demographical way

Trust me, I know you wouldn't say that if you actually go and test drive one. One thing you should consider is that M cars hold their value much better than non Ms. Its just supply (rareity) and demand (trust me, everyone would love to have one if they could). I've been the poor college student, a budding professional, and now I've arrived. It was only a matter of time before I got what I always wanted. Took 1.5 yrs to find this exact car with the exact color combo and every option I wanted.

I guess he has the speed govenor off? he redline the mess out that car.
Can't wait till Ed gets here next week.
Windows up with remote and take off the speed govenor. An anything else i can/we think of.
Oct 10 here we come.
I'd do it, simply because I like custom hot rods that were not what the factory built, And I like the looks of the E38 in and out much better than the E60. Yeah, it'd cost more than just a typical supercharged E38, but us hot rodders and customizers have often spent more on building a unique car than a standard car woudl cost (and often spend way more on upgrades than the purchase price of whatever car we started with).
Edwin can do the following
`````````````````````````
change navigation voice to Uk woman`````s voice
remove "Accept Screen" on nav start-up
reset engine values
reset transmission adapatation values
remove speed govenor
Make bright lights come on with fogs and low beams- All on effect
click once to Unlock all doors instead of clicking twice to unlock all- Love this mod
lock doors after 5 mph or turn off
turn off or turn on DRL`s
activate follow me home lighting- great for walking to ur house at night
window up /window down via remote
and check for error codes and he can clear them as well
ya your probably right, i love modern cars. i love technology.
my right brain would be so happy, but my left brain would be disappointed everytime i walked away from it.
I would rather have a CLS63 than an M5 style wise, hands down. but the cls63 doesnt have a manual...
not everyone would work to buy an expensive car. there are a wide variety of personalities, and cars (especially on the east coast) are often seen as appliances similar to washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers.
it's not uncommon to see a collora, civic, or prius in the driveway of a multimillion dollar boston suburban home.
That is the single most annoying feature I have ever had in a car. It makes me worry constantly that I left my lights on. It once got me in trouble when I was at a funeral. Ever since I bought my Jeep 12 years ago I now always make sure the lights are turned off before I turn off the engine so that the lights will be off before I exit the vehicle.activate follow me home lighting- great for walking to ur house at night
BTW would is not be less expensive to just super charge an e38. I know it is not quite as much power but it is so much more reasonable.
yeah, but I live in CaliCali! LOL, car culture dominates here like no other. Its just insane. Now, I'm not living in a multimillion dollar home but I'm not going to drive a prius either! Gotta have the power.
Honestly, I hope everyone buys fuel saving cars b/c I need whatever is left for my M5! It burns gas like no other. I honestly think this car does more damage to the environment each time I redline it than any SUV can. The 4.8is, 740i and MCoupe get way better gas mileage than the M5. I can only manage 13mpg mixed driving. But you couldn't wipe the smile off my face if you tried...hahahah
I think what you will find if you get into an M5 is choices. If you like technology and want technology that is fully customizable to YOU, then you will digg this car. Everything is customizable. EVERYTHING. Jeremy Clarkson wasn't joking when he said there are like a few thousand combinations of settings you can set in the car. Don't let the big number overwhelm you. Its easy for us younger guys to figure out. Took about a day before I figured everything out. I was so enamored with the 500hp and 8k redline that I didn't bother to figure all that stuff out so quickly. I think it would really take an hour for most of us to get acquainted.
