Who knew a little trip to the Apple Store to get some more memory for my iMac would turn into a triple digit sprint home
I pull onto 821 Northbound at the SW 152nd Street exit, and notice a Boxster just about to merge onto the freeway. I'll pull up next to him, and we're both waiting for traffic to clear while rolling about 55mph in 3rd, ASC is off.
He creeps about 1 car length ahead of me (i'm stuck behind some slow POS) and then jumps on the gas. I immediately change into his lane go WOT in pursuit, now about 2 car lengths back. Finish 3rd at 6500rpm, quickly into 4th and the gap between us stays constant. Shift to 5th at 6500rpm and still not pulling on him until he obviously lifts and I have to quickly change to the leftmost lane, blowing by him.
He changes to the right most lane for some reason and gets caught in some traffic and finally works his way back to my tail after about a minute. I downshift into 4th and wind it out and he's still on me, until I wave and exit to continue on my way home.
I must have the slowest M3 in the world, as I thought I was going to eat this guy for lunch. Instead, we were dead even after I went WOT from 60 - 110mph, although he did get the first jump, so I was basically playing catchup the whole time.

representing Cabrios
and why did you wanted to eat his lunch
R.I.P. Louie: TehPandaShow gone but not forgotten
Probably that was a boxster S, u shouldn't have problem with the base model.
yeah, i pulled a dubya and "mistyped". edited now to read "eat him for lunch" . . . god, i hope it was a Boxster S because I wasn't closing the gap until he lifted. oh, and i had the top down (of course ) while his top was up

With a normal, unmodded Boxster, they have like 227 hp.. Not exactly a threat...
Either it was modded or was an S, or your top down really screwed your aerodynamics... but at that speed?... nah... did he have a single or double exhaust outlet? Double = S.

How will a chipped E36 325i do against a stock Boxster?
Could be a supercharged boxter
It was likely an S and let's face it, you have a vert with added weight. I still think you did damn good against what is supposed to be a dedicated sports car (2 seater, mid-engine, and let's not forget who makes it, Porsche...) I say, "Job well done"...
it had to be an S model cause i beat up on the base models all day long so your m3 would eat the base model for lunch...

The vert m3s a significantly heavier, the S would have beat you instead of being even. I got killed by an S in my M3 coupe and I had a very good launch and perfect shifts.
let me ask a question notconvicted -
were both of your windows down?
was your sunroof open?
was your a/c on?
These will have a significant drag affect at higher speeds ...

Why did you turn off the traction control? Do you have wheelspin in 3rd gear on the highway?
Stu
Jochmael; vhere is zee wasserpumpen!?"
Traction control is too intrusive during a race, a little chirp here and there will not limit you as much as DSC on a hard shift...
ASC limits throttle action, as well as applies brakes to stop wheel spin, no? I wasn't worried about wheel spin, just wanted maximum throttle response.Originally posted by E30 Stu

the boxster was top up, windows up, probalby had A/C running since it's almost always 80+ degrees in miami.
i don't think it was an S, because I don't recall the double tailpipe or red calipers. also, i suspect he had an auto tranny b/c there was no evidence of him shifting, just constant acceleration up to about 110 or so
my car is just heavy, i fear

man -- I need read things more carefully ... ...
ASC isn't going to really affect you at those speeds. ASC is only going to interact if the back tires start to spin too much acceleration is slower gears and or over powering out of a corner.
I think you did really good against him considering your top was down and his was up. Remember, AC doesn't play much of a role when racing... at WOT, the computer disconnects the AC for maximum power...
Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by hundreds of engineers that get paid thousands of dollars for something you bought at Pep Boys because your buddy who doesn't have a job told you it was 'better'?!?
Good job, you have a vert and did what was expected
I will disagree:Originally posted by Kevlar

A/C is a constant 8-10% loss on power whenever it's on.
Now, do you mean that whenever u go WOT there's NO cool air?? Strange, that doesn't make much sense.
It's true...Originally posted by kotsos1870

When the AC is on at idle and partial load, the AC clutch is engaged to spin the AC compressor. When the accelerator goes full throttle... The AC clutch is disengaged for maximum power. I'm 95% sure it happened on my E36 M3 and I'm looking at documentation right now that says it happens on E46 M3 cars.

hmmm impressive, but what happens if u want to race in 100 degree weather? You sweat in your Armani and onto your leather seats??
then when u arrive at ur gf's, she says: 'Honey, no a/c?' and u: 'sure thing honey, I was just racing...'
The ECU makes the best decision for the car... remember, it only disengages the AC clutch at WOT. You'd have to be at WOT for a very long time for you to notice an extended difference in air temps. Remember, when the AC clutch is disengaged, the AC still has cool air left in it... let alone sweat through an armani suit. I think you'd have to be flat out across the Nevada desert for that... eventually you'd have to lift for a corner.Originally posted by kotsos1870
